Tangential but related...

Shah Rukh Khan is the biggest movie star in India and, as India is the largest country in the world, possibly the biggest star in the world. I saw a clip of him in a movie set in Chicago and figured it would be neat to track down so I googled SRK Chicago film.

Google's AI said he was in Dhoom 3 which is set in Chicago.

(Dhoom 3, Dhoom meaning BOOM!, is one of the biggest action films in Indian history)

Shah Rukh Khan was not in Dhoom 3.

At all.

Aamir Khan was.

I’ve noticed a lot of posts that are designed (and do) trend have all sorts of unrelated hashtags just so they show up on searches, float to the top, etc.

I wonder if this is impacting AI? As all they are are glorified search engines

It 100% impacts AI along with images that are incorrectly tagged; bad drawings; incorrect information and more. Another whole layer is information just being out of date (heck this impacts search engines too - there's plenty of popular articles that are old, but rank high and are just out of date info)

Right now AI developers are hungry for pure raw data volume to work with their AI. At some point they will likely have to stop with that approach and start restricting AI to very specific sets of information such as specific libraries of information. At least for building and using AI that have a chance at providing reliable information.

Closed data libraries also means people against AI or against your AI can't as easily mess with it by seeding a volume of false information.

Discord is the "new hotness" for "old geeks who lost their forums"

But its still a very niche population compared to FB's population. A LOT of the trade groups are on FB rather than on Discord.

I have noticed that a lot of newer/current firms are starting to get Discords over FB social interactions; however many often use FB for news rather than just interaction.

Discord has its own issues though its got better (heck you can have threaded channels now!). A big one with Discord (less so but still also present on FB) is that Discord is very instant reliant.
If your new topic/question/comment doesn't get instant attention it will just get buried very quickly.
IT can deliver very immediate social interaction, with the cost that in many cases if what you need isn't there right at the instant you need it, then you might not find it.

Something I didn't mention but is relevant about social-media sites is that its algorithm driven, meaning everyone is in a bubble under the illusion of not being in a bubble while Discord is thematic server driven meaning everyone is in a bubble while choosing to be in that bubble.

Only sites I use are like this. I have always been determined and stubborn about never using anti social media sites like FB etc. Maybe I'm just getting older but I can't see any relevance or advantages of them.

I've used discord and it just seems like IRC with extra bells and whistles.

IRC is fine and all but it's totally ephemeral and doesn't replace a decent forum for me in any way. It's a totally different experience.

I ended up getting irritated with the corporate nature of discord (the way it always advertises at you and so on) so I stopped using it. I think old school fora are my favourite style of web communication, I like that it's organised purely chronologically and that posts stay around for as long as the forum does, and I like that you get to know people on a forum.

I have gotten back into scrolling reddit again due to being a bit exhausted and it being a very low energy way to switch off, but I think I'd honestly be better off just lying down with my eyes closed rather than doing that...

Well I agree that oldschool fora are best, but social media is just AI/algo galore with an added surveillance factor.

Oldschool fora and discord atleast are about you wanting to be where you're posting.

I use Facebook largely for keeping in touch with family and friends who aren't within 'seeing them regularly' distance. Messenger hubs are not a useful format for that, and I struggle to find any value in Discord. It's awful to navigate, and the instant nature of it makes it useless as either a 'keeping in touch' tool or a 'sharing the hobby' tool.

FB still has its uses, they're just different to what they used to be. FB used to be useful for actually staying in touch with friends and family. Now I use it almost exclusively to find and sign up for gaming events and interact with the actual feed as little as possible. Sometimes I use it to check reviews, or whether a local business is actually still a thing. I never use it in the way it's supposedly intended to be used and I suspect that's the same for a large number of people, which is what's led to the current situation as FB desperately tries to recover the ad revenue it was getting organically in the past via gradual engakkification.

Discord is singularly useless as anything other than instant messaging for me. It annoys me that so many things use Discord because it's just impossible to use in the way most people try to use it. Our local gaming group uses one and that's more or less OK, with fewer than 50 users total and about 15-20 being fairly active. Anything above that and the format just makes keeping track of anything impossible. You can't have a discussion because it's not structured for that and if you divide it up into loads of tiny channels each one becomes its only little desert of content. Discord is just weird to me. It started out as a really useful tool but seems to have tried to branch out into multiple different areas and it's good at precisely none of them.

I still get use out of Facebook.

When we lost Dad in July, a single post and pretty much everyone that had to know, did know. Which is a lot less taxing than phoning round everyone, which for me would involve trying to find their phone numbers, if I even have them.

Of course, I live 500 miles away from the rest of my family so my situation there is probably less common.

But it’s also helped me find gaming groups, and as a result I’ve now signed up to a Heresy escalation campaign, kicking off next month. This means I can put the thousands of points and thousands of pounds I’ve spent collecting, painting and basing said thousands of points, to some use.

Inaccuracies less so, that's just how AI works. It's not just a Chinese Room, it's a probabilistic Chinese Room. Those errors are there because it was statistically likely for those particular words to follow the previous words. LLMs are incapable of understanding anything, so can't check for accuracy, just how often things occur, and the publishers of those AI generated articles clearly don't care enough to do an editing pass.

As for spelling errors, I'd give even odds of intentional changes to the model to make it seem more human, those errors being present in the training data often enough for the LLM to reproduce them, or it being rewritten enough by a human to have them pop up.

He already has one. You can play with Grok if you're a Twitter Blue subscriber, and it's pretty notoriously bad at parroting right wing conspiracy content as fact. Mind, GPT4 has also been doing that, so at least it's in good company.

I have no Twitter account, and never will.

And I do wish news reports would stop referring to things as “Elon Musk’s starship, Elon Musk’s Cybergerbil”.

He’s just a money man, albeit one with a canny eye. He invents nowt. He only contributes funding. Which is an important thing for any product development. But the man is otherwise a complete goon.

musk was part of the founders when those from chatGPT were still non profit and has on multiple occaisions called for a slowing down of AI adoption. Out of all the "billionaires" he's probably the one that you should be LEAST concerned about. Meanwhile Amazon and google are far worse especially in the context of market dominance in their respective fields and have also a worse trackrecord in regards to worker treatment / custommer treatment too boot.

Musk literally had to pay out millions in OSHA violations because his factory doesn't use safety striping (he hates the color yellow and refuses to use it anywhere), and has repeatedly lost lawsuits because it treats black employees like slaves, with a company culture of racism that segregates those employees to a part of the factory they call "the Plantation" and features frequent slurs and depictions of black employees as monkeys. His LLM regurgitates conspiracy theories alleging that the hurricane in North Carolina was used to cover up child sex trafficking, he personally produces and shares deep fakes of celebrities and politicians, and he is currently violating federal election law via directly bribing voters and running an illegal lottery.

I just use it to check on distant friends/family but been seeing a lot of fake history pop up there. Several times it was an AI generated image meant to look like an old photo of an African samurai and family in Japan and with an article about African Samurai in the 14th to 18th century. The photograph was from a time before photography was invented and the comments were full of "I knew it!" and "the real history they're trying to hide" type posts.

Another stated that China was originally inhabited by black people and that Asians colonized it and drove them out.

Not trying to pick on African history it is just the two most egregious that stood out from my brief stops to FB and I imagine is just the tip of the iceberg in regards to bad history.
