Conan is one my favorite films but I don't think it would be a good film to start out with unless you know that she would be sympatico with its gender and brutal survivalist politics.

Amidst the mists and coldest frosts he thrusts his fists against the posts and still insists he sees the ghosts.

Just a point - don't launch into Hell Boy 2 without seeing Hellboy 1 otherwise it will feel incomplete.

OK, we can scratch Conan and add Warcraft.

...

Just so you understand our emotionally stunted relationship. This all started when I introduced her to the Christmas classic Die Hard.

And then she introduced me to the Nicolas Cage classic Captain Corelli's Mandolin... on my Birthday.

So for her Birthday, I introduced her to the world of Kaiju films with Pacific Rim. I found it odd that she had missed seeing it in theaters. Strange, huh?

Do you see a pattern? Did you have fun on your birthday? I saw my first Taylor Swift performance on mine... in the movie Cats.

So, I found out that she's never seen a fantasy flick outside of those gawd-awful Harry Potter films, which she believes is the end-all-be-all of fantasy films.

If she can enjoy Die Hard she'll be fine with Conan - its just an 80s action flick same as Die Hard; just set in fantasy.

Also Warcraft movie was solid - its honestly a bit of a shame it didn't do better and they didn't get a sequel (or a dozen). Though I still think it would have done better if they'd made the humans CGI as well and just animated the entire thing considering that every-single-other thing in it is pretty much CGI

I'm not saying she can't handle Conan, I'm saying I don't think it is a good introductory film.

You're probably right.

What about mythological films like Jason and the Argonauts or Clash of the Titans? Or Athurian films?

The only way we can ever solve anything is to look in the mirror and find no enemy

Wait. If she made you watch Cats on your birthday, I say the gloves come off. Show her Beau is Afraid. It’s more surreal than fantasy, but it does have a giant, maneating …uh, monster.

My extended family all loves Labyrinth. If we introduce the film to an outsider and they don't like it, we know it is all time to point and howl like bodysnatchers.

It came up in another thread, and I can’t believe no one remembered it here:

I'm not sure that really is a good example if fantasy.

I've been leaning into either D&D: Honor Among Thieves* or John Boorman's Excalibur.

*I did have the urge to grab the Justin Whalen/Thora Birch/Jeremy Irons original D&D movie, but I would have to sit through it too.

Maybe we should remove personal bias and let science decide, don't you all think? Just watch the movie with the cute tiefling. That's, like, the objectively correct choice.

Maleficent's a good call. A subversion of a fairy tale the neophyte is familiar with would work quite well, and it has modern pacing and special effects.

And for a really random, terrible idea- get a fantasy film that has everything. Magic, powerful giants, dragons, mind controlling sorceresses, knights, Merlin, Arthur, a desperate battle on a floating castle, and Mark Wahlberg.

Transformers- The Last Knight.

Klawz-Ramming is a subset of citrus fruit?

Legend?

Legend is a good one.

Shame about Tom Cruise, but we get a lot of Tim Curry.

Krull is another solid one.

Hawk the Slayer is……of its time and budget.
