Sternguard bolt rifle is actually better than the "upgrade" to combi-weapon against almost anything. Only common scenario CW comes out on top seems to be against very heavy infantry (T5 and up, 2+ save), after making a normal move and ending within 12" of target. Standing still, advancing, shooting at long range, any other target profile, basic rifle wins.

The possibility with having different datasheets for melee Warriors is that historically ranged Warriors were always better.
So by making melee Warriors their own thing they can give them better melee profiles to balance the lack of ranged weapons.
But you know what they say about GW, never misses a chance to miss a chance.

Reddit calculated it and yeah, Combi-Weapon is basically 100% a miss.
As long as Sternguard keep their other heavy weapons (and sarge weapons) I'm definitely wanting to do a 1st Company based list because the benefits Sternguard have will trump any extra OC value other units might carry.

I really hate the LT. Anti-[Faction] is a concept I despise, and it doesn't even make him good against tyranids. Yay, ~3 wounds with no AP. Scary guy. A small touch of harassment with his gun, and a small reroll 1s bubble that he might well scuttle away with. Seems like conversion fodder for a different type of lieutenant.
Sternguard look really good though. I don't know that I'd want to swap into combi weapons. Losing a shot each, BS AND AP, plus assault and heavy for anti-infantry mortals wound is a pretty big trade.
Phobos Lt is really the only dude I want from the box. Granted, been my favorite marine line since Primaris dropped.
No idea why combi weapon on sternguard hits on a 4+. Weird choice.

Near as I can figure, its legacy. The old -1 to hit if firing both barrels.
Its pretty hideous in comparison (standard can go stationary and hit on 2+, and innately has more shots), however, so it seems overly punishing.
Edit- removed tired math example. Ignore.

I suppose to emulate the 9e rule of -1 to hit when firing both profiles. Not sure why they would give you less shots though.
Edit: I agree with Voss. I think the multi-part kit is going to be very versatile.

I think that's just a fair way to try and ensure people actually take part and don't just spam GW with a billion emails from random emails to skew the results.
It also opens it up to club, 3rd party and home games so not just games happening in GW stores. So its quite inclusive.

The split of two Warriors datasheet is most likely because of the design they have going now. Each units have a unique ability, so that allows them to cater that ability to melee and shooting on the unit that needs it. Instead of having one catch-all ability that might be a bit less useful on one of the two roles (or a bit too good to benefit in both phase).
I'm fine with that. I have melee warriors and shooty warriors already, so they'll have their own datasheet

I like the split on the Tyranid Warriors and I'm very much hoping they do the same for the Tzaangor Enlightened in TSons, I want 3 units with spears and 3 with bows!

The smallest box in 9th was Lieutenant + 5 Assault Intercessors vs. Necron Lieutenant + 10 Warriors, so odds are it will be the Phobos Lieutenant. Not sure on the Tyranid side who is the "Captain" and who is the "Lieutenant".

The Lieutenant and Apothecary are part of the sternguard sprue, so they cant be in small boxes. Terminator Captain and Winged Tryrant share connected sprues. The Terminator Librarian is separate, and the Neurothrope and Screamer killer are on a single sprue, so it could be those models for elite + command editions

I'll be honest, I'm really not liking the new formatting of dataslates.
There's so much wasted space on both sides of each card that you're left scrolling through an awful lot of nothing in the PDF.
This is equally problematic when it comes to the 'card' aspect. With games like Warmachine, the cards are actually card-sized. Thus, it's not too hard to find room to put them. These, on the other hand, require each player to have several square feet of space to actually use them as intended.

Good points. Forgot the sprues are out. Captain vs Tyrant seems very likely then, but 5 Flamers vs 10 Gaunts feels like a mismatch. 10 Gaunts aren't as good in 10th as 10 Necron Warriors were in 9th and the Flamers seem to strongly counter the Gaunts. 20 Gaunts maybe? I wonder if they'll just do a bigger "smallest" box this time around?

I really hope the cheapest is 5 termies, the captain Vs prime and 20 gaunts. More likely it'll be the flamers which is a shame because they're pretty boring
Also unless I'm reading it wrong, the total amount of new models for Tyranids and space marines is £1000, based of the competition rules
