You mean bring it to the tabletop again. Warcraft had a miniatures game that crashed and burned.

Do you mean WHFB 8th edition?

So how good is the Starcraft gameplay? After reading it my guess is that it is quite interesting to have the supply mechanics and the command cards with the buildings giving bonus.
However the game itself looks like it is quite 1 dimensional with just rock, paper scissor.

It had a miniatures based board game similar to heroclix right? Not a proper battle game.

Yeah it was more a heroclix game, than a proper wargame/miniatures game. I have a few, they are kind of a nice keepsake but found them very difficult to get hold of here and not really what I'd want from a game (mostly miniatures to collect and paint).

I watched the how to play video. Base gameplay is not a million miles away from base 40K with the obvious major change of alternating activations and the inclusion of a core mechanic for preferred targets to encourage combined arms. Buildings seem to give strategm like effects, base dice mechanic and movement all seem similar. Didn’t see enough of the supply mechanic and reinforcements to judge that in the video.

It’s tough to say if its worth a big cash outlay now to get a good deal on game that could do very well or just whimper away.

As with any licensed game, you should probably only get it if you're comfortable with what's on offer here and not on the basis of long-term support.

Honestly with fantasy/scifi wargaming I'd say that's the same of a large number of games that aren't main-line GW (even then there was that one time they blew up their own fantasy mainline game).

Even if the company and game hang around, local support can be highly hit and miss

Licenced games even more so because there's always a chance that the profits are survivable until you factor in the royalties/licence fee. There's also always the chance of the licence holder pulling the contract/not renewing/raising the costs etc...
Heck there's even the risk of burnout where the game has a huge launch; gains loads of popularity and out-strips production to the point where supply is so spotty that popularity falters because people just can't get hold of it and give up.

So yep I agree, only buy-in if you're happy with the idea that in 1-5 years the game folds

Yeah, good call. It's worse with licensed games but "am I happy with this product as it stands today, or am I buying a promised lifestyle" is a good test with anything.

Yeah - for me I'm 100% happy and would love to build a huge Zerg force in time. Even if the game folds (and I hope it does not) I'll still have some awesome starcraft models that I'm happy to own.

I've seen some.heavy hitters ala art of war start coverage for it. It's being discussed on GW related podcasts and streams.

I think it might have wider reach than anticipated.

Everlasting games don't exist. Maybe just 40k is the exception. And maybe it can die too.

GW streamers will do other things and right now SC is "hot" so the algorithm won't punish them for doing a video. The real measure is if those channels are covering the game in 6 months time. Even then that's purely an algorithm thing not an actual popularity thing. Theres loads of middleweight games that do well which don't feature on those channels because doing a nonGW video tanks views cause its not "HOT" (also why a good few will title everything in GW terms - so "This game will kill GW" and "GW didn't see this coming" and so forth)

yeah, we have seen this with Halo Flashpoint where some Kill Team channels picked it up on release to make videos but went back to GW soon after

I really wanted to go hard on this, but as I said in the Gundam Assemble thread, I am really trying to evaluate games on their mechanical merits divorced from any love of an IP.

Obviously this is pure subjective, but if someone showed me this game, IP agnostic, I wouldn't even remember it 24hrs later. This game seems... fine. No red flags, but also nothing clever or exciting.

Local stores are committing to this now and a few more of my game group are trying it. I'm just stoked to be able to roll dice with my group members that is something other than a GW game.

I think gameplay wise it has 1 interesting mechanic, which is a bit similar to Conquest. The reinforcement/supply mechanic meaning that the game escalates over turns.

You start with 6 supply for example and thus can put only 1 hero, 18 zerglings and 2x roaches on the table. This increases by 2 supply every round so you can bring in more and bigger stuff.

Mantic have recently started sending stuff to bigger channels who wouldn't give them the time of day normally. Paint it, play a few games, get back to churning out GW stuff!

(hmmm I might be a bit bitter to be honest - I did LOADS for Epic Warpath and couldn't even get a reply to an email ha haa)

they are not the only ones but even the channels that are focused on bashing GW have problems getting people to watch content about other stuff.

that is sad to hear, though might just be bad timing because the people usually doing the interactions changed during the last months (I count myself lucky because it took me 2 emails to get something back to make content about Ghost in the Shell)

Hell, not even GW's own games are safe.

How many channels cover non-40k games during a new edition launch weekend, then drop it almost immediately to focus exclusively on 40k until the next one?

It's also important to note a lot of content creators hate this system. Because it locks them in and limits them. Loads doing 40K stuff would love to cover other games, but each time they do the algorithm openly punishes them.

You can't cover a cool other game if the system openly refuses to show your followers the video because it didn't hit a certain threshold within moments of being uploaded.

And as a user if you want the algorithm to work for you, you actually have to be really strict on what you do and don't watch.

In the end its a system built for Youtube. Not content creators and not fans.

It's funny because it's not even 40K content but Space Marine content in particular that many seem to focus on. And if you check the views they genuinely do much better than any other kind of video. It's mad to me how much people absolutely love GW space marines but it's undeniable!

Yeah like I said its not just popularity; its self-reinforcing because of how google makes their algorithms work.

Esp for any paid-channel where the creator is getting a decent income reliance from it. They HAVE to do marines and 40K because that's the big thing the algorithm pushes. Do anything else and it tanks.

That often means smaller firms have to pay more money for a sponsored video because the creator has to factor in the income loss from that video going live.

Insane to think people get paid for looking at a box of toy soldiers outside of ad/membership revenues, never mind having a price list.

Does anyone know how big the miniatures are for this? Like, actual heights when based and assembled? Couldn't find any info other than it's quite a bit bigger than 40K. (relatively)

I asked about Terrain, and they said there is a mm guide in the rule book. i guesstimated preparing for 38mm scale figs and a content creator said that feels right. but hard to know for certain.

A Terran Marine is scaled to the same height as a Primaris Marine.

Huh. Considering how Terran Marine armour is set up (it extends your limbs significantly, with your actual hand being in the suit's wrist, and your feet being in its ankle - ie, what some people misunderstand Terminators to be), does that mean that the Terran in that suit would be regular 40k scale?

Interesting.
