When you plan, build, paint or play with your armies, do you like to listen to music while doing it?

Or do you find music distracting?

If you do listen to music, what do listen to?

I tend to listen to movie soundtracks that remind me of the miniatures. Sometimes I’ll listen to history podcasts or gaming reviews. I need to have some form of audio stimulation while I sit for three minutes holding two fiddly pieces together until the fething glue sets.

I'll usually put on a Youtube video or perhaps a TV show, one that doesn't require me to engage much (like something I've seen before). Background noise is less distracting than complete silence, somehow.

My armies (re-counted and updated on 11/7/24, including modeled wargear options):
Dark Angels: ~16000 Astra Militarum: ~1200 | Imperial Knights: ~2300 | Leagues of Votann: ~1300 | Tyranids: ~3400 | Stormcast Eternals: ~5000 | Kruleboyz: ~3500 | Lumineth Realm-Lords: ~700

Youtube with a history informational documentary. SOmething I can listen to.

Or Netflix/streaming service with a movie or TV show I have seen before so I can flick my eyes to it every now and then.

Tonight I'm off to FLGS for 3 hours of painting and will start with a 30 min video on youtube about the US army procurement of the AMPV, then will likely be a movie on Netflix or Amazon.

Usually when I'm building/painting at home I've got something from Netflix/Prime/D+ playing.
Or sometimes just the radio.

Prime is geeat for this as there's all kinds of history docs/series (all subjects, not just WWII ) where I can listen more vs actually watching.
Also stupid crap like Ancient Aliens- though a little bit of that goes along way....

If I'm building something at the shop?
One shop has the owners Playlists going. The other? No music, but there's plenty of background noise from gaming & whatever conversations going on around the "hobby table".

Good thread! Most of the time I'll put something on in the background. I prefer film scores (Star Wars, Star Trek, LOTR, Jurassic Park, etc) or some game soundtracks (e.g. the first Space Marine is great and I quite like the Dragon Age: Inquisition soundtrack).

So stuff that fits the mood of what I'm working on, but generally doesn't have words (the only real exception is the War of the Worlds musical). I've tried listening to podcasts, but realise I end up not taking it in very well if I'm concentrating on hobbying.

I like to listen to EDM music if it is just me.

However, usually there are other people round so I listen to whatever they are doing. Lately, it has been a lot of Holiday themed movies of the Hallmark/Lifetime variety!

Just music. If I try to watch stuff I get distracted. Never got into listening to podcasts.

Often the radio. Local independent alternative station. (102.7 EQX out of Vermont, they stream if you are out of range). Especially sunday mornings when they do their retro-rewind, I try to take that time to clean mold lines and build.

Other times I’m put an artist on repeat. Depeche Mode and Rush are my go-tos, but sometimes I like to listen to the catalog of someone I’ve like a song I heard on the radio. Metric is currently queued up, who I’m enjoying.

I put an album on Tidal and when it runs out I put on another. What I put on depends on what Id be into at any given day, I have quite an eclectic taste, mostly into "that terrible dunce music" tho

What are your EDM recommendations?

I love music that takes me back to the clerb.

(I’m a sucker for Real McCoy, Daft Punk, etc.)

I prefer to hobby in gaunt silence. The better to contemplate what Graham McNeil did to the Cardinal Boras. I haven't forgotten, Graham! I'll never forget!

For me it varies. Sometimes I want to have my flow and paint-meditation in silence, sometimes I want to get double use of my time with some educational videos (pop-science podcasts or university lectures, like Sapolsky's from Stanford), sometimes music.

If it is music, it's, as befits a fantasy and wargaming nerd, metal of course.

While painting, I tend to have youtube videos on, usually something I can learn something from. It's always nice to pick up some more knowledge and it helps me get in the flow.

Either music, movies, or random videos.

Several paint schemes have been born by listening to the same song on repeat for way longer than is healthy.

I like to listen to audiobooks or battle reports, is mostly about having something in the background that isn't too interesting/distracting but also not too boring.

Oh, yes, I listen to music when I paint. Grab the next CD off the rack and toss it into the CD player and get to it. Lots of British Metal, lots of '70s and '80s rock (and it really depresses me that this is the music being played on the local oldies station), and some outliers like Wierd Al, J.D. Blackfoot, and Aphroditie's Child.

I put on sports in the background, depending on the season itll be baseball or golf. Something I don't REALLY need to pay attention to but can follow easily & look up at if something cool happens. I use it more as white noise to help with getting into the "zen" of painting.

I tried battle reports but found I was paying TOO much attention to what was going on. Then I just end up watching the report and my brush dries...

I don't care for battle reports as I get to play plenty of games Thur-Sunday. And overhear even more.
I use M-W to watch some TV/Prime/Ntflix/D+ while I build (and sometimes paint) stuff.

I tend to have the telly on. I’m not one to work in silence as it breaks my concentration. Blame it on years of working in busy officials, where silence is ominous and creepy.
