Yes, they only have claws right now (S 7, AP 3, D 2, Breaching 5+) Hopefully this isn't some silly bloat with meaningless differences. Or a downgrade where each of the four one only inherits one good stat from the current claws. Seems you're forced to make a mixed unit, too, there's not enough of anything for the whole unit. And as an additional annoyance, there are 6 clearly distinct weapon sculpts in the photo... for four weapon profiles... so good luck remembering what's what.

I am assuming the weapon types are just cosmetic. There'd not be much point in making them have different stats since you don't really get a meaningful number of spares. Also, the article says "This gives infantry-based armies tools to tackle a wide variety of enemy units, from hordes of lesser chaff to heavy tanks – at a very competitive cost in points." That feels a bit of an unusual thing to see in a preview for the more narrative/hobby-oriented 30k. Especially if editions are just set to last 3 years now, I am not going to buy one of these very expensive miniature kits, miniatures that last effectively forever if cared for, for the points cost they happen to have -right now-. That would be like buying a new car just because the car on sale happens to be clean.

Sounds more like 'you don't need a tank'. Auxilia don't have any heavy weapons in their squads and a tank isn't the best/points-effective choice to baby-sit them.

I have managed to steer clear of the SA up until now - my only non-Legion army was going to be Mechanicum. But I've always liked the Charonite Ogryn models, and the 'old school' Rapier is (IMO) much cooler than the Legion version. With those models plus their Sentinel variants and proper retro tanks, it's getting harder to resist...

No reason why those Rapiers etc couldnt also be used for Astartes legion of your choice. Just cuz GW retconned them to be SA dont mean you cant just use the ones you like the look of more. This is what I'll personally be doing when SA get their Tarantulas
EDIT: Oh snap. Looking at my 90s references, its painfully clear to me now that the SA Rapier looks much more "authentic" to the original rapiers depicted in 1st edition Space Marine rulebooks etc. No idea what to do with the redundant SA crew, but those Rapiers are getting adopted for my IXth. I'm not entirely bitter about buying the Astartes Rapier kit, as it did come with those awesome gunner crew & bitz, just dont know what to do with those actual Rapiers now.. Maybe I'll make them into the other weapon variant now, and use these SA ones for the scatter laser like Omnissiah intended..
Ah, but looking these two kits even longer makes me feel like I want to kitbash them both together! Take the scatter laser from the Astartes Rapier kit, and transplant it into the SA Rapier chassis. The combination of both would look even more oldschool than either on its own

Hopefully the "six charonite claws" hints the minimun unit size will remain at 3 models.
Four different weapon profiles sounds a bit over the top so it could also be that for example "Charonite claws and Charonite blades" are one weapon profile and "Charonite crushers and Charonite shredders" a second profile.

Normally I would say "don't bet on it" (I have lost a number of 40k units to GW raising the legal minimum above the number of models I have) but the 30k writer seems to be merciful since Cataphractii min size stayed at 5.
Maybe that will change next edition, but for now, they just might be alright.

The first edition black books are the best campaign books GW has ever made with quite some margin, and stand head and shoulders over practically everything else in Warhammer with the quality and format of their background writing. In comparison, the libers from 2.0 on are very superficial. Essentially, this series is GW recognising that Mr. Bligh and his team (RIP) gave them an unprecedented jewel that new 30k players may not have been exposed to, and since they don't seem interested in doing reprints or continuing the series themselves, they see little reason in not using it as marketing material. Mind you, these slices they show are just fragments. It all really came together when each book was taken as a whole, units expressed with their rules, fluff bits on their dedicated page, etc. But it's still good.

You are absolutely right. My bad. In fact, reading through my 1st edition rulebooks tells me the Rapier is actually a faster vehicle than the Land Raider! (Max speed of 24"). Guess I'm keeping the seat then..

Augmented Abhumans This multipart plastic kit builds 4 Charonite Ogryns, ruthless line-breaking infantry for your Solar Auxilia armies in games of Warhammer: The Horus Heresy. Their hands and forearms have been replaced by a brutal collection of weapons that amplify their already fearsome strength, so they can rip through armour plating and flesh with ease. They are ideal for the ferocious close confines of boarding actions or the deadly press of melee, where they easily devastate foes. Armed for War The torsos are interchangeable across the legs in the kit, allowing you to customise your brutes, and 2 of the torsos each have a choice of 2 heads – masked or unmasked – with a choice of 2 faces. You can choose from some suitably terrifying weapons – power armour-breaching claws, horde-slaying blades, tank-busting crushers, or the appropriately named shredders. The kit includes interchangeable weapons: – 6 Charonite claws (of 3 designs) – 2 Charonite blades – 2 Charonite crushers – 2 Charonite shredders Each of these brutal implements can be grafted onto the left or right arm of your Ogryns. One of the claw designs can be assembled open or closed, and the crushers each have a choice of crushing device. Rules for this unit can be found in the Warhammer: The Horus Heresy Journal Tactica: The Battle for Tallarn – Part One supplement, available separately. Automatically Appended Next Post: So it looks like you can build them all with helmets, but not give them all the same weapon.

"Man reads book on camera" reveals there are indeed 4 weapon profiles. The default claws, thankfully, remain their same excellent selves. Blades are a tad weaker but get Reaping 2, and it's not like you're ever not going to be outnumbered, so probably worth it unless you're punching Terminators. Crushers have brutal vehicle penetration, but still fairly low damage for anti tank work, and go from 4 attacks to 2, so meh. Shredders are just gak on a stick. Since every model can have two and you pick one to use every round, it's probably worth upgrading one arm to blades or crushers, but you would really, really want all models to have the same loadout, which the box doesn't allow.

The Phazer wrote:I'm sure some SOS are coming at some point, probably the next eighteen months. We've literally just had another wave of Solar Auxillia.
Given how few units they have you could comfortably give them there own small book supplement at the time.
I’d argue they are beyond 18 miles out. The SM/ SA need a termite transport, the Mechanicus need the Domitar, Vorax, Secutar, Scylax, and Magos need plastic kits. Then the Custodes need the ones with the heavy bolters and the heavy dreadnought. The SA also need HQ items. Space Marines still have fast attack options that need to be updated into plastic - Recon Marines, Seekers, the two speeders, the Sabre tank, bike options, etc. The goal should be to be able to build main faction armies before doing a specialized mini faction. I’d love to see the Sisters flushed out but I just don’t see it being a priority just yet when they can still do so much with the Legion fast attack/ recon. I’d love to see an updated moritat or vigilator model as well.
There are also rumors that the Marine Legions will get upgrade kits. I’ve heard that they will be enough to make the legion’s power armor unit and a handful of legion consul upgrades. Something like 10 shoulder pads, 10 heads, 10 weapons, optional head for a consul, weapon options for the prime consul, and a couple of Sgt upgrades. Supposedly similar to the Black Templar 40k upgrade vs the small sprue upgrade packs. So WE would get chain axes and gladiator weapons, DA would get big swords, EC/ BA get fancy spears and swords, the NL would get a palm tree trimmer , fancy chain sword, and a sweet looking power fist. Some of them may get cool shields, guns, etc. but the focus would be to build a special unit. Again, that rumor was slated after all of the Space Marines had their core units. I’d wager it would be after Tartarus terminators get a glow up.

"palm tree trimmer"
I had heard vague mention of legion-specific upgrade kits, but nothing this specific. I think this is what Heresy needs, and probably in priority to filling out all the remaining units in plastic (although where on earth is my Sicaran Punisher??).
I could easily see GW splashing out on a few SoS units in plastic before finishing any other ranges. It's what they like to do.
