From Variety

A Spider-Man Noir live-action series is in the works at Amazon, Variety has learned exclusively.

The untitled series will follow an older, grizzled superhero in 1930s New York City. An individual with knowledge of the project says that the show will be set in its own universe and the main character will not be Peter Parker.

My first instinct was "fething no chance" but Variety aren't any old listicle site desperate for clicks.

Still, the alchemy of Sony agreeing to let Amazon play with their toys and Disney not throwing a tantrum stretches credulity.

Disney can throw all the tantrums they like. Sony owns the rights to Spider-Man.

They do, but unquestionably the most financially successful Spider Man outings have been the ones that have had heavy Disney/Marvel Studios involvement.

If Disney weren't happy about this, they'd certainly be in a position to withdraw from a partnership that Sony arguably needs more than they do.

It’s a Spider-verse thing with a not-Parker, which isn’t what Disney has been doing so it makes sense to me.

From the previously linked story from Variety:

This is the second known project based on the Sony-controlled Marvel characters at Amazon Prime Video and MGM+. It was previously announced that Amazon was moving forward with the series “Silk: Spider Society” from showrunner Angela Kang, with several other shows in the works.

I'm not sure that addresses my surprise that these studios are working together in any way really, does it? Just back dates it slightly.

It's an odd move. But maybe Sony thinks they can make more money having other people take the risk on project success and just getting paid for renting the rights than continuing to produce their own crap projects.

They need to prove to their share holders that spiderman UP is worth holding onto instead of selling back for an insane sum I am sure Disney would be willing to pay.

These are my opinions. This is how I feel. Others may feel differently. This needs to be stated for some reason.

They don't need to.

Sony Pictures Television is the studio (formerly Columbia Tristar and just Columbia Pictures Television before that). Amazon is the platform.

They've been putting shows on different channels and platforms for decades, including several on Amazon before- they're behind Wheel of Time and The Boys, for example. They're even involved with the upcoming Goosebumps show on Disney+, for maximum cross-pollination

More than slightly, as it was first reported in late 2020.

Honestly if you look at the list of highest grossing films, Spidy (and venom) is a vast chunk of them. Out of the top 10, 5 are spiderman films. Whilst Disney would likely pay a fortune, at the same time I can't see good justification for Sony when Spiderman is almost their film bread-and-butter earner

It's a good job you catch everything so it doesn't go over your head, isn't it?

It's true, but SOny is a much bigger company than the movies it produces and Sony which is also into video games and technology ultimately answers to their parents in Japan. Even if Venom made some money, Morbius lost it. And now they are gambling on a Spider Woman (Madame Webb), a Kraven, and a El Muerto. It's not as simple a question of if the movies made money, or the most money Sony movies had ever made. It's if they cannot perform up to the scale that they should be Sony Japan might just shutter Sony movies all together. Why keep investing in this whole branch of product when it barely pays for its own existence.

Sony's strategy seems to be "Let them fight!" when it comes to streaming.

They've been signing on with people who have streaming service and selling their stuff to these services, as they have no desire to set up their own.

Hell, not having a streaming service was one of the key factors in Legendary Entertaining jumping ship from WB to Sony.

We have a potential lead for the series:

REPORT: Nicolas Cage in Talks to Star in Spider-Man Noir Series - CBR.com

Nicolas Cage may be reprising his role as Spider-Man Noir in a live-action TV series.

The Ankler has reported on the status of multiple live-action co-productions from Marvel and Sony in the works at Amazon. This included an update on Spider-Man Noir, and it was reported that "Nicolas Cage is in serious talks to take on the lead role in the series, which will be set in 1930s New York City." Also stated was that Sony declined to comment on the report.

Nicolas Cage voiced Spider-Man Noir in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.

OK, I’m open to that.

I wouldn’t say no to it being slightly tongue in cheek either.

It's Nicolas Cage. I don't believe he knows how to act any other way

I'm a fan of the Shadow and have long wanted a new version, I even like the Baldwin version.

This is about as close as we're likely to get for a while.

So I'm in.

No way this is successful.

I recently went back and re-watched some of the amped up noir style films of the Frank Miller variety, and they just do not work anymore.

If they ape this style, it is doomed.... DOOMED!

Of course, they might not ape that style.

But what if they style that ape?
He could have a live-in orangutan butler. That still works, right?
