So heres how I make quick cracked earth style bases.
1. Get green stuff and bases(a refrence photo helps)
2. Spread green stuff shallow and smooth(ish) on the base
3. I made big triangles and then broke each large shape into many smaller ones, but i guess just try and mimic the photo. I used a exacto for the lines, adding thicker ones ocasionally)
4. Prime white(i did anyway) and while i havent done it yet but i believe i'll wash it with devlen mud and dry brush a lighter brown.
5. let dry and enjoy!

I hope you'll upload some painted pics. Looks good but it is hard to tell just how effective it is until there is a good photo of a painted base. Thanks for sharing so far!

I'm going to have to thank you for this tutorial. I've begun to base my counts-as Blood Angels with this technique.

Very nice. But doesn't it get expensive to base a large force with this due to the cause of the Green Stuff?

You can buy greenstuff from gale force 9 in large quantities for little price.

Nice technique with the sculpted bases! It'll probably save you money in the long run over buying the resin bases they sell at most FLGS. I don't play Privateer Press games (yet!) but I do really like the bases. They seem a little more polished.

Might get good results using yellow/gray Mulliput, cheaper that green stuff too.
Looks good - might try this for my (eventually) forthcoming RT ork army.

What harm can it do to find out? It's a question that left bruises down the centuries, even more than "It can't hurt if I only take one" and "It's all right if you only do it standing up." Terry Pratchett, Making Money
"Can a magician kill a man by magic?" Lord Wellington asked Strange. Strange frowned. He seemed to dislike the question. "I suppose a magician might," he admitted, "but a gentleman never could." Susanna Clarke Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell

It wasnt all too expensive, i paid 17 bucks for a huge amount of GF9 green stuff and the amount needed/ as opposed to used in the pics is a drop in the bucket compared to what i have left, and i just did 4 more bases yesterday

You should put some animal bones on the bases, like a spine and ribs with a skull or something.

Try drybushing them with devlan mud or bleached bone, right now they look a bit watery and unrealistic (not very desert like)

Nice tutorial, sadly not very necessary unless you need deep fissure cracks or have more green stuff thann you know what to do with. Instead use crackle glaze over your ordinary base. This is easier, quicker, cheaper and doesnt bulk up the height of the base. You can decant it and mix it with your paint or paint over it. The thicker the layer of crackle glaze the more it cracks.
A tutorial for crackle paint
http://www.rangerink.com/tips/tips_distresscrackle.htm
" This is not the '2-part' crackle finishes that you see in hardware or craft stores, but an acrylic paint that has more of the look of 'dried or cracked earth'. "
Polyvine Crackle Glaze specifications
http://www.paint-service.co.uk/datasheets/polyvine%20crackle.pdf
You can get crackle glaze from arts shops but also much cheaper from homecare shops and in larger quantities, several different companies make the stuff. Do experiment before applying it to a near finished model , judge for yourself how much crackle glaze you need for the effect you want, the thicker the coat the bigger the cracks. A decent size pot should easily work for an entire army, and do some terrain too.
