I’m holding off on that one until I’ve got my head round the rules, and some games under my belt. That way I’ll actually have a clue as to where the issues arise, and how I might want to tackle it.
I’m certainly not against “this Formation has red rims, that formation has green rims”. Anything to make the game being played as straight forward as possible.
Heck, even a blob of colour under the base and under the tanks could do the job.
Or for those who like to mix and match army composition between games (more power to you!), spare bases or similar with coloured flags, placed next to each unit to denote its parent formation/detachment could work. Or just a random 20mm base painted in a specifying colour would also get the job done.

The way I've done my Blood Angels for 2nd Ed Epic is with flags for the HQ (naturally), company colour shoulder pads for the Marines, and then detachment number 1, 2 or 3 painted on the underside of the base. Pretty functional and still looks nicely 1993

blob of colour on the back of the base rim here for formations, so far only for my SA, the tin men only have one infantry formation and one armoured formation so not an issue there
likewise the SA only drop one armoured formation currently (though they do all have markings in common)

I'm too much of a stickler for aesthetics to use different base colours in a cohesive taskforce, but company markings and banners are great details for just such purposes. Almost like that's why they even exist, historically, to distinguish stuff on the field

Yeah but I can be the only who can’t, and indeed can’t be arsed, to paint to that level of detail
Don’t get me wrong, if you’ve painted clearly, visually obvious company markings as your grouping, and give me a cheat sheet? Sound as a pound! But I’d in turn expect you to respect my chosen work around, provided I give you my own cheat sheet

For my company commands they all have a unique banner but the pile of other stuff has no way to differentiate between formation currently. Wonder if reversal of secondary colours will do for vehicles but different colours on say tacs will be a pain. I run mono legion for what its worth.

The formation tracking is definitely a challenge, I've seen numerous ways discussed to keep track of it. I like the idea of flags, unit markings if in keeping with the look of the army. Having marks on bases I've seen in other small scale/mass battle games which can have similar issues.
The way I get around it is to make things easy for myself. Army list is printed from the Legion Builder App which gives a clear formation size and breakpoint, that is left where I can read it easily. I use big formations with clearly defined roles (big demi-company, drop-pod company, armoured company) and then I organise my dead piles carefully into groups as casualties build up. It is definitely one of those things that is harder if you have a big infantry force of the same Legion though for example and several demi-companies, that may get mixed up during the battle.

I'm hoping for some more unique units, stuff that's more than just regular 30k but then rescaled...

I reckon we will see that, but not sure when.
The Imperator/Emperor class Titan from Space Marine 2 was possibly taken from a sculpt design - though not being literate in that way, I couldn’t tell you if that’s just a commonality of design software, and/or using the existing digital sculpt to ensure accurate greeblies.
But there’s definitely stuff of yore which just isn’t 28mm practical that Epic is the natural home of. For instance, the Leviathan, Capitol Imperialis, a wider and larger variety of Space Marine Lander and so on.
Variant Titans, too. But like the non-core chassis, I very much expect those too to be inherently less flexible in loadout.

For some reason I doubt all of that will happen though. Correct me if I'm wrong here, but has the Thunderbolt Fury been given a LImp treatment? What about the Space Marines stuff from Legions Imperialis?
I remember when we were teased about way more Titan variants / classes and possible armour variants for existing Titans when modern Epic scale was only Adeptus Titanicus. Sadly enough, those never happened.
I'm a bit pessimistic here, even though I'd love to see way more funky weird big stuff.

I can definitely fill in some of the gaps. I've been trying to do that for Vanguard Miniatures, but I also notice they are a bit risk aversive in fear that folks might not want it because it doesn't look exactly like a GW design. I've been doing some stuff independently, but that's mainly (semi-)civilian hardware...and the random additional alternative Knight weapon.

On a different tangent, is there ever a reason to take a drop pod assault formation rather than a Demi coy filling the transport slot with dreadpods? I can't find anything in the rules that says that dreadpods can only carry dreads so its half again the points to double the carry capacity (and allow assault marines) and halve the footprint of the deepstrike.

Hmm. I don't think the intention is to use Dreadnought Drop pods to transport infantry - there'd just be one type of drop pod with a largeish capacity. someone doing that would be straying into TFG territory.

Well my first thought on that would be 'I guess my Assault Marines can't use Drop Pods', rather than 'the only pod my Assault Marines can fit in is a Dreadnought Drop pod, therefore all marines can use Dreadnought drop pods, therefore I save on points and footprint'.
One for the first FAQ/Errata, I guess.

Clickable reference for weapon traits and that.
I reckon my wee Sabres might be pretty damned good at stripping Titan void shields, as Shock Pulse means they strip two at a time.

So definitely a potential answer to Void Shields, and any excess can certainly dent the Titan Target.
But what to deliver heavier hits with? Hmmm.

Been looking at my collection, and I think I want more infantry sets.
Tanks? Got them coming out my ears (8 Kratos, 6 Predators, 16 Sicarans of varying styles, 16 Sabres, 20 Rhinos, 8 Spartans, 6 Xiphon, 2 Fire Raptors).
Dreadnoughts? More than I can shake a stick at.
But infantry? I do want more. Spesh as Dark Angels Assault Marines are really good at clearing out garrisoned buildings, between base stats, Jump Packs and Phosphex. Yet I have a mere 8 stands of them.

Likewise. I could do with a few more termies and assault marines.... although my tanks would do better not being minimum detachment sized.

For clarity I’m not objecting the current Infantry Set.
You get a good amount of stuff in it, I just fancy more of the, well, fancy bits.
But, as I also believe basic infantry is an important part of any army, I wouldn’t say no to a smaller set just of Legion Tacticals. Say 8 stands worth on a single sprue. No bells, no whistles.

Another infantry support option would be great too, something that doesnt have bulky and so can go in rhinos/pods/termites. Its pretty dull only having the choice between the OP missile or UP plasma...

If you're not willing to get prints or use proxies it is a challenge to get hold of the specialist infantry, especially in big quantities. Only other way is to splash the cash and then end up with a load of unused tactical and plasma infantry, the latter of which are the unwanted stepchildren of Legions.
Although part of me is glad the support infantry aren't available separately, as they are pretty OP for their points costs and everyone's army would be full of the things
