Just the books for me at the moment. Glaive is definitely joining the armour pool, but with a big holiday coming up end of April, need to properly prioritise.

Expensive, but expected. That's a chunky tank.

It's also Custodes so an elite army so its one box but that will be a huge tonne of points to field so it will add up to a full army very quickly.

IIRC box is about 1100 pts. If you're playing the recommended 3k points of Heresy its still a pretty expensive investment.

*Sigh* I have never been interested in Custodes, but these new models look really nice (especially the vehicle). I can feel the pull towards acquiring some.

Assuming the infantry are around £50 per box, the dreadnought another £50 and the tank at least that much too it's a 20% saving even before the shield captain, so if anyone's at all serious about doing the army it'd be worth trying to nab. I swear the individual unit box pricing has gone up specifically to make the big box sets look better.

These boxes tend to be discounted at least 30% yea, if you want banana boys get the big box for sure.

Out of interest what are people finding is a nice points value for the game? We are up to 1500pts as part of an escalation league and already finding a 6x4 is crammed and struggling to fit a game into an evening's play.
I understand the creators of the game probably set an amount and then GW sales poked a head in through the door and said 'double it' so am always suspicious of the amount GW set for their 'standard game'*

*I know things like Primarchs, reserves, very expensive super heavies can help with miniature volumes and stop it looking like just one massive scrum with zero opportunity for manoeuvre.

I know locally, for both 1st and 2nd edition people tended to sit at the 2.5k-3k mark. Or 1250 for ZM games.

I was quite partial to 2250pts games in 2.0. It gave you enough points to take "Stuff" but not enough points to take "all the Stuff". You had to start getting a bit selective.

Not sure what people are doing for 3rd edition as the scene has kinda died off and I haven't been playing. Can't imagine it's shifted too much though.

3k is the standard as far as I know, barring the idiosyncrasies of local metas.

That's really interesting to know, thanks..

Was struggling to think of a descriptor of the ruleset for a while and have now settled on 'constipated'. Everything else is about the game, so I guess the board being bunged up with hundreds of marines fits that bill.

Nobody actually brings hundreds of Marines. Your points are going to vanish very very quickly when you get going.

Yeah, 3000 pts are standard, but like... usually only 1000 points of that is actually line infantry type units, the remaining is usually split between characters, superheavies, and expensive elite units. If you're finding a 6x4 crowded you and your opponent might be focusing too much on small dudes. Typical 3k HH game will usually have a model count about the same as a 2k point 40k game, unless one of the players is playing an infantry heavy skew list.

Battles with 2k or even 1,5k are fine in a like-minded environment - either for starting the game, trying something new or weird, testing allies, fielding stuff you have but ignore it in larger games (several Legacies and Militia for example), playing special missions or just having a smaller, faster game. It works quite well and is fun if you and your opponents want it to.

I do really like the new Custodes, the poses and proportions are much improved. The tank still irks me somehow it just doesn't belong with the Imperial design.

Better than a Land raider spray painted gold, but I just don't like it.

Doubt I'll get the box, too much to paint already, but it is good.

That, and this isn't 40k. Upgrades cost points. 10 Tactical Marines may be 100 points, but give them bayonets, a vexilla, a nuncio-vox, an augury scanner, a plasma pistol and a power sword for the sergeant, and suddenly the unit costs over 50% more.

We're still in 2.0, and my Terminators are over 40 points per model with their weapons, my Leviathan is 300, etc. From what I see 3.0 has kept prices generally similar, aside from making some vehicles such as the Rhino more expensive to match its boosted durability.

The reason I think 3k is standard is because it prevents all eggs from being in one basket. That 300 point Leviathan is overly swingy in a 1k game where it represents a third of your army. In a 3k game it's just a tenth of your army.

Thanks guys for the replies - I think as we get to bigger points values we will probably introduce more 'toys' that will eat some of the points and as has been said above add more wargear. Although we have stopped using mixed weapon units to try and speed things up, as we had a few combats take almost 30 minutes to play inc. a challenge, which is nuts for a mass combat game.
Also found New Recruit app a must, as it really helps speed up looking up special rules and stat lines.

I preferred 2nd edition, and have been playing since the black books from Forge World came out. I still don't like the new detachment rules, but the game itself is good. I'm getting ready for AdeptiCon next week. My buddy and I will spend all 3 days playing Horus Heresy. I've had 4 or 5 games played since the new edition came out last year, but no one local to me plays. I like it better than 40k, but I play both.

Troops are important, especially with Line. Most of the events we play are 1500 point doubles games, so 3000 points per side. Solo, 2500-3000 is the most common I believe. People want to take a Primarch and/or a super heavy. Taking both will set you back 1000+ points. Terminators and other elite units kitted out with tacti-cool gear and 10-man heavy support squads will run you 300 points each, so your list fills quickly.
