It's just got through the door and I can say it looks great!

The miniatures are beautifully detailed and the book thick and nicely laid out with artwork.

Gunna spend some time going through it now with a brew and some lunch.

Cheers

What's the art like? The Beasts of Chaos and old Hordes of Chaos books both had some of the best art for fantasy I reckon. Stylistically the Beasts one in the single best fantasy army book.

A really good mix of old and new.

There's about a piece every other page so it accompanies the fluff well.

I can confirm the built in Light Armour, which when added to the Scaly Skin gives you a 4+....

Am tempted to go a bit potty and do a monstery list.....Dragon Ogre Character, Troll King bloke, loadsa Trolls and Ogres, Dragon Ogres, and as many Shaggoths as I can squeeze in.

But this will come after my Dark Elves have been revisited, which has to wait until the end of next month when I fully expect to have my Savage Orcs done and dusted.

Show some pics of the metals! Especially Sigvald! If you could get a detail shot of his back/neck that'd be awesome! Does he have a horn on his neck showing?

Hey dudes.

Mine just got here too. I'm a miniature nerd so here's what I thought.

The Chosen.
These guys aren't that great - they seem a bit too old-school and are big on the 'I have a skull stuck between my horns' motif. In a similarly old-school vein, they're buggers to rank up. They're not awful but they certainly don't make the Chaos Warriors plastic boxed set look obsolete by a long chalk.

Marauder Horsemen
The horsemen aren't bad and their horses are excellent. They come on the Marauder frame instead of being separate generic horses so they're properly Chaosed-up and they have a nice lightly armour yet spiky look. The faces, rather than the heads, are separate, which look wierd on the frame but lets you choose between helmed and unhelmed horses (if that makes sense). The frame has lots of heads, both helmeted and of the hairy and angry variety. They can be armed with spears, flails or handweapons, and shields. They have a nice sense of motion to them, especially a couple of the heads which have hair flying in the wind.

Chaos Knights
They don't mess with the 'Chaos Warriors on Horses' schtick but the horses themselves are again ace - they look like proper bulky stomping machines and again they're Chaosed up to the hilt. The lances look great as well, oversized man-skewering implements of doom. There weren't any unhelmed heads on the sprue, which I thought was disappointing. They're tough to rank up thanks to the width of the horses and the size of the shields, in particular, although the shields look great (especially the one with the eyes).

Chaos Warhounds
Not much to say about these - they do the job well although they look more like hyenas than wolves and they reminded me very strongly of LOTR worgs. There aren't any extra bits on the sprue - you use everything if you make all ten of 'em. They have separate horns which sometimes join with their ears and looks a bit strange. On the other hand they look fast and nasty, which certainly fits the bill.

Nurgle Sorceror.
He looks a bit lumpy and there aren't lots of detailed trinkety bits like I'd expect on a wizard. He's got a lot of character, though - he's a deformed squat lump wearing a sack with a silly hat and the usual hint at pustules and maggots.

Wulfrik the Wanderer
Wulfrik is basically a beefed-up Chaos Warrior with a scarily big beard. Nothing very unusual, and he looks more like a Marauder chieftain than a special character. His background is similarly dull - his schtick is hunting people down and carrying bits of them as trophies, but that just sounds like what any other Chaos dude does anyway. He does have enough size (he's a big fat viking dude) to stand out from the rank and file, and the model has all four Chaos symbols hidden on it somewhere if you look closely, which is cute.

Chaos Lord on Steed
This is one cool-looking model. Again the horse is amazing, a properly spiky steed of the apocalypse. The lord on its back is well-sculpted but fairly generic - he doesn't have any options but his beefy Chaos hammer is quite cool and his shield arm is actually a slimy tentacle. He looks properly bad-ass, which makes up for his genericness.

Champion of Khorne
Another souped-up Chaos Warrior but a really cool one. He has a choice of a helmeted head with a typically OTT Khornate headdress, or a creepy skull-mask. I used the skull mask for the champion of the Knights regiment. A cut above the norm.

Khorne Lord on Juggernaut
Holy cow this thing rules. The lord looks suitable stroppy and he has a choice of Khornate helmet or mutant head with horns - the mutant head is especially nicely done and I expect it will turn up all over the place in conversions, regimental leaders and so on. The juggernaut is the real star, though. The goofy juggers of old are dead and the new boy looks like a walking siege engine. Awesome.

Sigvald the Magnificent
This is my favouritie miniature in the box. He's also the wussiest-looking, although he's a lord-level special character. His background has him as a permanently handsome preening scion of Slaanesh and the model reflects this perfectly, especially the face which looks like a smirking male model. His armour is elegant and his pose suggests strutting through the carnage inviting everyone to check out how cool he looks. An outstanding model - it would provide a very strong contrast to the rest of the Chaos army, though, so he might look odd stuck in a unit of armoured badasses.

In conclusion, all the models are at least OK, and everything apart from the Chosen is at least pretty good. The two mounted lords and Sigvald take it for me.

As for the book, I've looked through it but not in any depth. I certainly hope more special characters are made because some of them look really cool. I'd especially like to see the winged valkyrie of Khorne and Kholek Suneater, the big daddy of the Dragon Ogres. On another note there seems to be a lot of non-metallic metal in the colour section, especially on old-school Champion models and special characters. Once again I am left wishing I could actually do NMM.

I'd love get some pics of the Jugger and how it attaches to the base.

The Direct Only Herald that I've got was an absolute bitch to stick on the base (no contact points to speak of - not even a pin to put through the base) and I ended up needing to make my own contact points out of green stuff. Now he leans heavily to the right, and it doesn't look right.

I'm hoping that the Bloodcrushers and this new Lord (who will become a Berzerker Lord in my WE army) are better than the Herald.

The Bloodcrushers use the exact same Jugger as the Direct Only Herald, sorry H.B.M.C.

Weird that you say it didn't even have a pin/plug whatnot to stick through the base. I bought both the direct only herald and the regular crusher from the store and both (being the exact same juggernaut) had a pin i believe on the rear left leg, the one attached to the body and they stood perfectly for me. You didn't mistake it for being flash and cut it off, did you?

Hey guys. As requested pics of the Jugger and Sigvald.

No odd details on the neck of sigvald. And the Jugger does have a pin as you can see on his front left foot.

I'm slightly annoyed that my Lord on Daemonic mount doesn't have his scenic base. Will have to go into mu local GW when he's out and ask for a new one. They're usually good with replacing the whole thing and you've still got the original.

I'll post more pics of stuff at some point. But I'm out a lot with work and social so can't take pics of the whole thing en mass.

Cheers

Do all the Bloodcrushers have that pin in the same spot? Because my Herald Bloodcrusher did not. The pin I had was on one of the rear legs that didn't go straight down, so I could either have him standing on one leg (with the pin in the base), or glue the other three legs to the base with GS to hold them in place.

Why not just drill a hole in the base, and into the foot, and pin it with wire?

Excellent! Hordes was my first fantasy army a while back, and I am glad that they actually make Halberds for my Chaos Warriors now.

And now a question. I play Space Wolves in 40k, any cool heads or motifs I should try and grab for some nice Viking-ish looks?

Thanks all! And great Pics again!

The Marauder Horsemen sprue has a some bare beardy vikingy heads which look pure Space Wolf, and few other useable bits and pieces like chains and some of the weapons. The thing is, it all comes on one big, very cramped sprue so you'd be getting a lot of horses, chaosy bits, shields etc. which you wouldn't use, just for a few heads.

Now if you had a Chaos Warriors army and a Space Wolves army, you could just use the helmeted heads for the horsemen and use the bare ones for Space Wolves for some cunning cross-pollenation. Probably not worth buying the marauaders box just for the heads, though.

Or use an online bits shop. Just by the heads you want separate.
