Does anyone else enjoy the large Apocalypse games? I do I love having large scale games but almost every person at my local store just whines and calls it stupid. Am I the only one who enjoys them, i mean really i think its fun you can have reeactments of kursk with tanks and thats just cool and fun.

they are cool, as long as its AT MOST 3v3, and each player has at least 5,000 points. I've played 5v5 games before, where each player had like 1500 points... its boring as gak. you sit around, waiting for others to finish, and its lame.

you need to handle it like a real battle... give one player the job of holding a base, give another the mission of assaulting the enemy, and give the last guy the mission of just outright killing everything in sight.

I love Apoc.. however I only play structured games as pick-up Apoc games are generally boring

My advice for Apoc is play no more than 7k points a side and no more than 2 people on a side if you want a game that you can finish in 4 hours

I love all day, large as feth Apoc Games(look at my Gallery if you want some pics of them). The largest I've done? 10v10 with 4K for each player. The way to get larger games to run smooth is to limit the amount of wacky stuff. Not big, but wacky, ie. Pulsa Rokkits, Doomsday Devices, basically anything that has you roll for multiple units every turn. Especially Pulsa Rokkits as too many of them literally shuts down one whole team and takes 30 minutes to resolve every turn. Ask Reecius what I mean, he's a bit more vocal about that game.

In my experience Apoc games are fun if they're planned out. If it's nothing more then show up this day with X amount of points one side ends up far more powerful then the other.

The best game of Apoc that I took part in was 9000 points per side, with no super heavies. Just regular armies slugging it out with strategems.

I like my Apoc games to be on themed boards, its makes it more than just a longer game, it gives it that special kick to make it a game youll talk about for a while, and to draw more people in if done at a local shop. I once played a 6k per side game at the (sorta) local GW store. The theme was a huge Chaos invasion (2 marines, one daemon) of the planet Markoff, and the local PDF was joined by Crimson Fists SM, and a Tau Rapid Reaction Force. The map was the Capitol Building and environs, giving set objectives and special house rules. We drew a huge crowd, and 2 people started playing that night cause of what they saw. I wish i had a camera

'Waves hand' This isn't the user you are looking for.

I like apoc but the only person I know who'l play has to borrow my orks to get anywhere near how much stuff I've got so that puts a bit of a downer on it when combined with he always complains because he's got to capture objectives and not just kill everything in sight so he keeps losing even though I am rubbish and when we pack away we'v got to rememer whats alive so we can have another go later with the same army. But yes I do like big games and hope to play some against a more fun opponent.

A firm believer in yin and yang.

I'm sure there are plenty of people who enjoy these battles; personally I have never played one. Despite the fact that they take a day to play, I would love to try one at some point.

I have only played Apoc games, i have never played anything under about 3500 points. The small games seem like a waist to me. We play about 6500 per side one player per side, now thats awsome.

There is no Emperor, false or otherwise.

I prefer the smaller games to be honest. (anywhere between 1000pts and 2000pts) But Apoc is great fun if you get together and plan it. We ussually have 3-4 players per side, and we get about 1500-2000 pts each. We prefer not to use Super-Heavies (or restrict it to one per side) and we avoid taking support tsctics like orbital bombardment and such. The best thing to do is put a timer on the game, your side has 10min to move, 10 to shoot, and 10 to assualt. That way you should get a decent game in under 5 hours.

My advice to apoc gamers, never take the jammers thingy. It is the most annoying tactic one can use.

But more seriously, always think like a team. You can give certain players certain goals, or ask for them to back each other up. One of the funnest games was while my IG and sisters faced off against a horde of Chaos and were getting ripped to shreds, my friends scout discreetly moved through the woods to sieze the objective. (They had placed the objective there as sort of bait, and they saw the scouts but either didn't register them as a threat, or forgot that the objective was there)
It feels good when your plan actually works.

I've played a few games (On my basement floor, no less Yay Floorhammer!) and enjoyed it quite a bit. 'Apocalpocalypse' ( Full of Bonbaonbardlements! ), IMHO, better captures the personality of the 40K Universe, and I'd much rather play one time-consuming Apoc game than several smaller fast battles.

Double Posts are fun. And watch the language. Obscenities are Heresy on Dakka. As for your qualms about player fluctuation, that's not Apocalyse that has that problem, that's your group not locking it's games. As in: If someone leaves for more than a snack or a bathroom break, they forfeit their spot and their ex-teammates can fend for themselves. If one player leaves an Apoc game for the day, everyone puts the game on hold or that player just forfeits his spot until the game is over. As well, if people want to join, tell them they should've reserved a spot beforehand and that a team can't just 'budge' into an Apoc game, because it slows everything down considerably, and can lead to a very unfair advantage for one team.

SoCal, USA!

Apoc is great. You need a story, and not too many people or too much stuff. 2-4 vs 2-4 with 1500-2500 per player is great.

But the main thing is to have a story or theme for the battle.

Also, NO JAMMERS - the entire point is trash talk!

That and Disruptor Beacon. Disruptor Beacon(and the Chaos Formation that makes every single character a Beacon), Flank March, and Jammers were always banned at our games, unless granted by a Formation as a bonus Asset.

Oh flank march is easy to counter. If your enemy thinks that you're going to flank then they should get ambush.

Apoc is a good way to tell big chunks of an ongoing campaign. Quite a lot of fun every now and again.

It's great if you PLAN and PREPARE.

If you don't the game is either boring or frustrating.

Plan and Prepare is definitely crucial.

100% yes.

Apoc requires planning, preparation and participants willing to play the game as it is intended. Like Planetstrike, Apoc cannot be played competitively...

... actually... let me rephrase that...

Apoc (and Planetstrike) can be played competitively, but it tends to ruin the game. In Apoc it becomes about who can bring the nastiest combination combined with who can put the best models in the table (Min/Maxing Power Gaming + Wallet-Hammer) and in Planetstrike it can be about finding an unbeatable game-breaking attacker's list, or being a complete dick and making the entire table impassable terrain if you're the defender.

Apoc and Planetstrike both allow for better themed and narrative games as, as long as both sides agree to it to start with, you can set up a battle that both makes sense and doesn't have one player playing a dirty truck (or the so called 'dick move' during or even before the game).

Yes, it's more about a story than winning.

'Course if you win whilst telling a good story, then that's a bonus.

Actually some fun things have been setting up detailed stories for Apoc games and not having them turn out as planned. I organised a two-part game where a massive Daemon Prince was being summoned out of a Webway Prison using a rift in the warp, and the Eldar and Inquisitorial forces had to shut the rift before the summoning ritual could be complete.

The idea was they'd be successful and stop it... but we weren't, we couldn't close the rift, and the Daemon Prince was freed... but wounded quite badly.

So we had a second game where the rift was being used to heal the Daemon Prince. This time we did manage to win, but the Daemon Prince was healed first and made it away.

So I just wrote that into the back story of our next few big Apoc games, and it turned out great.

Sounds good, is there a link to the story somewhere?

We moreso come up with our stories as we go. Like when a humble guardsmen achieves something miraculous we laud him (not overly thouhg, k?). And when thier are interesting duels going on between epic characters we are sure to include these.
