Welcome all to the 106th round of the Dakka Painting challenge. For the unfamiliar, this is a friendly painting competition open to members of all skill levels and experience, whether your entry is your first or you thousand-and-first time painting miniatures. Each month, finished entries are collected into a thread where the community can vote on their favorite pieces, and those votes go towards an annual overall League that runs for 12 rounds.

This month is the Open Round. Subject to the normal rules, but paint whatever your heart desires. This is a busy month for a lot of people so paint what you have time for. Have a hobby related New Year’s resolution you need to do a few more models for? Now’s the time! Let’s see 2023 off with a bang and get a great assortment of entries!

How To Enter

- You may enter up to 5 MODELS as a SINGLE ENTRY, and are permitted one entry per member per month. If you enter multiple models, they should ideally be related in some way, such as part of the same squad, unit or scene if you are doing a diorama
- You may enter at any time during the month, up to the last minute. We do encourage people to enter early, as to be part of the community, but if you can’t start until the 11th hour, that’s OK.
- You MUST post a 'proof' picture of your entry in the thread of the state it was in before you started working on it; this must be either unassembled, unpainted, primed or coated a single colour. Entries that do not submit a valid Proof Picture will not be eligible for voting.
- After this, you may post WIP pictures in this thread and your own if you wish, and on completing the entry, you may post up to 6 final pictures IN THIS THREAD that will then be used for voting. Please note that pictures in a montage or collage picture will be considered individual images for this purpose, so while these types of presentation are certainly acceptable, please keep the image limit in mind when compiling them. For example, a collage of 5 images and one separate image would count as your 6 picture allowance.

So What Do I Win?
- Points... and points mean... bragging rights for the next month! Following the vote, points will be awarded to every entrant. This year, the Points you receive will be equal to the Percentage of Votes your entry receives in the final Voting thread; if you get 10%, you get 10 points, if you get 6% you get 6 points, so on and so forth.

These points will be used to form a league table, which will be updated month on month as the results come in.

How Long Do I Have?
This challenge begins 1st of December and will end at midnight EST on January 1st. After this, I shall compile the finished entries into a new thread, and voting will run for 5 days.

I was saving this in case 'mercenaries' got up as a theme, but now's as good a time as any:

Dambo Kweltz, Iron Claw Space Pirate from 1987. He's seen ten editions of 40k, and the only constant is this: ain't nothing hard enough to put Dambo Kweltz in the ground.

Okay, I have something to enter that I've been wanting to do for a looooong time.

Some of you may or may not know, I have a webcomic called Tangentville. It's been a labor of love of mine for a decade now. It has an insanely diverse cast of oddball characters. But the one many readers seem love most is a reality-warping little Figment named The Madness.

(He's the red & yellow jester guy on the left)

I got it into my head that I wanted to make a miniature of him. So I sculpted one from scratch:

Wish me luck!

Struggling about in Asmos territory.

Been contemplating this months entry as much as the fabric of reality and cosmic foundations it feels like because I cannot for the life of me settle on anything solid..

Options are a Wazbom blasta jet..
a single nurgling in anointedsunmass (xmas) theme.. (sigh, yes its this bad)
Or my first Votann .. on which I still am not sure about the colorscheme to use (something violet.. dunno though)
Then I also thought about doing a Harlequin Starweaver..

Thing is, I want to do something with snow this challenge..
My entire Ork army is set in the base theme of a wasteland..
My nurgle army (when I actually get to ever painting them) is meant to be set in an ocean-theme.
My Votann could go every way because I had not decided yet on them but I want to be certain about it.
Harlequins are in a dark crystal kind of theme base.. which wouldn't work with snow because that is already to base scheme for my AOS disposessed dwarfs.. aaargh..

I could travel to the nearest city with a train to buy something but I'll end up spending 300 euros again at the least when there because I only go there once a 4 months or so.., not going to pay for a 15 euro ticket and just buy one thing..

I don't know what to doooo...

Nice assortment so far.

This is a great month to look over the pile of shame and see if anything calls out to you. Or if there are things on the to-do list that need a little extra motivation to get over to the display shelf.

Going to paint this stormhawk myself. It will let me check the “paint the 3 oldest things in the primed pile” off my yearly goals. Going to try a new blue technique on it. As a flyer it does not need to be quite as uniform as the footsloggers.

Just a reminder I set the end date as Jan 1st, so this is going to run at least a day longer then normal. Make up for the time lost to hangovers this month…

I'm going to paint this here thingy. Not sure what it is but it mostly just consists of flat surfaces. Shouldn't be much work to get it done.

I will try to complete Sprinter transport - alternate Votann vehicle with some kind of catgirl crew . I like the design, in my opinion it looks more simple and utilitarian than GW's model, more like something that explorers of new worlds would use. The interior and crew are painted with grey base. I designed my own frame for glass to use simple transparent foil.

No brakes on the Harlie train.

I am going to be painting this Velma pinup. She's another big one. Should be fun.

I'm in, of course. I haven't decided what to paint this time around, so for the time being I'll be taking "before" photos of whatever I work on and enter whatever I'm most satisfied with.

Now showing various models from the previously adandoned projects!

Painting total as of 3429/2024: 56 plus a Deva King statue
Painting total as of 12/31/2024: 107 plus a set of modular spaceship terrain and two walkers and a quad mech and five giants

My 8th and final Tonk for the project!
Techno-Rex

I’ll also be looking for Dakkanauts to sponsor each of the Tonks in a bumper Holliday knockout tournament series of battle reports to crown the undisputed Top Tonk! So look out for that and PM me if you’re interested in picking a Tonk to support. (It’s just for fluff and fun, no real commitment required)

That's great to hear. It means I created modern art!

It's a billboard. I feel like doing a freehand again. Alternatively it's a drive-in movie screen if real life totally screws me over this month. Which I really hope it doesn't because I have a vision and half a sketch.

Ok I just got back from another city by train, bought about 280 euros worth of minis.

Among these.. DISPOSESSED.

So the snow theme is go!

My entry will be a disposessed copter, probably the bomber this time cause I already have a gyrocopter (which I like more but that aside) but they only had one left, otherwise would've bought all if they had more lol.

Also got some more Votann and Aeldari stuff, and ofcourse a Tyranid balloon cannon.

Who needs moeney when you can have minis.

I'm in, I have a pdf copy of Bommerz over da sulpher River that I'm making a hard board for.
So I'm turning the tokens into usable game pieces.

First up are the 1d6 flak, I couldn't find decently priced hydra's so opted for OG 1990 manticores.

This is exciting. It’s great to see an original character from another creative outlet given the hobby treatment. Looking forward to seeing this.

Right, these bad boys (and girls) arrived

8 Khorne linesmen, ready to become... the Krampus Killers! Yup, I've decided that whilst the World Eater colours were a fun idea, let's get festive!

Proofpic of the beauty I traveled to another city for, they had one left WOOT so ofcourse bought it (as I said in previous post, would've bought more if they had more) and will make the Gyrobomber this time as I already have a Steamcopter. (which looks cooler to me but whatever, I think its better to make something different anyway)

Snow theme is go!

That moment you build a Gyrobomber's (my entry this challenge) rotarycraft.. and find out that you made your (past made) steamcopter's rotarycraft completely wrong lol..and there's no way to rectify that and you'll just have to accept that one of your most loved mini's is wonked.

And for my masochistic Xmas entry I choose….

Knight Azyros…because I want to attempt to do half decent shade and highlighting of tmm (also he looks kind of angelic, and Christmas is about the King of Kings after all)

Here’s my proof

Ok 2nd and last wip/proof.

First swapped the colors but will do my Gyrobomber in the same colors as the Steamcopter I made about a year or two ago anyway because it looks so good.
Also gave the pilot that xmassy vibe with the red and white.

Can't wait till the craft is done and I can make my snowy base, i love making snowy bases.

I'm kind of between projects right now, and since I'll be visiting the US over the holidays, I don't have a lot of time to think of something spectacular for the end of the year. That said, I have narrowed my potential entry to these three choices, which are at the top of my painting queue:

1) the last three Knucklbones dudes

2) Freya on Hildisvini, from Bad Squiddo. I swear I took a proper Before photo, but it doesn't seem to have saved.

3) The miniatures contents of Demonship from Black Site Studios

I'll try to get as much done as I can and then enter whichever model(s) I am most satisfied with.
