There are lots of things motivating us to stop out current project and drift on to the next, causing a large increase in our piles of plastic, but what motivates/distracts you enough that you start a new force?

Well what mekes me start a new army is usually based around background and in-game effectiveness. If I like the way the models look and the background I can stand playing an underpowered army.

Theme is what drives all of my armies in the begining. After I have a good core which makes me happy, I will get some other stuff to make it more competitive.

I start new armys either because I am board with the armys I have or I have found a great deal for an army so I say to myself why not pick it up and try em out.

I build new armies because I tend to get bored with them. Sometimes, I'll even build 2 new ones at the same time just to get the feel for a different army.

I like to go for play style and entertainment over what's competative when picking my armies. I like to play the relatively less common armies . It's the reason I started with BA (back before the new codex) and have been trying to finish my SoB. It's going to be a pure SoB when complete so with everything but the Rhino's being metal, it's expensive!
I have already planned out my next project, Black Templars. I just love their fluff. Some fun rules an wargear. Terminators in Drop Pods, PoTMS on anything, Blessed Hull (take that Eldar!), Vows. They have the Holy Hand Grenade for crying out loud, how cool it that!

I would be the same as Dashyl there. Love going to new armies but there are certain armys I'd never get like Necrons or Eldar, but when I'm finished with an army and my wallet tells me I can get a new one, I get all excited and plan out exactly what Im gonna get.

I put new models, but it all comes down to being able to relate to the army somehow. I like my Marines because of the warrior brotherhood aspect, my Chaos Marines because who hasn't wanted to rule the universe at some point and my Orks because their just plain fun to play (my Big Mek with Shokk Attack Gun always brings huge laughs whenever I use him).

The majority of models in the army AND the fluff appeal to me.
Only this.
If it's only certain models, then I MAY buy them purely because I like the look of them, but I won't start the army.
This is the main reason I collect the armies I do. I don't like enough of the models OR the backgounds of the other ones.

Hi Dakka Dakka!
I have this bad habit of fluctuating, switching back and forth between moods of cynicism and faith. Always wanting an army to suit my mindset, I am in a never ending cycle of swapping, trading, selling, buying...
Though, I did just see the Knights of Blood in the Blood Angels fluff...maybe a non-chaos renegade Space Marine chapter would be a happy middle ground.... (considers buying Space Marines....)
Thanks for an interesting question!

Might I hazard a guess that the lack of a "Emperor bless and cherish you" closer means you're swinging more towards "cynicism" today?
I'm the same way, though. Some days I love nothing more than to play my faithful Deathwatch marines, and smite the foul Xeno.
Some days, I love playing my Orks, and crumpin' some 'umies.
Then some days I like playing my Daemons, and playing my part in the imperceptible, immortal schemes of Tzeentch.
It all depends on my mood!

It's interesting that planning in advance was an option, because I definitely do that. That and I have to like the fluff a lot to play an army. Actual combat effectiveness is tertiary, if applicable at all.

I usually get a new army when my current ones meet a challenge they are incapable of beating.
example: I got space marines when my tyranids incountered a tank and flamer based army. after 6 games against him, I still lost, using different strategies each time, so I got marines to counter the weakness Automatically Appended Next Post: I usually get a new army when my current ones meet a challenge they are incapable of beating.

After carefully thinking about this I realized we all should of answered "when a new codex comes out" or "When new models are out" so that GW would start to do one or both more often...
But usually, yeah, I decide what I want to compliment my competitive game or something that fits a funny fluff idea I have or I really like the models of. (A.K.A. I plan it in advance.)

“Well, what do you carry the gun for if you’re just going to waste bullets?” Timer reloads his Boomer as Forling fires his Shrapper.
“I may ‘ne be a good shot Timer, but I don’t miss much from this close up with my hammer,” Forling continues to fire.
“All the enemies are good and far away so what the hell does that…” Timer looks up to see Forling giving him an angry stare. “Oh, yea, ok, um, good shooting.”
