Well Godzilla has always been fabulous...

Amidst the mists and coldest frosts he thrusts his fists against the posts and still insists he sees the ghosts.

There is a very famous book called The Coming Race about a guy who ends up in what amounts to the hollow earth and is guided through a civilization of "angel like" people who are technologically advanced through the use of a liquid substance they call "Vril". They are a antediluvian race of humans who have survived underground and the vril is used to do all kinds of gak including healing and destorying and act as feul for machines... whatever. Basically magic super liquid can do anything.

There is a shot in that trailer of weird giant temple with pale weird human walking up the steps surrounded by pinkish lights. = Vril society maybe?

Why is Godzilla pink? Vril enhanced?

In the trailer Kong goes down a crevasse, and there are pinky-purple crystals that seem to interact with his ax. Later we see Godzilla hibernating around the same type of crystal (feeding on it as a source of radiation???). I think the pink crystals are changing Godzilla in the same way the nuke blast did in KotM, just in a better, more controlled way.

Also, does Kong now have a Power Fist?

The last time Godzilla changed color like that was when he absorbed the life energy of Rodan.

Oh no! Has anyone checked up on Rodan recently?

I haven't thought of that book in a long time; I forgot all about it.

I honestly think about Vril all the damn time. Fantasy world uses magic... Vril. Mana stored in some kind of potion or whatever... Vril. Bizarre white city in a Conan book where ancient human like people keep slaves and live in luxury because of advanced magic/technology.... Vril. It's like thinking of Lovecraft when discussing horror. Every time there is ancient secluded powerful civilization or magic phlebotinum I can see Vril in it's roots.

Godzilla is definitely getting powered up via whatever ancient civilization we using using the pink energy. I don't think it'll be at all related to the 2000'ish pink power up it references. Looks sharp though, I'm game, but its also like just a Super Saiyan Blue kinda thing.

This trailer honestly does nothing for me. I'm excited for it simply because the Monsterverse has been churning out some great kaiju brawls, but everything in this trailer feels kinda... small? Just not feeling it from this one, but hoping it lives up to the last few.

"Kong can't stop this on his own."

"He won't be alone."

Terrible writing in the movie, but so, so good for the trailer.

A godzilla guy on YouTube (BigActionBill) pointed out that the Legendary films are progressing as the older films did. You start with the serious then move on to monster fights, but still somewhat serious, and now we are onto the flying rodent gak crazy phase of the 70's Godzilla films. He is expecting (jokingly) a cameo or post credit scene with Jet Jaguar.

No Super Bowl trailer for Godzilla x Kong, but they have confirmed via Twitter (X is a name I refuse to use) coming this Wednesday the 14th.

Does Kong need a powerfist? No. Will I enjoy watching Kong beat the stuffing out of things with said powerfist? Yes.

Silly and over the top, but that’s kinda why I’m here watching giant monster movies...

Were there no screenings for this? I hadn't seen a single review until this morning and thus far I haven't seen anything kind. Overall, I'm curious what people think on this one. I loved the last but haven't been feeling this one.

I’ve already seen a couple reviews that were essentially “it’s not good but it is fun”. From comments, it has the silly feel of a Showa era Godzilla film. And Kong apparently steals the show.

My read is reviewers and critics all prefer Godzilla -1 types of serious movies, and this is not only a fun, unserious genre movie but it also has the shadow of -1 over it.

I hope to see it this weekend.

That has been the impression I have been getting since Godzilla V Kong. These started at least semi serious with Godzilla and Kong Skull Island. It managed to stay semi serious in King of the Monsters even though they were just chucking in all the Showa era stuff into it. The serious pretense was basically dropped by Godzilla V Kong and now we have this romp of a movie coming out. Legendary has been paying homage to the Godzilla franchise by moving through it. And here we are at the goofy gak.

Edit: I ALSO prefer the more serious ones and wish it would have stayed that way. But whatever. Il take a dumb fun one.

It felt like a late stage Marvel film and I did not enjoy it.
The first Godzilla Legendary did was (barring the human sideplot) really good but its clear that this is just now another exercise in merchandising and that sucks.

What I liked: The action was shot in daylight and you could actually see what was happening. The fight scenes were actually pretty good. I liked that there were a number of good laughs in it as well.

What I didn't like: yeah, the plot was a bit weak. It somehow felt both rushed, and dragged out at the same time, which is something I've never experienced from a movie before. The monster Shimo really could have been fleshed out more.

The human subplot of that film is almost the entire runtime

Some of the commercials for the film definitely had the Shōwa era vibes that some may like and not the Heisei/Millenium eras that the earlier Legendary films seem to emulate.

Saw it last night. Was fun.

Godzilla is a horrible monster and gets multiple fight scenes. I wish they were longer.

Kong is the empathetic human like one and "hero character".

Human chatacters are often not as bad as previous entries.

Monarch seems to be a hole where money is thrown so that humanity can tell people 5 minutes before godzilla makes landfall and starts smashing everything.

The trailers had that line about "both being scared of something" but luckily that isn't in the movie and Godzilla is still constantly in beast mode*.

It was a lot of fun and we are definitely in the Showa era outlandishness. I always prefer the more serious ones but I still enjoy the Godzilla vs Megalon types as well.

There were a lot of unnecessary bits that could have been easily clipped and had the movie move at a brisker pace without sacrificing anything. We didn't need to see the trip through the gravity barrier or the guy being eaten by a tree. Having the team head out to the vehicle with the goofy veterinarian and then cutting to Kong and the ship coming out into the Hollow Earth would've done the exact same thing but in less time.

Spoiler:
I laughed out loud when Kong used the little ape as a club.

*Except when his girlfriend tells him to calm down, of course.

Godzilla X Kong is almost as dumb as Final Wars and yet not quite as clever as Final Wars.

It was a fun, silly movie that somehow didn’t feel annoying or insulting. I think it’s because it did the fights well, with pay offs and crowd pleasing moments, and because everything else in the film was just there to set up the fights, set up some stakes or add comic relief. The mother and daughter plot hit just hard enough not to feel like a waste of time. I also liked that Kong won not by being stronger, but by being kinder to the weak. And also by tagging in Godzilla.

I kinda wish Godzilla wasn’t in this. I think it could have worked better as a pure Kong movie.

So yesterday I went to see "Godzilla x Kong: The Frozen 3 Empire" (or whatever its title was). There were 5 other people in the audience: apparently it's doing OK worldwide, but here interest was non-existent.

And I don't really wonder why. Now, the first half of the movie wasn't too bad actually, there was nice build-up and it felt better than Godzilla vs Kong. I'll use spoiler tags for the rest just in case:

Spoiler:

-human characters were basically narrators, and provide some weak humour. Except Jia, who was now made into Messiah figure for some reason.Thankfully there was less human drama around than in previous movies, but also characters were pretty blah.

-half-way through, the plot which has been building nicely gets rushing. Godzilla jumps from scene to scene like a kangaroo, which lessens his impact.

-Kong is pretty good and expressive in this movie, but maybe just tad too much of a weakling. Does he really need that much assistance from humans? Who's exactly protecting whom?

-Kong trying to 'negotiate' with Godzilla was pretty dumb moment.

-Skar King is pretty good antagonist - agile and smart Kaiju, not just big and strong. However, he could have been more effective in actual combat. Also given how Godzilla was supposedly alarmed by Skar King's rise, they don't interact nearly enough - they fight against each other for just few seconds.

-biggest problem of the movie is how way too many elements it throws at the viewer in third act. Return of Mothra, Kong's Power Fist and magically disappearing injury, Iwi anti-gravitic pyramid thingie, Jia somehow being only one who can activate the whatever, attack of the weird horny birds...all of these were completely unnecessary. What this movie needed was Godzilla and Kong tag-teaming Skar and his cronies for ten epic minutes. That's all.

Overall it was same level as previous one, but that is not very high bar to cross. It had maybe bit better looking action, and I liked how none of the scenes really dragged on forever, but it was not well structured or written movie overall.
