Yeah, DoW 3 was bad. Literally the only good part about the game are the ork characters talking.

Saber Interactive did the WWZ game and the zombie horde mechanics in the were flat out scary. They've also done work on the Halo remasters and if the cutscenes are anything like H2:A then this looks to be a very good game from the get go.

It's kind of ironic how much the original game is loved today. Back when it was released it got low ratings across the board and was considered a rip-off due to its high price and short campaign.
I seem to recall reviews saying anywhere from "it's okay" to "it's pretty good", maybe I'm remembering wrong, but I don't recall particularly low rating.
Personally I really liked it right from the beginning. Many games have short campaigns and if folk care about the money / hours ratio they'll usually wait for a sale, personally I preordered it for a small discount after really enjoying the demo. I liked the sense of mass without being sluggish, felt proper for a Space Marine.

It's cool to see and all, but it would have been nice to focus on a different Chapter.
The game's called "Space Marine" after all. If that's not an open invitation for showcasing different Chapters then I do not know what is!

These days, I don't mind a short campaign.
Heck, sometimes I even seek games out because I know that they're shorter.
I did have a lot of fun with the first one, so I'm going to be cautiously optimistic.

It was in different times. At that time people expected to get 40 hours of play out of a game, and Space Marine charged tripple A prices for just about 10 hours even if you did all the collectibles. You also couldn't just assume that it would eventually be on sale like you can now.

Quite excited for the game itself - but also to put on the well worn tinfoil hat we see a new design of primaris jump pack in the trailer (for about 1/10th of a second), hopefully this is a real thing at some point and not just the animators artistic licence.

I think you think this came out a lot longer ago than it did, lol. There was still plenty of short games back in 2011, I remember a bunch games that were sub 12 hours going back to the days of the original Xbox, and Steam sales were still a well known thing back then, it was pretty well established by 2011 that if you wait a few months to a year from release the game would be out much cheaper. I remember having discussions back when it came out with people about whether to preorder to get the skin packs or just wait for a price drop.
But anyway, whatever, I just don't remember there being a lot of low ratings like you said in your original post.

Yeah it looks new to me, Shrike has 4 spherical nozzles + 4 of the grav chute "wings", Suppressors are pretty much the same but with only 2 wings. This one seems like a sleeker version of the classic Assault Marine pack, but with a pair of the new spherical nozzles + wings added between the main nozzles.

As a final treat, let’s zoom in on a particular part of the trailer – Titus hasn’t lost his devastating assault jump, and time hasn’t slowed his fury. As he smashes aside a hormagaunt brood with extreme prejudice, you might notice that the jump pack pattern he’s using is a little unfamiliar. In fact, you won’t have seen it anywhere before, because it’s a brand-new pattern designed by the Warhammer Design Studio for the Mk X Tacticus armour used in Space Marine 2.
Apparently they're getting a whole day's worth of articles out of this trailer.

The Black Library characters have been a pretty huge hit for both games, so this seems inevitable (Gardus, Varian + Aleya, Raine, Ventris, Eisenhorn, Gaunt's Ghosts, Ephrael Stern).

Probably not Kill Team or 2022. Though I do think we're getting closer to Guard releases after seeing the Cadians show up again in that new design.

For those who played it on PC, how was the mod support? I know it had color/pattern swaps pretty early on (within days of the demo iirc) but I was/will be a console peasant so am unclear on the prior modability.

I was super sad until I realized this is the actor that played Rollo in Vikings! I think he'll be great as a SM voice actor.
Honestly, I never played the original game, I just watched (and rewatched) a stitched together cut of all the cut scenes (and relevant gameplay parts) on Youtube so it become more of a movie. Based on the trailer, if GW did that, it would be better than pretty much anything else already on WH+. Do video game companies need to get into the animation business, or is that all outsourced to the same people anyway?

Because they got a different voice actor? Things happen, and it isn't always the studios fault. Conflicting schedules for one, maybe Strong wanted more pay or more lines.
It's not like they went with a nobody, or Bob down in accounting. (Which has happened in some games, and it's usually time to go full subtitles).
I'm a bit more worried about the weapon sounds being kind of blah.

Jidmah is just wrong. Good example of the faultiness of human memory and/or confirmation bias.
Most of the reviews landed in "it's decent" territory.
And, like you say, games with 10-12 hour singleplayer campaigns were very common in the 2000s. Not unusual at all.
I mean, it's not like all those reviews aren't still easily available.
IGN wrote:https://www.ign.com/articles/2011/09/09/warhammer-40k-space-marine-review
Space Marine may stumble here and there, but manages to remain entertaining from start to finish. For every moment where a character gets stuck on part of the environment, has an animation that breaks, or just randomly pops into the world, I’m left remembering great boss battles and encounters that made me feel like a badass. It may not be the best or most original action game, but it’s a fine first outing for the franchise, and a rare gem for Warhammer fans.
Rock Paper Shotgun wrote:https://www.rockpapershotgun.com/space-marine-review
Despite growing tired of its relentless sameness, I also kind of miss it now I'm not playing it anymore - it's immensely satisfying to hammer and Lascannon your way through a small army then proudly pan an absurdly blood-splattered Titus around the now-empty room it all happened in. Those four years built a solid foundation for sure; a shame Space Marine doesn't go much further than that.
EuroGamer wrote:https://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2011-09-06-warhammer-40-000-space-marine-review
Spend a few minutes with the multiplayer customisation suite - unlocked when you hit level 4 online - and you will probably find yourself rapt... It all fits snugly together, allowing fans to recreate their perfect vision of a Space Marine for Relic's first third-person shooter in the 40k universe. For everyone else, it uses the tabletop game series' vast history as the basis for an interesting and intelligently assembled collection of loadouts, perks and classes.
Throughout the single-player campaign, too, you can feel the depth and proud history of the nearly 25-year-old 40k universe rumbling in the background.
GameSpot wrote:https://www.gamespot.com/reviews/warhammer-40000-space-marine-review/1900-6333276/
Space Marine is simple fun, and a treat for fans of the franchise--and for anyone who delights in the ceaseless bloodletting of bad guys. It is, in fact, a little too simple. As entertaining as it is, the game lacks the variety, the memorable moments, and the sense of scale of the finest shooters. After you annihilate yet another great mess of greenskins, the question arises: Is this all there is to it? With some exceptions, yes, that's all there is to it, and it's hard not to wonder what might have, should have been. But the action is so satisfying, and the atmosphere so grim, that you'll want to see the adventure through.
