The first full-colour picture from the new James Webb Space Telescope has been released - and it doesn't disappoint.

The image is said to be the deepest, most detailed infrared view of the Universe to date, containing the light from galaxies that has taken many billions of years to reach us.

US President Joe Biden was shown the image during a White House briefing.

Further debut pictures from James Webb are due to be released by Nasa in a global presentation on Tuesday.

"These images are going to remind the world that America can do big things, and remind the American people - especially our children - that there's nothing beyond our capacity," President Biden remarked.

"We can see possibilities no-one has ever seen before. We can go places no-one has ever gone before."

Lies and CGI. The universe is not billions of years old, and I wish we'd stop spending taxpayer money on fake atheist "science". But I guess this forum's ban on religion only applies to Christians.

No, the forum's ban on religion applies to religion.

Let's keep the discussion here to the science, please.

Feel free to enjoy 10th century lifestyle, child mortality and lifespan, and I’ll guess you’ll be turning off and returning the electronic device that you made your post with.

Science funding allows western civilisation to function giving us all time to argue over toy soldiers, rather than working 18 hours a day to scrape together enough food, and hope that we don’t die of toothache.

Fundamental physics and astronomy research allow advanced that make a real difference to our lives due to setting the basis for advanced technology. It’s also been proven to be the best return on investment ever, it’s just that at the point of investment, the precise form of the return cannot be predicted.

On topic, the pictures are already looking awesome. I’m looking forward to people susbstwmtially more clever than I am explaining why the reddest bits are in arcs

And yea awesome picture. To think those are galaxies(not stars)...space is mind bogglingly huge.

It took 12 and a half hours to generate the pic, so I'm assuming those are stars that moved relative to the rest of the frame during that time.

I thought it might be more like gravitational lensing. The reddest stuff is the furthest away and therefore moving away from us the fastest.

I saw in the report that Hubble took days or weeks to get less good imagery, so really excited for what will come out of this beastie. Direct observation of exoplanets would just blow my tiny mind

Lies and CGI is a good name for a punk song though.

I saw this on twitter which is the difference between a shot of the same area by the new one and the old Hubble. As Flinty says, the new telescope uses a gravitational lens, I believe the actual furthest objects are the ones that are wiggly.

Yeah, the curviness is the gravitational lending of the distant objects around the galaxy cluster in the middle.

Why is there stretched out red galaxies? Thats called gravitational lensing.
The distant galaxy cluster warps the visual field behind it, making the galaxies more distant than it and behind them, to appear in doubles and stretched out.

It’s one of those odd effects that was predicted by relativity theory and proven through observations like those provided here.

I think the weirdest thing about it is that it _isn't_ mind blowing.

Redshifting and curved look to it (both from the lensing, I assume) aside, it looks basically like posters, album and book covers from childhood. Basically what I imagined the universe was supposed to look like as a child, without all the atmospheric and light pollution.

Efficiency is the highest virtue.

Weird to think about how far back in time it is. In a sense this picture was 'taken' before life on Earth existed.

Pretty certain that was all practical effects, not CGI. BBC in the 1980s was infamous for it's low-budget effects.

Follow up pictures were pretty damn good as well. Seems they are taking up comparison shots with Hubble first. Wonder when they publish something they haven't photoed with Hubble before?

Well interesting photos. The size of dust clouds where stars are forming up are pretty darn huge when you start thinking about distances involved O_o

But of course all fake and CGI right?

I guess if you haven't spent time studying astronomy, this makes sense. But I did, 6 years in Uni and even though I didn't enter that field, I have sat fascinated by this for the last few days. The sharpness and clarity has been an endless source of amusement for me, just looking and comparing to the HUDF, I can see these galaxies so much more clearly. There are things in this photo that are crystal clear, showing galactic structure that look like blob specs in the HUDF.

Can't believe the engineering behind this thing. Apparently the mirrors had to be so perfectly inline, a NASA spokesman said that if the mirror array was the size of the US, each segment would be the size of Texas and the whole thing would have to be perfectly flat to within 1.5 inches.

Pretty staggering when you consider that this thing is 4x further away from us than the Moon. If it goes wrong, that's it. No maintenance, no repair mission, that's it.

Yup! It's incredible! What I cannot wait for is to see what new technologies end up being created in an effort to coax more data out of the telescope. Ingenuity is incredible.
