So, you're feeling under the weather, a little depressed, or just bored - what movie to you reach for?

I'm less interested in what you think the greatest film of all time and more interested in what movie you enjoy watching the most?

I honestly don’t know. I Iove my movies, and have a decent sized collection. So I tend to fly by mood.

Sometimes when I’m down, I want a silly comedy. Sometimes I want an action flick, or something gruesome from horror.

Usually an old comedy. Clue, Blazing Saddles, or Young Frankenstein top the list.

Sometimes a day needs a couple of beers and a Godzilla movie. Sometimes the more classic “straight” ones, or the campy fun ones.

Big Trouble in Little China and Aliens also hit the screen frequently.

It depends on the mood, but for no brains cheer up/mindless fun the wife and I enjoy watching (and apologies one and all)....

The Rocky and Bullwinkle Movie. Fun cameos, a few memorable line, lame jokes, a dash of satire and de Niro at his career nadir. and I never even saw the 60's cartoon it was based on.

I don’t think I ever saw the movie, but watched the cartoon a lot growing up. Classic cold war entertainment!

Starship Troopers is the right combination of fun and action I find.

Aliens (Directors Cut) and Jaws are also a couple of go-tos, just because they really grab me and compel me to watch for the entire runtime. Terminator 2 probably as well.

But, as Doc says, I love my films, so there’s quite a few more on the list!

The thing is, each of those conditions call for a different type of movie. If I'm feeling under the weather, I tend to go for mindless action. If I'm depressed, I want comedy. If I'm bored, I want something that'll burn time efficiently, either a really LONG movie, or a series. And if I want a movie on as 'background noise', it's a movie I've watched often enough to visualize the scene without actually having to watch it.

And that's why I have a hefty collection of DVDs. To suit those different needs, and many others besides.

Inglorious Bastards for when I'm bored, its a movie I can quote lines like there's no tomorrow, every scene with Christopher Waltz is fantastic and it scratches my itch for WW2 stuff just enough as a history buff but has the entertainment factor of a ridiculous elseworlds story. Runner up would be Saving Private Ryan or Kung Fu Hustle.

Animation wise, Under the Red Hood or Justice League: Crisis on Two Earths. The first one is still by far one of the best DC animated movie in my opinion, and the latter because James Woods is absolutely badass at being Owlman.

If I'm feeling down, probably Shawshank Redemption or The Green Mile.

Never really had one.

I will go through phases where sometimes I'll rewatch the same film over and over as a kind of background-noise when doing something. Eg Cowboys and Aliens was the last film I did that with. It's not a constant repeat, but I might watch it several times over the same week.

But its always a different film rather than anything I gravitate toward specifically. Just too many awesome films to have one or two that are highlighted above all others

My top three in recent years for when I need cheering up are Guns Akimbo, Kate and Bullet Train.

I usually game for one classic or another, so the full list is way longer and depends on how I feel.

Answer changes depending on the intent of the viewing.

For instance, if I'm home, laid up on the couch sick as a dog or whatever, and just need something to nod off to, or if I'm dealing with insomnia, it's Apocalypse Now.

If it's that I had a bad day at work, and need something to let off steam, I could go funny and watch 5th Element, or Monty Python and the Holy Grail, or Blazing Saddles

Some times, as a "just cuz" movie, Blade Runner or BR 2049.

Movies for me are more of an 'I've got nothing else on and need to veg out a bit'. Currently whenever the fancy takes me I'm working my way through a box set of Steve Reeves sword and sandal movies, along the same lines I've got through sets of Harryhausen, Godzilla and the wider Toho Cinematic Guys-In-Monster-Suits Universe, and other Japanese and US sci-fi of the 50s through 70s - they all come from this one vendor at a collectables fair I go to for vintage toys who has these cheap dvd sets, they're good for undemanding entertainment and disappearing down trivia rabbit holes reading about them on wikipedia on the ipad while they're on.

If I genuinely need comfort material, episodes of Guy Montgomery's Guy Mont Spelling Bee. Three seasons so far, across the NZ and Australian versions, they're like the lovechild of Taskmaster and QI, comedians riffing randomly but also constantly reduced to abject panic, it's kind of a magic chemistry that produces absolute comedy gems without fail.

My go-to movie when I have time alone to sit and paint, I pretty much always put on Predator. It's just long enough that I can use it to time a painting session, thus avoiding or minimizing the sore back that comes of sitting at the painting table for hours, and I've seen it enough times that I don't actually have to watch the screen to enjoy it.

Now showing various models from the previously adandoned projects!

Painting total as of 3429/2024: 56 plus a Deva King statue
Painting total as of 12/31/2024: 107 plus a set of modular spaceship terrain and two walkers and a quad mech and five giants

I don't know, it depends on the mood I'm in.

If I'm just bored? Then I'll just scroll through Prime until some random thing catches my attention.
Could be any genre, any quality, something I've seen before, or something I haven't....

If I'm feeling under the weather?
My go to is to curl up in my recliner & turn on either the Western or Classic Movie Channel from my local cable company.

Depressed?
Nothing heavy or serious. And nothing where I have to read subtitles.

Thinking more? For me, I think it’s TV shows.

I can watch Deep Space 9, TNG, Supernatural and Classic Dr Who* pretty much endlessly. And with the glory of streaming, I can pick particularly favourite episodes to fill the void when it yawns wide.

*Nowt against New Who. But whilst time has dragged me, kicking and screaming from childhood through to middle age, it’s yet to drag my childhood out of me. Sylvester McCoy is Best Doctor, Curse of Fenric is absolute perfection.

I noticed a typo, I assume you meant Rowan Atikson was the Best Doctor and Curse of the Fatal Death is absolute perfection.

Same as the rest it depends on which of those things I am.

So my at least once a year movies, and sometimes more, consistently for a decade (meaning i tend to put them on to feel good or when I'm sick) are in no particular order;

-Eurotrip
-Stick It
-Cabin in the Woods
-Starship Troopers

And I don't think it's quite 10 years old yet but I am Number 4 gets put on a lot

There are other movies I'll put on that fill the requirements in the original post but just not consistently like these.

I rarely watch any movie more than once to be honest.. Movies aint like music albums or singles to me, I want watching them to be a unique one-off event most of the time. Sure, I've had reruns of famous titles on TV, but those I am not really watching after the first time, its just the TV being on..

I love McCoy's final outings and especially Fenric. A friend and her partner looked like the two young girls from it, and when I mentioned this they weren't familiar with the classic Who, and were naturally worried what kind of characters I was be referring to, so I said, "Nah, you were both like....'Come into the war-taaaaa!'" complete with the beckoning hand gesture It gave'em a giggle!
