I saw this in the movie theatre. It was destiny, and I went with my kid and about 4 of her friends.
This is not the worst movie I have ever seen. Not event he worst movie I have seen in a movie theatre. The worst I can say about this movie, is that it is kind of boring and by-the-numbers. The editing does not help, Blanchette is hamming it up and power-posing all over the place. Right out of the gate they make a joke about Hart's height.
I would say, this reminded me of those Disney "Family Action" movie's but with more swearing and pointless, PG violence. It's worst sin is being mostly forgettable.
If Eli Roth thought this was going to put him back on the map? Well, he has more work to do.
Edit: To be clear, when I said "Marvel-ized" before, I meant making a group of wacky unknown characters get together for a combination of fighting and funny with world saving stakes. They managed to follow the formula, but in a very obviously formula way.

There have been multiple reports from people who worked on the film that Roth finished his cut and turned it in around 2021/2022 and that it was a hard R for violence and gore. The studio spent the next year and a half re-editing and re-shooting to make it into a family friendly PG-13.
Box office is rarely a good way to decide if a movie is good or bad, as we've seen good films do poorly and bad ones perform well. The audiences general reactions seem to be ranging from bad to "meh" is probably a better indication of the quality of the presented film.
It seems another case of "I don't really know the source material but I want to adapt it anyway".

I think its more:
"I don't really know the source material but I want a committee of uncaring goons to try to hit as many generic potential test audience happy points as possible, because that is totally how we squeeze the most money from this thing, whatever it happens to be".
It sounds awful :(
Please excuse any spelling errors. I use a tablet frequently and software keyboards are a pain!
Borderlands is doing bad enough that they're raffling Xbox series X in their ads where I live to try and get engagement with the movie, which in itself is pretty sad since I don't think that console is in very high demand either.
I don't think it was ever going to be a good fit for life action. I just don't think cartoonish graphic violence translates well into live action. The Borderlands setting is one where live is very cheap, and it loses the humorous edge when they are more real IMO.
Could probably be a good basis for an animated series, they've more-or-less already done that with the Tales from the Borderlands games.

I do agree that fantasy/scifi can often shine better in animation because you can do ALL of the fancy stuff without it costing a fortune or looking like CGI-fest; but still live action can work for this.
Honestly I was cautious when I saw the actors in the trailer. Borderlands is high action, high energy, totally bonkers wildness. And many of the actors in the trailers just didn't have that buzz and energy about them.
Borderlands is fun, high action, a few gritty nasty bits and LOTS of guns. It should be Beverly Hills Cop 2 ending part when Billy opens up his carload of guns + Tarantino levels of blood and explosions in Kill Bill or similar.
Borderlands is also full of casual cruelty though, including by the "good" guys. Thats the part I don't think translates well. They aren't just violent to do a job.
The setting is incredibly brutal.

As is tradition, the Pitch Meeting has been posted.
*checks*
I appreciate him calling out Guardians of the Galaxy like that and pointing out why all the crappy bandwagoners keep failing at it.
You really can tell when the guy thought a movie was utterly irredeemable.
"So fans of the game won't be surprised and non-fans of the game won't know what that's about? Who is this movie for?"
Asking the big questions there Ryan. The big question no one who made this movie thought to ask even though calling it a big question is a pretty big stretch.
This movie was so terribad for me that halfway in I just started skipping through for the sake of "having seen it" *cough*.
Up til halftime I had not really enjoyed any part or aspect of it, whenever there was a joke attempt instead of my mouth curling up it curled inward showing teeth and my experienced attempts to hold in the maximum cringe failed.
Now, this seems to be -the usual- with todays movie releases, but there is only so much cringe a human can suffer before he starts to turn his computer-room into a ruined derelict and him or herself into a revenant spirit trying to find something valuable to cling to..
This movie is like a horcrux for the sake of alienating one to the concept of art, there is nothing artistic in this movie.. it is the most stale and artificial latch-on to something that was once (read: during 1-2 and the handsome jack spinoff) a good series.. which is hollywoods modus operandi when adaptations are concerned; take that which has earned praise and bellyflop it into something else expecting the praise to linger, which it only does to point out the contrast.
Borderlands is like a whailing spirit, hoping to remind people it was once alive but is now best exorcised.

The fact that there's not even a spoilers warning at the beginning shows you how little people would have actually watched this.
heh, little mis-cast' "actually mister cast" *holds up a cast with a moustache*..
First time I saw this chan, will bookmark it for future reviews. Nice one.

"Why would i be lying for Wechhudrs sake man.., i do not write fiction!"
Hmm, yeah. The humor just isn't there. It's a pretty big issue for a movie that is so flavorless and by the numbers that the only thing it might actually have going for it so utterly fails to work.
Borderlands could use a lot more buildup throughout. It's got that vibe of a string of unrelated scenes to it rather than a story with actual direction.

I don't know the video games but that sounds a lot more fun than what the movie provides. The characters could do with some actual character. You'd even have an easier time getting some humor into the movie if you gave the audience something to react to, even if it's only crass and nothing more.
Isn't that also why you get Eli Roth, because you have a warehouse full of fake blood and need to dispose of it for tax reasons? Should have let the man do his job.
Nehekhara lives! Sort of!
Why is the rum always gone?
Yeah, this movie was in post-production hell for a long time.
It is also exhibit A for "Tell and not Show" in a movie. There is actually a lot of character stuff in the film to tell you their motivations and some of their backgrounds, but it is all told to us in a throw-away dialogue.
I still can't believe they got Cate Blanchette for this. Someone she loves must have been fans of the game, ala Bob Hoskins in Super Mario Bros.

Yeah, whatever...it is an awkward film but I enjoyed it in the same way I enjoyed Rock'n'Rule, Solar Warriors( "Solar Babies"? ), Streets of Fire, Fifth Element and The Phantom Menace. Its a gang of misfits on a road trip adventure, and you don't care as long as you're hanging out with them.
BobtheInquisitor wrote: You put Streets of Fire, The 5th Element and the Phantom Menace in the same sentence like they’re all of similar quality. That’s confusing.
Oh god, not another Phantom Menace fan. Yes, its legendary for introducing Star Wars to a new generation of SW fans and was unfairly treated over the years, but Streets of Fire and Fifth Element are still good films worth watching too. Bob, there is more to cinema than just Star Wars and I do recommend broadening your horizons...
I’m not entirely sure you’re being sarcastic, but I’d like to give you the benefit of the doubt.
But just in case…
The 5th Element is a unique, stylish movie that was also a mainstream blockbuster. Streets of Fire is a unique, stylish movie that wasn’t mainstream, but is still a cult favorite for good reasons. The Phantom Menace was the movie that killed Star Wars even though it may still take decades for Star Wars to realize it’s dead.
Saying Borderlands is comparable to T5E, SOF and TPM is like saying Morbius is comparable to Shawshank Redemption, Big Trouble in Little China and Battlefield Earth. Like, what?

One of those things is not like the others.... and not in a good way.

I was being sarcastic. Please do not give me the benefit of the doubt. The debate on Phantom Menace is 25 years old now with no hope for a cease fire. Leave it be.
But seriously, I was only saying that I found Borderlands an awkward film but I enjoyed it's "road trip" vibe, which it does share with those other films. Streets of Fire doesn't exactly go on a road trip as such but in a small way they're misfits that club together to pay the bad guys a visit, which gave me the same feeling. All the films I mentioned are variable in quality but the point is that I will sit down and enjoy all of them for that reason - and others such as a good soundtrack, vfx or animation.
