CMGs? CNBCs? CWMDS???

Just wondering what kinds of "those" kinds of games people play.

I play Magic The Gathering.

Is a fun game, and since most of my friends play it, a good way to kill time, even in the pub.

I used to do some of the CCGs, but I quickly learned that my friends would get into it, like it, buy and build uber decks from ebay, kick my butt untill I got tired of playing it, and then stop because I stopped, thus what money I did put into it was wasted. I try to be very selective of what kind of their current fads I invest in.

I started up Magic around the time of 3rd edition. However I quit paying for cards when they wiped out the value of a bunch of my stuff by printing the "chronocles" expansion around the time of 4th edition. I still have all the cards and play on ocasion, but all the new stuff just got bigger and better and faster and stronger till the game got rather silly. That and the internet calculation of deck effectiveness got out of control and sucked a lot of the fun out of things.

I'll sink my money someplace else from now on.

I've played Magic off and on, and kept my binders and decks. I wouldn't mind jumping back in if that's what the group decided to do.

Dabbled in Warlord and Pirates, both of which were also good fun.

The rest? Not as compelling.

No.

CCGs are a trend that emerged during the period I wasn't doing any wargaming. By the time I found out about them, it was obviously too late to join in because of the way the cards keep changing. Also they seemed too abstract.

A friend of mine was a total fanatic, but he couldn't get me into it.

I'm writing a load of fiction. My latest story starts here... This is the index of all the stories...

We're not very big on official rules. Rules lead to people looking for loopholes. What's here is about it.

I haven't played a CCG since the days of the Star Wars CCG from Decipher. I own 10 premade decks of the Middle Earth CCG by ICE. It's my favorite CCG and quite thematic. Really feels like Tolkien. The artwork is wonderful too, and it's from the pre-LotR movie era too. I still have a list of things i'd like to get for this game.

I've played a few CMGs - mostly just Axis and Allies Miniatures, but I haven't bought a booster since they effectively relaunched the series and increased the tank size.

I play a lot of board games though, more so than tabletop gaming (which is really just an extension of my boardgaming).

http://www.boardgamegeek.com for all your boardgaming needs. useful site for researching a game or looking at it's components.

I like a lot of wargames (hex and counter, block, etc) and generally stuff that is thematic.

Railroad Tycoon is my favorite game, followed probably by Descent (great dungeon crawl).

Played a bit of VS System back when I was working in a store, as they were really pushing the game and wanted all the staff to be familiar with it.

These days, I play Yu-Gi-Oh with my brother and his son... The cartoon irritates the hell out of me, but the game itself is actually a lot of fun.

CMGs, dabbled briefly with D&D minis, but found it a little tedious. We play a lot of Star Wars, and the occasional game of Axis & Allies War at Sea. Also have a bunch of the Star Wars Pocketmodels, which is ok for every now and then, and a whole slew of Pirates ships, which we're slowly writing new rules for...

Will probably be checking out Monsterpocalypse as well... too good an idea to not give it a whirl

Played MTG for the longest time, but then gave that up to play L5R which I then played for a long time, but ultimately quit also. I still have a deep longing to play L5R again as I loved the game very much.

To make a long story short, I became too competitive and my opponents didn't enjoy playing me. So I quit and made a personal vow to not play CCG's ever again.

For some reason I never took on a completive nature with 40K, I can't explain why because I honestly don't know why. And that's why when I made the decision to game again I decided to play 40K instead of any CCG.

Can't stand CCGs. I bought a MTG intro box a few years back when some mates got into it, but it just didn't interest me. I don't like games that are that abstract, unless they are really simple. I can't be bothered learning loads of abstract "games-y" rules which bear no relation to any fluff or story.

I have collected a few CMGs though, some of which have extended past the point of the starter pack and a couple of boosters. Generally however I find the gameplay isn't interesting enough to get me bothered about buying more than a handful of boosters. Our group still goes back to them from time to time if we fancy a change of pace. Some we play from time to time are Rocketships, Pirates, Horrorclix, Dreamscape, Star Wars (the assemble-the-models-from-bits-of-card game, not the plastic models game). I can see us adding M-poc to the list next month too.

PLayed the 1st ed 40k CCG - they then did a 2nd ed with no backwards compatability.
Never bought another CCG again. However I have been picking up the cards for almost free (often just for postage) and am getting close to 4 of every card in the game, and as its a dead game I just need to teach others to play (reall simple) and get some good games in.

Played the pirates collectable assemble game- really enjoyed it but only bought the first release.

Almost have the entire Marvel Heroclix 1st release and a sentinel. Loved the game but as 40k and WHFB suck up all my money (or rather their novels are these days), I couldn't be bothered buying more.

I used to play Magic, and the old Decipher Star Trek CCG. I had about a 2 year stint in L5R all the way up to Pearl/ Drums of War and still have about 2-3k cards left over. Recently I started playing Vampire the RPG, and as a break from the pen and paper game we do a session of Jyhad or whatever the older Vampire CCG is called. It's a lot of fun to play the CCG for exp in the game rather than another session.

I played Shadowfist and the 1st edition 40K CCG.

Shadowfist died off in my area for a while and when I figured out it was still being updated I realized that my decks were now out of the loop and I'd have to buy tons more packs just to get the cards I'd need to update my decks.

That concept really pissed me off. Say what you will about 40K but at least when the rules make your army less than optimal you can go out and buy or convert exactly what you need to get your army back to the way you like it, you don't have to go randomly purchase stuff hoping to get what you need.

And the whole 40K CCG was a debacle. The fact that they just retired the whole game and started over again still blows me away.

We all sound like a bunch of Ex Junkies, here...
I too kicked the Magic habit years ago..Right before Ice Age..
Funny story was a few years back I visited a buddy that was at his parents house.
While hanging out he started digging threw his closet and found a old starter box of magic.
Acting like he had just found gold we where both excited to see what cards where inside
(We would build decks and put them in starter boxes) When he opened it, it was full of lands only..
basically worthless. He about cried... I laughed so hard, I did cry...

Years later I played a little Clix and bought random CMG figs for my D&D game but Magic
really made me sour on all collectable games. When I see "Collectable" in the title I
loose all interest for the game.

I played Magic from 1993-1997 (when I was in college), and then again from 2002-2004. In 2004, I sold off a lot of my stuff and bought 40k armies. I kept my sets (Full sets Beta-Onslaught).

I recently picked it up again because some of my co-workers started an office league where we each did a $25 buy-in and no cards from anywhere else are allowed.

It's a fun game to play at lunch time, and even after all this time, it has some pretty involved strategies. Probably why it is has lasted this long.

Only problems with Magic at the moment are single card trumps (Reaver Daemon anyone?) and the gradual erosion of traditionally 'Green' abilities with them cropping up in all other colours.

Having said that, I do still enjoy it, particularly in multiplayer games.

A bizarre array of focusing mirrors and lenses turning my phrases into even more accurate clones of

Star Wars CCG. The best card game ever.

Apparently you can still play. There's a player's committee and they re-create new cards using old ones. Might not be the same as tearing open a new pack, but at least you don't need to pay for them.

Constructed magic play has always bent towards whatever the hot card at the moment is. I vastly prefer limited play, whether it is a league, drafting or sealed-decks. People cannot just go to the internet and buy someone else's deck in those environments.

Went on a spree and bought 700 $ dollars worth of cards for M:TG. HAve a really nice elf deck and a really horrible to play but awsomely themed Legendary Dragons Deck. Spent a ridiculous amount of money on Yu-Gih-Oh cards, but I played them a lot for about 4 years. Started Dragon Ball Z Card game but no one around me played it so I gave it up. Started the secend version of Warhammer 40k CCG but the same thing happened. Also have a limited number of Heroclix and D&D, though I have managed to luck out and get almost all the rare models I needed in under ten boosters. (once got two planeswalkers and another legendary creature that sold for 12 bucks in one magic booster. Total the equivalent came to over 50 dollars at my local gaming store buying seperatly)

M:tG works because it has an actual cost mechanism that builds over time. In limited formats (shoebox pool, draft), the true power stuff drops out and players can have a lot of fun.
