A long time ago Dakkaites were kicking around ideas for silly armies, 1 of them was the Guard Mortar Company.  With the idea being that your shooting phase would be about 45 minutes long.  Well I've been kicking the idea around for a while and Thanks to army builder this is what I've come up with.

Command Platoon @ 226 Pts
   Junior Officer:CCW; Laspistol
4 Guardsmen: Grenade Launcher (x2); Mortar
   Mortar Squad @ [80] Pts
     Mortar (x3)
   Mortar Squad @ [80] Pts
     Mortar (x3)

Infantry Platoon @ 222 Pts
   Command Squad @ [66] Pts
      Junior Officer: CCW; Laspistol
4 Guardsmen: Grenade Launcher (x2); Mortar
   Infantry Squad: Grenade Launcher; Mortar
   Infantry Squad: Grenade Launcher; Mortar

Total: 1810
So what should I add to make it 1850?  What would make it a viable army list w/o removing all of the mortars?

Thanks for the help!

That is the funniest list I have ever seen! Now with that many morters you should destroy pretty much any ork army, and any other troop heavy guard will have problems.

While the all morters is a fun concept maybe you could switch out the heavey mortor teams for bassies, which would keep up the indirect theme but also have something worth firing at power armor.

I dunno, 46 mortars .....  Thats as many str 4 shots as most marine armies have bolters and with 48" range, blast,  & no LOS.

Clear the battlefield and let me see

Yea I agree about trying to get a Basilisk or two. Also, I'd lose the grenade launchers to get iron discipline on all the officers and stick a standard in the command hq. That should still leave you with loads of points spare to help you on the way to Basilisks.

IF your local guys would allow the use of Imperial Armor stuff, have you also considered maybe some Griffons or Bombards?

take out the mortars!!

you need anti-armor!
switch 1-3 of your hvy weapon platoon squads to lascannons at least.
get some plasma.

where's HBMC when you need him!

Umm... yeah, the easiest way to make this army not suck is to remove the Mortars.

Interestingly though, an army with nothing but Mortars can work simply because it puts the statistical probability of scoring hits a bit more in your favour.

It still sucks though...

Uhh...I don't care how many templates you put down, demolisher armor will not crack under 46 mortar shells.

Funny list though.

Sweet, another person who has an unusual fascination with mortars. Though I don't play guard, I agree with the other posters, add a Basilisk to keep with your theme and provide some anti-tank power, two is good, but maybe a Leman Russ, it's a guard army after all.

There is a chapter approved option that lets you take an Imperial High Commander. If you take him and 3 other sub officers - you can re-roll all those scatter dice.

I would put lascannons in the line squads and as many plasma guns points permitting. You do need anti-tank.  Id drop the grenade launchers from all the command squads.  Make one a suicide drop squad with meltas.

The shooting is nice with mortars now - you dont have to measure, only to check to see if your guess is in range.

Plasma over Grenade Launchers will slightly reduce the sux. Grenade launchers are a silly weapon all on their own - no need to combine with mortars to make a difficult army! Wouldn't bother with much else in the command squads than the mortar. (for theme's sake) Griffon Heavy Mortars are actually kind of cool - IG whirlwinds for most intents and purposes, and fluff well with the army if you own Imperial Armour. The army isn't a complete wash if you do paint it and hate it, as all you'd have to do is buy a gajillion lascannon to have a completely orthodox IG army. If you find a few points after dinking all the grenade launchers and giving all the infantry squads a plasma gun each, 25 points and a doctrine can get you Close Order Drill and an Honorifica on one of your platoon HQ squads for an extra two points of leadership, depending on the number of fluff lawyers in your area. (Whether Officers benefit from COD is subject to controversy in some circles.) Suicide Drop veterans with plasma or melta guns and/or Rough Riders are some ideas in terms of fig leafs for the list's vulnerabilities against MEQs and tanks.
Echoing everyone else though, in the absence of some strange environments in your area, this list will give you a hard time, though it could be funny to take to a tourney. With a pile of luck on your side in terms of drawing opponents, you could beat some very good players. (lil' bugs, IG and DE leap to mind.)

When soldiers think, it's called routing.

This is a pretty rough tweak as I'm not 100% on points for IG but I'd drop the third infantry platoon and add a sqaud each to the other two. I'd then give the two infantry command squads 4x meltaguns. Combine'ed with drop troops you'd then have a fair amount of antitank. If you do lose a HS heavy weapon team for a bassie or griffon, I'd use the points to add a few lascannon infantry squads or a vet squad or 2 with melta-guns (as well as the afore mentioned PGs for gernade launchers).

I'm not the biggest fan of mortars, though their concept is nice for a squad, they simply lack in power.
