Ridin' on a Snotling Pump Wagon

Nice simple one here that I hope nobody can fall out over.
Game doesn't have to be GW by any means, but I don't want to see the rubbishing of other games as justification for why another is superior. You can of course compare, but keep it to opinions only.
For me, it has to be Fantasy. First of all, it's the look of a painted, ranked up army deployed and read for battle. The crowded blocks of Infantry, the proud and noble Knights, armour gleaming, and the Artillery menancing firing lanes from the rear. It is a fantastic sight.
And the sheer joy of the game, when playing against someone of roughly equal skill. Just the way the rules work, a headlong rush into enemy lines will get you nowhere, so even the seemingly disorganised rabble of Orcs still has a tactical thought behind it, some kind of trap somewhere waiting for the opponent to fall in.
The early skirmishes are great fun, as the forward and lighter elements of the armies meet and blood is shed for the first time. And more importantly, to drive your enemies scouting and fast cavalry units from the field, and knowing this has made your life that much easier.
Then of course, comes the crux of the battle...with Flanks either secured or broken, and careful manouvers of previous turns, it's time to get your hands dirty and do some hard slog in honest melee. To know that despite your opponents confidence, that hero over there is packing a nasty surprise. And then with the rolling done, the lines shift. Sometimes it's all in one players favour. Others, it's a 50/50 split, and this is when the real gaming begins (usually turn 3 or 4). This is the point the reserves, Fast Cavalry and Skirmishers make their presence felt, having either lurked at the back, or spent the previous turns harassing the Artillery. To know you can add *just enough* edge to your crucial combat is fantastic. And frankly, its even better when it works.
And then, suddenly, it's all but over. One side is in disarray, and with luck, the other is in a position to exploit it to the full, running down broken Regiments, picking off lone characters with bowfire....Absobloodylutely fantastic.
The game is just satisfying when you find some decent opponents. Because of how combats resolve, no unit is ever as meek as it seems, as commited in the right place at the right time, they can help snatch victory from the jaws of defeat. No other game I have played comes close to this. 40k has it's moments, and I'm sure Warmachine appeals to some, but for the sheer exhiliration of leading an army, rather than a few squads into battle, Warhammer to my mind is second to none.
To sum up...of all the games I have played, it is Fantasy Battle where I feel victories are determined by player, not army list. Sure, sometimes it can happen (Gunline isn't exactly a taxing option) but that is few and far between in my experience. And if at the end of the game you can genuinely know that you have been outplayed by your opponent, surely that is the point of playing?

For me it is a boardgame...
Lord of the Rings by Fantasy Flight games.
Up to 5 players work together against the board to try and destroy the ring. Complex, strategic, and fun. Takes about a hour to play...

One of my favorites is Space Hulk. Simple, fast and can be very tactical.
The original board is awesome and had so many combinations it was always new to play. But when you start making your own board pieces to go with it, the game got even better.

Cyberpunk 2020 2.0. Great feel, fantastic system (think d20 only with d10s), great attitude, real focus on role playing and not just roll playing.
Warmachine/Hordes: Fun, tight rules set, fast paced, challenging, decent fluff, Steampunk! and so far, the people I play with/against have all been very low-key.
Battletech: my first miniatures game, played it a lot in college. You always remember your first love.

Guinness: for those who are men of the cloth and football fans, but not necessarily in that order.
I think the lesson here is the best way to enjoy GW's games is to not use any of their rules.--Crimson Devil |

I think fantasy has that attraction of a 'snap' moment. When someone's charge hits home and you break their army's back in the space of a few dice rolls. 40k can be similar, but it's usually a moregradual grind, with squads wearing each other down before the coup de grace.
I'd really love to try Epic, but it seems like you need a dedicated crew to make it happen, as the players are far and few between. Plus tracking down the models seems like work.

Lord of the Rings Skirmish Game is my favorite to play with, however 40k is my absolute favorite when it comes to background, painting, reading, videogames and such. Dark Angels for the Loss!
Though Fantasy comes close second in both these categories.

Talisman is pretty much my favorite board game ever. Not the redone one the old one with the giant dragon tower. God that was so awesome.
Warhammer Quest was another good one.
Bloodbowl though is my favorite GW game hands down. Ill also just say its the best set of rules GW has ever created. It is literally perfect in execution and playing. I mean seriously you do not get better rules than BloodBowl.

Hi .
Favorite GW Boxed Game...Blood Bowl. The most elegant and efficient rule set GW have ever produced IMO.
So straight forward and intuitive, and tons of tactical concideration.
Favorite GW ttg....Epic Space Marine .(I played Orks because of the fun rules, think 40k 2nd ed but far bigger and better,IMO!)
Favorite strategy game 'Thier finest hour...' Battle of Britain, Fighter Command takes on the might of the Luftwaffe in a duel of wits and courage ...
Favorite Skirmish game , Bodycount .20mm Nam .'A tense tour of duty '.
Favorite Tactical Battle Game -Armies of Arcana.Just such an adaptable rule set, I can use ANY fantasy or Ancient army.
Best RPG..Rifts.
Just my opinions...

I love naval war games and space combat. BFG reminds me a lot like Victorian naval combat in space.
A close 2nd would be Flames of War, but really that's because you can use 15mm WWII minis for so many different rules sets, so that's not really a "one off" game choice to me.

GW boxed game- BLOODBOWL. It's such a smooth game, the rules don't get in the way of the tactical elements of the game. Also, works well if played as a league.
Tabletop Wargame- Warhammer Ancient Battles The bascis of warhammer are great, I've tried many different rules for various wargames, and this is still my favourite. I like the speed of this game, there's no magic phase, no war machines, and the longest missile weapon in my army are 16". All the sides are well balanced so the winner is decided by the best general, not the best army list. My preffered era is the dark ages in england. Saxons, picts, and romano-british.
Roleplaying game- Rolemaster SS If you have an organised GM this is a superb RPG. It's not as fast or abstract as the popular D&D D20 system as regards combat, but i prefer to run a game with less combat and more roleplaying. I've never run any other game where the players are so cautious before entering combat.
