Yep. I liked it best in the early years when it was a cool monster hunter show. When the revelations demon possession stuff took over, it was meh. I did find the episodes about the monsters who used the food supply to generate food for themselves ( iirc) fun and an intriguing parody with contemporary big pharma big tech sick care and processed foods especially high fructose corn syrup etc…

Maniac on Netflix was good. It's a short one season show that's weird and stylistic.

Travelers. It’s time travel done well. Very well. They also wrapped up things up in three seasons while ideas were still good and performances were still fresh. It understands the concept of leave them wanting more.

Lost in Space, on Nexflix. The show will give you anxiety, but it is meticulously plotted and the effects are out of this world. Good story with a good conclusion, plus fun characters. Valkyrie wrote:I've just started getting into Man in the High Castle. Only a couple of episodes in but I've heard good reviews, and as it finished a couple of years ago it might be worth a go.
It kinda fizzles out by the end, IMO. It does a good job of showing you the very different kinds of oppression the WWII era Germans and Japanese undertook.

Good call... Dr Smith annoyed me intensely, but the rest of the cast is excellent, and the series overall is fantastic.

Howabout Himitsu? Japanese tv series from 2010 based on book by Keigo Higashino. While not as good as the book itself enjoyed it though the ending pissed me off a bit conditionally(either Japan has weird tradition or director IMO missed point of what character was trying to accomplish. Said conditionally because it IS possible there is tradition in Japan I'm not aware of and it was actually 100% appropriate )

Surprised no one hasn't mentioned Breaking Bad. Arguably the best TV show ever made.
Other than that I'd recommend the following:
House of Cards (both original and Netflix remake).
Ozarks (last few episodes are about to be released on Netflix).
The Wire.
Battlestar Galactica (the 00's remake).
Lost.
6 Feet Under.
Edit.
Will add my votes to people suggesting Chenobyl and The Terror (first season is absolutely fantastic).

Last Kingdom is great. The many Sharpe TV-movies are also great. Same author which was a surprise to learn.

Some finished shows some people haven't mentioned:
BoJack Horseman, one of the few shows that mixes comedy with tragedy and drama that few shows can do well without undermining either side.
Gravity Falls. A fantastic show that is tightly written and doesn't drag on too long. Really set the new standard for what kids shows are able to do story and content wise.
Mike Tyson Mysteries. A truly non-sequitur but hilariously written comedy with fantastic performances from Norm MacDonald (RIP) and Mike Tyson himself.
Anime wise:
FMA Brotherhood is one of the greats, hard to top it.
Vivy Florite's Eye is a solid one and done anime that doesn't overstay its welcome.
Overlord is a good take on the isekai genre, though I would also put Konosuba up there with it.

Maybe because all those shows sound like a bad time? Might as well watch the news if I want to be horrified by humanity.

Das Boot (season 1 - 2 isn't bad but not necessary)
The Terror (season 1 - haven't seen 2, but 1 wraps itself up nicely)
Westworld (season 1 - because season 2 was so unnecessary)
Generation Kill
Band of Brothers (when you watch it now, it's a who's who of upcoming stars of the era)
Tennant's Dr Who (there have been up and downs since, but that last "I don't want to go" feels like the perfect end)

Unfortunately the shows degrades pretty hard, probably just since season 3. First season is based on a masterpiece and it's great indeed.
Agreed that Man in the High Castle falls from grace as it goes along. The ending especially made me almost feel like the show as a whole wasn't worth watching. It does start off very strong though.
Ah bugger, really? That's a shame.

OK, bit of an odd response. If Lost and Battlestar Galactica are too bleak for you, I'd be interested to see what you suggest.

Still of the view the show lifted a fair bit of inspiration from the Catch 22 book as well as its own source novel, maybe if 22 would have been the cheaper option we would have seen Mr Alda as Yossarian in the way back
