RIP Tactical squad.

Suppose the writing was on the wall for quite some time already. 30K getting all the brill new marine kits, then being unable to use said kits in 40K, then the news of "Scouring Era" shift for HH.. looks like GW wants the likes of me to shift to playing 30K permanently. It's OK, all I want is a game with Beakies, Orks and Eldar, like in the good old days.

Will be interesting to see how they will play this out. They can't just throw all those units to Legends without new stuff coming in their place.. Or if they think that, sales of Armageddon might take an unexpected hit as grognards walk away from 11th altogether (I wasnt going to buy the box in any case). Didn't they learn anything from HH3 launch?

Honestly, all the Phobos stuff needs to go. Let scouts be “the scouts”. No “tacti-cool” in marines please.

Phobos marines are awesome. And I really like this tacticool take on the marines over the blingly Christmas trees they had become.

It’s also a pleasing reflection of the development of Terminator armour. Something designed for more specific battlefields and situations than your regular Power Armour.

I'd be surprised if it makes even a noticeable blip in the sales of Armageddon. I expect that box to sell out everywhere really quickly.

I'm very much in the same camp as you by the way, but I think we've got to recognise that we're very much in the minority of people who are interested in 40K.

With the old codexes still being valid, we probably won’t know the fate of units until the new codex drops for 11th. Which may be a few weeks after the launch box. So the fate of tacs won’t impact sales.

The people who are up on the latest rumors/leaks might know, but not the bulk of players.

There has not been a generic tactical squad in the starter box since 5th. 6/7th were DA chapter locked, and it’s been primaris since then.

I really don't think many people care about tactical marines at this point. Intercessors have been the base marine shooty troop for almost a decade now. I think bigger issue with the Armageddon box is that it comes with more intercessors, which according to all we know have nothing more than headswaps going for them. I think most people have enough intercessors at this point, and those who prefer the old style helmets have certainly figured out headswaps already.

Running on pure hopeium here, but…

Was it 6th or 7th were they got us all to buy more tacticals by including grav guns in the new kit? It’s not like we needed more basic bolter boys, yet we slapped down good cash for a few more options.

So what if the new intercessors give us something besides the AGL as a special weapon? Maybe some options for the sarge? Kit is kinda old at this point. So if you want the new hotness, buy the new kit. Incinerators, plasma rifles, melta rifles…

Would also take a lot of the sting out of dropping tacs is instead they were mostly merged with intercessors…

It looks like the idea is random bits of old armor in general. The Vet Vanguard has an old breastplate for example. On that note, if anyone needed any proof that "Primaris" is no longer a thing, that should be it. Apparently these even taller superhumans can just slap on old helmets that fit just fine.

Personally, I've just taken to converting extra Intercessors. Make a few Sgt options and slap some of the extras from other kits and the like. If I find myself really not needing them, I often just offload them to new players or for our learn to paint pile.

Also, Phobos are awesome, but to be fair I've never cared for Scouts.

Lets face it "primaris" were just the new updated models that got caught up in late era kirby marketing ideas which were a bit odd. Deciding that Marines needed to double their range size by basically duplicating all the unit types was just baffling that Gw got away with it.

I always thought it was fairly obvious double dipping. Intercessors are a new Tactical Squad to sell to people who already have Tactical Squads. They are juuuust barely different enough to not be directly interchangeable as a unit.

Everyone says they would have bought a new TS just for the upscale, and that may be true, but judging by sales this move very much paid off regardless.

Perhaps it'll get locked into a new Combat Patrol box?

Good. The old kit is much better. Absolute classic, it was the first 40k model set I painted and it holds up today. The sprues may be old and worn, but the body layout absolutely clowns on the monopose kit.

I really like the (old) new kit. They have some really nice muscle mass. That said, any more than two units of them gets redundant pretty quick, and mixing in the classic box solves that problem pretty quickly.

I haven't cared about any of the Marines in the launch boxes since returning in 2018.
8th: SM vs Death Guard = Meh on both sides. When I returned all I did was pick up the rule book & the 1 Codex I needed.
9th: SM vs Necrons = Bought it for the rule book & the new Necrons. The new Marines? Other than the Judicar (wich I used for a D&D figure), they went into a storage tote where they still reside.
10th: SM vs Tyranids = Bought it for the rule book & Nids. Traded off the SMs for a large peperoni pizza & 2L of Coke....
11th: SM vs Orks = Unless the Marines have something really cool (nope, that Chaplain doesn't cut it)....It'll be buy it for the book & Orks.
12th: I predict the pattern holds.

As for not caring about the Tacticals? I do. And so long as they have rules those that're in my forces will continue to be run as such.
The day they no longer even have Legends rules? Then I'll just reorganize the squads & they'll be promoted to Intercessors*, Hellblasters, etc. Very super short Intercessors as by that time the game will likely be in 56mm+ scale, but....

Don't know. Didn't buy anything in 6th except a rulebook & a few Codex. Didn't play 7th.
Since 2018? The few grav guns I decided I needed? I just ordered the bitz off EBay & attached to spare Marines I already owned. I didn't spend anywhere near the cost of even 1 squad.

Nah. I've still got spare Marines, & thanks to 9th,10th, and soon 11th, spare Intercessors. I'll just EBay the bitz. Or have one of the kids at the shop print me some....

I'm pretty sure the original idea for the Primeris was going to be all the old Marines going away, meaning lots and lots of new replacement sales in the minds of late Kirby era management

instead they got cold feet (and new Management) and instead we got 2 sorts of marines for the last few editions instead and only now have enough new players come in who 've strarted with Primeris do they feel confident enough to begin purging the old stuff

No, I'm pretty sure the original idea was to just make better-scale Marines, but then someone decided that making them Super Marines would guarantee they'd actually sell like crazy. Remember how Primaris Marines had two wounds when Firstborns only had one? I'm sure the lore had nothing to do with that.

The were strange times - lets not forget it was the same management team that didn't see value in specialist games outside of one-and-done boxed sets and who spearheaded the whole closure of Old World and launch of AoS -- which was horribly handled as a brand transfer (several months of silence and zero marketing did nothing to help the success of launching a new game off the back of some of the old models after OW got its first big cash investment in ages)

I seem to be the only one who isn't very interested in the new Chaplain. He looks rather awkward to me, especially with his pistol held sideways. And I've never liked GW's attempts to sculpt smoke effects. Another pass for me. I was unlikely to have bought the 11th Edition box set anyway - I would to pick up the Ork models separately though. If anyone wants to sell me the Orks from their box set, let me know

You do have to admire the gaul if foregoing the Tactical rock for tactical smoke.

Will the next flier be held up by a dust cloud?

I'm not into the Chaplain either, they used to pose jump pack dudes to look poised and in control and graceful but these days they seem to like making them look awkward and out of control. And skull helmets don't seem to work with primaris ears.

I mean some of the fliers have special smoke FX things developed by third parties. Can be cool.

Agreed, the new chaplain is a swing and a miss IMO. Not even considering one tbh. I even prefer the plastic one in the range right now over this Primaris abomination

This is a dust cloud isn't it? Its the cartoon "dust woosh into the vacuum from superman taking off" type effect I thought?

I think it's a smoke grenade, I could be wrong. Either way it shows a lot of audacity for the sculptor.

Looking closely, I agree, it appears to be coming from a smoke grenade.
Hard to tell though due to the limited angles we've got so far.

I'm honestly really not a fan of this style of miniatures. The flying stems may have been a pain to deal with, but I think they looked better tbh. My brain can happily just edit out the stem and not notice it, but the smoke is part of the model and looks terrible.

I usually replace whatever the mini comes with with brass rod.

I think I made the right choice in that Custodes box and not waiting for these Marines.

The only thing that sounds cool might be their new speeder.
