Meh.
Blind boxes are a horrible concept for this kind of game, but rendering it valueless by re-issuing the same models is just sticking the knife in.
Sculpts aren't exactly exceptional, either.

This could be a way for GW to address their SKU issue. GW simply has too many product lines for any store, even an online one to carry and keep in stock.
By going to blind boxes (maybe in S/M/L sizes) they'd streamline it tremendously. Fans would come in buy a box, maybe get 10 goblins, or 5 aspect warriors or a rhino, who knows.
That way everyone is happy.

Always nice to see 'newscale' Firstborn knocking about but I'll probably skip this as I spent a frankly inadvisable amount of money getting hold of several of each of the original lot for my Crimson Fists project, and now there's an easier source of updated Firstborn in the form of the HH MkVI guys.

Hah! Good one.
Though the part about needing to trim down SKU's is on point. Unfortunately, the wide variety is GW's bread and butter.
But I would be willing to pick up Tau blind boxes. And I bet orks would do pretty good too - if you threw 2-3 in a single box.

So, how do these scale next to new Mk. VI or Chaos Marines? Are they proportioned the same or are they a step in between the new models and the old standard Marines?

It's curious that nobody ever ditches their left shoe because it got damaged in battle.

A damaged left boot doesn't blind a warrior to a continuing battle. A Knight with a smashed in visor or a Space Marine with powerless helmet could be.
Still, each to their own. I'm not the one getting bent out of shape because a wee man dolly isn't wearing a hat.

Do t understand people questioning how they added these to the production queue but can’t get caught up on other stuff.
We don’t know where in the queue these were, could have been sat boxed for ages after the Termies came out they may have printed a load of reds back then, and just sat on them (maybe they needed boxes printing) who knows.
It’s definitely good to see them again for those that missed out.
I do hope all specials come for people that missed out on those pricy ones before.
I personally need the plaguecaster if we get that far with re releases (maybe they’ll do them Deathguard as Blood Angels too )
But definitely looking forward to some new bits at some point.. Automatically Appended Next Post: Voss wrote:Meh.

Fantastic concept for what they were marketed for/at.
That’s not you or us here though.
If you’ve ever been over there you’d see, this is such common place it’s a great way of getting people into the universe if nothing else.

At least they're the same faction. I'm still dreading the inevitable Xenos set where we have nine really cool and desireable blind box models, but arranged so there's a Tyranid, Genestealer, Necron, Ork, Eldar, Tau, Dark Eldar, Chaos Daemon and Chaos Marine to collect.
Someone with bad luck wants three copies of the Necron, opens 30 boxes and ends up with fifteen Tau models to offload.
With the Marines, getting a duplicate is fine since you can just have one with and the other without the helmet, then if you get further duplicates you can just start modding them by switching weapons and limbs around, etc.

Series 1 was tatical marines, series 2 was terminators, series 3 was plague marines. Series 4 ought to be chaos chosen or terminators. its not like the loiadout would matter, and it would let them make some new lord and sorcerer models as the special ones.

Bad luck buddy should just buy the sealed box of nine three times and get three of each one then. Automatically Appended Next Post: Why would Chaos Daemon and Chaos Marine be in a xenos series?
Not that I think they’ll do a mixed one necessarily anyway. Could see smaller 6 model runs per faction or something. 6 Orks, easily possible.
That already only 5 different examples left from your 9 (you wouldn’t get a nid and Genestealer)

Imagine if it was set up and geared towards kill-team, perhaps as a sealed competative format. Except that would require having multiple sets available concurrently (one for each faction) and balancing the operatives in a way that it wouldn't be entirely crippling or over powered if you pulled five Marine Gunners with meltaguns. Weaker teams like guard could have more simplistic builds that allowed for putting two models on a sprue so they don't have a higher entry cost.
Anyway, I just popped in to this topic to let people know Labyrinth of the Necrons is pretty dang cheap on Amazon right now if there's anyone looking for those 5 specific guys at a reduced cost.

Wargaming and blind buy boxes don't go together. It's not an idea that should be encouraged or even considered.
Even the milder version of it that GW had for Chaos here or there, drawing your forces from random tables, is more of a hobby unto itself than geared towards the game side as you have to have an extensive collection to draw from and the expense that comes with it, all the logistical issues of getting more models to your local store or club than you end up using, and in the case of the Chaos mutations of old, taking the time and having the bits to make conversions so your models are WYSIWYG with whatever mutation you roll for. Many people detest this kind of randomness, but even if you don't, it's less of a game experience than a hobby experience. Fun if you're into that sort of thing, somewhat workable as a game if you have a like-minded group, but from a game design perspective it's just not going to result in a good game as you can't account for the inherent randomness.
There's no advantage for the customer in getting models randomly at a higher cost than a set model box with options. The current Heroes set will get you eight models for 52€, two of them duplicates. Actual Kill Team boxes with ten models cost less than that, except Chaos Marines for 55€ which also get you ten rather than eight models and have actual customization options.
If it weren't for the ability to buy the whole lot to get every sculpt, I would outright call blind buy boxes a nasty way of exploiting gambling habits for profit, but even so the two duplicates thrown in that increase the overall cost of getting all the sculpts are unsavory enough as a practice. We really don't need to throw a game on top of that to make it worse.

Wizkids and WotC/Hasbro made a killing off it for Mageknight, Mechwarrior and Star Wars & DDM with the random box approach. Until plastic costs shot up and they invalidated the plastic hordes with new rulesets.
I wouldn't be adverse to "add-on" model blind boxes for 40K, so long as they weren't the primary method of getting your army. "Heroes" with their own special datacard would be the easiest way to go, and if a single blind box is something someone can plop down from allowance money would be an easy sell. One-model-at-a-time army building (up to something like a kill team) would probably do pretty well, and I wouldn't mind it as a side avenue of getting into the game. Just not the ONLY way.
