File under: "Teh Spayce Marienz are a haven for the socially maladjusted."
So... apocalypse Lucky 13's game today at the local GW shop... I made arrangements to be late... showed up in time for the last turn.
Side 1: Space Marines.
Side 2: everyone else.
Teh Spayce Marienz players had already been whining since about 11am because the "everyone else" side was given "Without Number" to make up for being outpointed by about 7k points. especially one jack-off that was practically screaming "they don't need without number anymore, the sides are even" everytime a space marine model was removed.
did I mention that "Teh Spayce Marienz" had 2 titans? (including a reaver)...
previously mentioned jack off above got really pissy when I placed one of my 3 warp rifts (completely legally) in the spayce marienz deployment zone... I don't normally respond with vulgarity in public.. but I let him have it with something to the effect of "let the guy running the f-ing game, interpret the f-ing rules." Never mind that there's no interpretation needed when the rules for Warp Rift states "place the warp rift ANYWHERE on the table." and that I was being halfway sporting by not putting all three in their dep-zone and spreading my stuff out.
That kid left pissed off shortly there after.
game ended on next turn. The only "eveyone else" units close enough to count for victory conditions were the demons that I just summoned...
so.. "Teh Spayce Marienz" win handily but are still screaming that "everyone else" got without number....
next apocalypse game is in 2 months (the most this store will do is 1 every two months.. mostly because of the crying that the space marine players bring everytime they show up for these)... not gona be so nice next time...
4 warp rifts using the new demon codex.. the rest of my points in Havoks...

Even GW stores should understand who Apoc is meant to cater to - veteran level gamers. Having little Timmy add in his Macragge marines to take part is inevitably going to slow the game down for everybody else, and I would question what enjoyment/learning little Timmy gets mindlessly moving his models and rolling dice when someone yells at him to do so. Surely Timmy would benefit better from a small, one on one game with a staff member?
In my area the local GW runs monthly Apoc games. 8000pts 4v4, only veterans are invited. Lots of heads up is given, and with the help of the staff each team gets together in advance to talk about who's bringing what/what strategic assests to take...etc. They try to rotate players and prevent the same 8 guys from playing each time. So far it's been a blast.

For me, Apocalypse is one of those games that is played with real friends, not just friendly acquaintances at your local store. I will play a game of 40k with just about anyone. There is no way I want to spend an entire day with thousands of points in stuff just to hear people gripe and moan and complain when their stuff dies.

My store does monthly Apoc Games. We limit armies to 2500 per player, theme the games on one army vs everyone else(this month it's Orks), and if equal players don't show up, we either make the teams equal(some players with "half point" armies) or someone doesn't play(it sucks, but equal teams run smoother). We try to get things as organized as possible to start fast and fit in as many turns as possible.

Well, I'd have to say I see his point. Game is already underway, some guy shows up with 3 warprifts that should have been deployed before the first turn. The problem is, the GW employee should have told you 'No' when you asked about showing up late, or at least asked what you are bringing, and realized the problems it would cause.
3 warprifts dropped late in the game is disruptive as hell, reguardless of how 'legal' the tactic is. You did something that you had to know was going to get complaints, and then complain about the complainers.

Since I made arrangements to show up late with the blessing of the GW staff that were running the game, I placed my Warp Rifts before my first turn.
Or are you suggesting that I can't use them because I (made arrangements to) show(ed) up late?
You're absolutely right.. what was I thinking? I should just bring Spayce Marienz next time... only Spayce MArienz win and only winners play Spayce Marienz...

you're absolutely right.. next time I'll just bring 3000 points of spayce marienz with heavy weapons.... never mind that it'll end up being 21,000 points of spayce marienz against maybe 10k of everyone else.. because spayce marienz stick together and refuse to fight each other...

reminder: I had 3 rifts.. I only placed one where it could do anything. If I had listened to the GW staff (who had already put up with 4 hours of spayce marien howling) I could have put all three rifts next to the objective and actually won the game on the last turn... I didn't... so a big FOADIAF to spayce marien sympathizers.

I believe I was implying that you can cry at the fact that the rules were misinterpreted or you can use those misinterpretations to your advantage, doing both makes you an ass. If you wanted to be sneaky and play by the rules use flank march and bring your units onto their board edge and ASSAULT them that way, but don't cheat and then claim the kid was being a bad sport. I ran a Lucky 13 Apocalypse game this weekend with 16 people (8 per side) and around 62,000 points on the table. 1 guy ended up showing up 3 hours late and since we were still on turn 2 I let him come in and bolster a flank. On the next player turn (so bottom of 2) I added another player on that same flank for the opposing army. The only complaints I got at the end of it were the fact that A it wasn't long enough, and B one guy didn't understand that a random pile of rocks wasn't an objective.

Well, why beat around the bush on this one.
You were late by four hours, and there really wasn't a reason for you to play at all. If it was the last turn, it was stupid to let you even put your stuff on the table. It bent the rules, delayed the game, and was bound to cause problems.
You complain about the GW store, and the people there, but it seems like you were the one causing the problems, and it's probably better for all involved if you hadn't shown up at all. You didn't have fun, and it looks like you were pissing off other people while you were there. Why bother?
You came on the board to whine, and don't like it if anyone disagrees with you.
And you think spelling space marine wrong somehow helps your points. Whatever

Seriously, I don't see you winning points with anyone here with your current argument..
Yeah, I understand the game was tilted.
Yeah I understand that all the "Spayce Marienz" were on one side.
Yeah I understand that the other guy was being immature.
But don't be a hypocrite about it, especially when you show up 4 hrs late.. If I knew I was going to be THAT late for any gaming event, I would just save everyone the trouble and tell them I can't make it, not cuss some annoying little prat out because I'm pissy the whole crew isn't happy with my late appearance and dirty tactics. Then busting everyone's balls for saying what you did was fairly asinine just makes you look like your trolling..

Big mega-battles at stores are typically hellish, disorganized affairs run either by a bossy know-it-all or someone who doesn't know what they are doing. There are too many people playing at a small table, half the figs aren't painted, some guy shows up with twelve Hammerheads, and everything takes forever.
Its best playing big battles when you only have four to six people and the sides fighting each other make sense. I've recently had the scenery and table space to run Apocalypse games in my basement and it makes for a much more enjoyable playing experience.

I expected the game to go until the advertised end time of 7p and not show up 4 hours late and place my models for the staff to finally decide they had enough of the whinging from several of the more vocal Spayce Marienz (omg i spelt it wrong again!!!!1!!111!!!eleven) and end the game 3.5 hours early.

All I'm going to say is that in order for an Apoc game to work at a shop with a lot of people playing - you need someone there running it. Especially if there are younger kids playing.
Among vets, it's great, but with a lot of guys, it can get hectic.
I still think showing up late with Warp Rifts, etc, and making the GW guy running the game (who also probably was having to deal with normal crap at the store in addition to running the game) deal with it, is probably a bit much.
But that's one thing I know makes playing Apoc at a shop like that suck the GW guy running it probably has to deal with all the normal crap of running the shop in a day, since they generally don't have the people to focus on "just" the Apoc game for the day.
Luckily there are some people who put resources into making the game run in that kind of environment.

The way to do it. APOC goes down every 3 months at the FLGS, and last APOC we did the above and also had players sign up ahead of time with the understanding that they WILL be there the entire game. Yea that was definitely the way to do it. Too many people just gets messy. I think we were bumping against the top end of how many people we had in that game (what, 12 total?) but honestly I can't think of a single one I would suggest we give the axe to without feeling like we had cut a good guy unjustly.
I am looking forward to finishing my bloody basement and getting a few 4-6 player games on down there. Should work out well too, unless Salvage and Studder crack their tremendously elevated craniums off the ceiling. I don't know that the remaining 4-5 of us could drag Studder upstairs and into a shallow grave with out the use of a towing winch.
