I've never had a metal model. GW will start selling "made-to-order" classic models in metal in early May. Do enough people really want these in order for it not to just be a waste of time for GW? Can they hold the same detail plastic does, if not, what's the point of going backward? I know I don't like them; on the whole, they look Votann, Fabius Bile especially.

Some of them. I want another of the original Chronus that came with both a "mounted" hatch version and a foot version.

It depends on the model - I'm seriously considering picking up metal Typhus from the current M2O run, for example, as I much prefer the pose to the plastic "Saturday Night Typhus" model.

Usually they hold detail better than plastic and they're far superior to GWs Finecrap to the point they returned models to metal in their lotr range when doing MTOs.
Scalecreep is a thing in 40K that's not bothering me but certainly others. I'm using plague Marines from 2nd and 8th edition side by side and like it, bases go a long way for them to look unified on the table.

Yes, yes, yes !
Good resin also, but GW haven’t worked that out yet.
Detail also on a good metal cast is better than the plastic GW uses which is a bit softer.
Honestly the only reason I like plastic is ease of use.
But I much prefer painting onto metals and resin for the nice textures that can be done.
And there are some minis I would really like to get now.

Well, over the years GW has made excellent sculpts in metal/resin/plastic. Theyve also made som real crap.
And there's some models that id prefer the metal versions.
So for me it completely depends upon the models they offer....

Hmm, wouldn't have guessed their popularity. I know a couple of Ork bosses still use metal or resin. None look as good as the plastic.

I vastly prefer plastic over metal - easier to clean-up, less pinning involved on larger models, and generally fits together without lots of gaps to greenstuff.
However, there's a number of models that are only in metal I'd buy in a flash if they came up for order.
Metal is still leagues ahead of Finecast.

There is also nostalgia at play. Minis you wanted back in the day (or had and lost/sold) and now’s a chance to get them back.
Also old minis fit the old aesthetic. So good for people filling gaps in aged collections.
I think the only MTO I’ve personally picked up is when the did the eldar bonesinger. Although the first reprint of cursed city was also technically a MTO.

if GW is currently selling them, it gives them much greater IP protection... Given GW's litigation history, I am sure this plays into this at some level

I'm sure plenty of people want them. Not quite so many at the price point GW has been offering for their old models of late.
£32.50 for four metal chaos marines - currently on the website.

Well Slaanesh is all about doing all the drugs, and nostalgia is a hell of a drug... I put my cash down for the four footmen of the apocalypse yesterday without hesitation. Already had the Emperor's Child off ebay, but I've been meaning to add seduced marines from the other gods so getting all three in a batch is convenient, and while I love the technical quality of modern plastic (and how easy it is to work with - I'd think seriously hard before going in for a metal mini these days if it was more complicated than 'superglue foot tab in slottabase, done'), those old sculpts have a specific charm that I'm absolutely there for.
Granted they're not cheap even by GW standards, but I can easily see myself picking up the odd one or two any time MTO is offering something I can use in the warband.

Member berries are toxic as far as I'm concerned. Seeing how I wasn't around for the metal times, I have zero interest in buying a hassle. Abbadon's nickname was Abbadon the Armless, wasn't it, because they kept falling off. No thanks.

I'm not sure why Abbadon's arms should have been any more prone to falling off than any other metal Terminator of the period; or why pinning them wouldn't be a simple task?

7 Ork facts people always get wrong:
Ragnar did not win against Thrakka, but suffered two crushing defeats within a few days of each other.
A lasgun is powerful enough to sever an ork's appendage or head in a single, well aimed shot.
Orks meks have a better understanding of electrics and mechanics than most Tech Priests.
Orks actually do not think that purple makes them harder to see. The joke was made canon by Alex Stewart's Caphias Cain books.
Gharkull Blackfang did not even come close to killing the emperor.
Orks can be corrupted by chaos, but few of them have any interest in what chaos offers.
Orks do not have the power of believe. |

I personally have a strong preference for metal models, they have more heft to them and they're much better at holding detail. Plastic however is far superior for complex multipart models and the bigger ones. My metal bloodthirsters and dragons weren't much fun to build, although the worst were flimsier models with smaller connection points.

Metal used to be the more detailed, plastic has come a long way since those days. The metals also tend to be a bit more 2D/flat, if they are made in one piece.
However, I absolutely hate working with metal minis, and would not buy one again. Though, I'm not going to run out to replace my metal eldar with plastics, mainly due to price.

Likewise.
But then I spent the 5 minutes all those ages ago to pin mine....
That said? I really do like the current plastic version of Abbadon alot more than I ever have the original.
For me it comes down to what sculpt I like far more than the material it's cast in.

I used to love the Space Marines in the "pre-first edition(?)" armors. Crusade Armor. Iron Armor, maybe? I think there were seven versions of prequel armor that came "before" the rat-nosed armor that the first edition marines had.
I'd love to see those again.
