Just checking to see what Dakka thinks of Lord of the Rings (the miniature game). This counts for both War of the Ring and the original GW SBG.

Personally, I was never really interested in it when the films were out due to LOTR fatigue, but recently it has been quite tempting and I finally picked up the moria starter box a little while ago to put it in my long term painting queue.

Check out our new, fully plastic tabletop wargame - Maelstrom's Edge, made by Dakka!

Wow, 50% not interested? Just like me... I think the models look great (at least orcs), but I don't like the rules and don't really want to start another game just to repeat what I already have.

Tired of reading new rulebooks... Just wanting to play.

Too close combat oriented for me

I really dont like it because it's too mainstream, and I never really liked LOTR anyway, the minis are ok though.

I will never play this game because of the ghastly ent figures. Those are the worst models in the history of table top wargaming.

With that being stated, I read the books once a year for the past 20 years, and I love the movies.

I was never interested in LOTR in book or movie form. If I wanted fantasy I would play WH Fantasy or D&D not Bored Of The Rings.

I love the Trilogy, but was never interested in actually playing the game. Of course I have thought about get The Battle of Five Armies set, and who knows from there.

I absolutely love the LOTR SBG. Its what got me into wargaming in the first place.

It started as a skirmish game, but over the years developed into larger scale battles (800+pts) that I found a lot more interesting and challenging.

The new game, War of the Ring, takes this much further so I have been trying it out. So far, its been fun but its too early to say if it will be as addictive.

IF I were to get LotR then I would go Easterlings. The only baddies that are both human as good at killy as the goodies!

It was the first gaming system that I tried, I enjoy the miniatures, but I just prefer models that are more customisable.

I like it, but because not many people play i get very few chances to actually play it

Not interested.

Too mainstream, played mostly by 12 year olds, and the rules (if played correctly) make it take /forever/ to kill almost anything. Especially the heroes.

It's not an army game. It's a squad scenario game.

I'm just not intrested, the book was good and movies were good, and I could see the game being good, but I really don't want to get into it unless my friends get into it (they aren't really big wargamers but they play friendly games)

My one friend swears by the card game though so maybe it's actually a cool game.

Other: I'm a big LotR fan and have a bunch of the minis, but I have not seriously entertained the though of playing the game as there is minimal local interest as far as I can tell.

I posted dont play other. Some of the models are nice and I dont want to start another system, however the biggest reason I dont play it would be that the game is trapped in a story line already written so it does not interest me.

I do what the voices in my wifes head say...

I prefer the LotR rule system to 40k's. I have the other two series that use the same rules. I have a few armies for LotR.

I like the game to a point, but it really starts to break down into 'who can roll more 6s' which starts to grind on me.

As for the models I've never liked them, there is no life to them at all.

War of the ring however I liked the system better then fantasy as they essentially take away all the stupid movement rules and you are fighting with the entire unit rather then just the 5 tards in the front (my biggest gripe with fantasy) but then that game comes down to buying a silly amount of models so it can stay where it is.

Rick Priestley said it best:
Bryan always said that if the studio ever had to mix with the manufacturing and sales part of the business it would destroy the studio. And I have to say – he wasn’t wrong there! The modern studio isn’t a studio in the same way; it isn’t a collection of artists and creatives sharing ideas and driving each other on. It’s become the promotions department of a toy company – things move on!

40k is LoTR in space, so I dont feel the need to bother with it. Frankly, the whole LoTR game franchise feels like just a giant movie tie-in that leaves little to the imagination.

LOTR made for a great series of books and a few great movies, but the first edition of the game really came down to which unkillable heroes you had.

Even if the game is better now, it still just feels WRONG to try and kill Aragorn.

Never really liked the looks of the models, and for me that's a MAJOR factor in deciding on armies/game systems.

Also i dont LoTR that much either
