With Paul Sawyer in ill health, and his nominated charity in mind? I’d like to help organise a Dakka Gaming Meet Up in the UK.

Venue I’m open to suggestions, and we could even have multiple. But it would require forward planning, and a gate fee paid to a trusted central PayPal or what have you pot.

What matters here is that Dakkanauts can meet up relatively locally or centrally to take each other on across a board, paying an amount to Fat Bloke’s nominated charity.

I’ll admit I’m not great at thinking this stuff through, but there’s the idea in like, embryo. I’m of course open to reality and brand related complications

Commendable and would love to see it happen! I would highly recommend putting out a rough draft of your plans and present that to site administration to explain your intentions and goals. Also, seeing as this will involve dosh, keep that part of the project transparent at all times, because you just know there will be pricks who will be vocal about that.

All valid points. I’ll go and have a good think about things as I see them, then return to this thread with the results, where I’ll be entirely open to critique and criticism, so we can collectively hammer this idiot’s idea out into something workable.

In this case: What is your goal and how do you intend to get there? What's needed to make this all happen?

This thread is the perfect sounding board for such an undertaking and can if need be, moved to another place of the forums with more traffic.

Just a thought, it might be easier to arrange this around a major event/convention being held in the country. At least for a first meetup it might prove easier to bolt it onto something that people already have on their radar and can combine into a single trip.

Wouldn’t mind an annual meet up along similar lines, but let’s hammer out and try the first, yeah!

If we can get a venue sorted out that works for all interested parties in good time I will have a word with the various companies I am on terms with and see if I can get some swag sorted, either as participation or better yet raffle to raise more money.

Love this as an idea and well done Doc for trying to get things off the ground.

Tagging on to an existing event of some sort sounds a good idea, although you then have the difficulty of this being a fundraiser and people already paying for a ticket for that event etc. Also the dates would need to work, and something like Salute would be quite chaotic as there are already so many people there.

As for venue, WHW would be an obvious one but might carry restrictions in terms of charging/generating money. It's a good cause but that doesn't always circumvent big corporate rules. The other really big stores/venues of Firestorm Games in Cardiff or Wayland is quite a way out East. Are there any others that might be suitable?
I know Warlord themselves have their own venue in Nottingham, but I've not been there so not sure of size and availability.

Pretty central, if a bit of a drive for me personally. However Stockport does have a train station, and Manchester at least is well served. And it says it has room for up to 200 gamers/

All venue suggestions welcome though,this is just the system-agnostic one that came to mind.

Element games is a fairly good venue, Firestorm is much, much better though. Been to both for tournaments. Other suggestions would be Entoyment and Bad Moon cafe.

Tagging onto an existing event or con I think would be a nightmare just due to table space and how rammed they get.

Here is an idea:
Call it Butty Ba-con.
Organise at Firestorm or Element and book a bunch of tables.
Some of us bring demo/participation games of whichever system they want for people to play/take part in. This way you could get people coming, having fun & rolling dice without needing to bring an army and other stuff.
And would be a nice focal point rather than just meeting in the Firestorm cafe or whatever.

Might reach out to Warlord, see if they want to weigh in.

Given I’ve never even tried to organise this sort of event, I’d be happy to fade into the background and just be the instigator.

I have organised a fair few tournaments over the years and so am happy to take over that side of things if people wish.

Thinking as well as if Warlord donate anything, we could open up a trade table where people donate what they like, all proceeds go to the charity? I'm sure I have got a few boxes of stuff at least from the pile o' shame..

I know Firestorm is well organised for events - they have staff who help planning specifically. You get advertising etc. so it would be broadcast to the local community as well as whatever else we manage on here.

Doc as you thought of Legions Imperialis as the original focus, what about some sort of massive presentation/demo game? Could get a 12ft table, as much stuff as we can get on the board (get people from Dakka to contribute). If people want to join in and take control of a formation or so, it could be a participation game?

Bit randomly, some gamers have got themselves the old Debanhams in harrow on the hill to use while a new tenant is found. They have the space, though local clubs would need to provide enough gear.

Pacific - Not sure how the venue would feel about having a sale table but its an idea to float.

On the massive game idea though how would people feel about a 2 game tournament (2000pts, fog of war in effect, 2.5hr timer) and then conclude with a massive game of traitors v loyalists with everyone taking part? Not overly keen on randoms joining in as things tend to go 'missing' from previous experience.

Ideas starting to come together here!

Firestorm do have Bring & Buy occasionally, so they might not be averse to a charity sale table.

That sounds good with the Legions - I would say either have the gaming event and people playing, or the mega game, as I am not sure you would have time for both (unless it was a very long day). The 2.5k event I am playing in in a few weeks is 8.30 - 5 and that is just two games, for example. It is not a quick game to play.

The reason I thought of the participation game was that we wouldn't want to turn away people that didn't have Legions collections (to get some of the larger Dakka population). Perhaps there could be other things going on during the day to help draw people in?

As Firestorm has a cafe, wonder if they might be persuaded to donate an amount from every Bacon Butty sold to Paul Sawyer’s nominated charity?

Great idea- if I can make it along I'll come. Let me know if I can help in any way with a donation or some time as I have some limited resources and skills (I'm the landlord of a small pub, and the treasurer of a small games club in Leicester).

Is anyone planning on managing this and making it happen?

I would love to, but honestly do not have time between family, work and other commitments. It will be a worthwhile but big ask for anyone who does it.

I spoke to someone at the weekend who knows Paul and it sounds like anything like this would need to be done sooner rather than later..

Im south westbased too, so Firestorm is ideal - though I don't mind traveling further afield either.

If it goes well, and there’s the possibility of an annual event? Would anyone be game for a Tale of Four Gamers run up?

Perhaps agree to kick off with a Combat Patrol or Spearhead (if going main games), then a month on month agreed budget?

On making it an annual shindig, I am down for that, used to do the same back along to raise money for a mens mental health charity.

On tale of x gamers, this is the idea me and Brook started with but we struggled to work out the logistics of it. I would happily support such an endeavour but would probably not take part as I do not have the time or enthusiasm to start a 17th project...
