Greetings one and all. I've been itching to start a new Flames of War army for a while now and have finally had enough time to make a start on things. As I already have an Allied force (Brits), I thought I'd go for a German force, and in an attempt to push my painting skills a bit would go for the camo-heavy SS. Choosing which list to go for was a very simple matter as I love the sturmtiger models and only one non-PDF list exists for them, and that is the IV SS Panzerkorps list in the River of Heroes book. Rumour has it that infantry costs will be changing in the near future for SS, so I wont post the list right now as it needs to be a bit flexible to cope with those changes, and I'll be saving the bulk of the infantry until last thing for the same reason.

Going back to the Brits I painted up before for a moment, I thought I'd show the only new thing I've done for them here to avoid resurrecting the thread for such a small thing. It is an ammo dump objective which I picked up from maelstrom games after the dakka meetup at Warhammer World a while back. Anyway, here is the finished model:

I'm not very fond of the colour of the wood for the crates and need to experiment a bit more to get something more natural looking. The wet mud (dark brown + gloss varnish) came out nicely though. It is also a bit wet looking around the footprints but it did not show in the photo too clearly.

Anyway after that brief diversion, on to the SS. I'm loosely basing them on August 1944 Totenkopf, but only very loosely (basically using them for reference pics, but not organisational structure or anything like that). Here is the pile of stuff and assembled vehicles ready for priming:

And the (pre-touchups) primed vehicles:

I accidentally double primed (black then dark yellow) as I did not realise the dark yellow spray I had (official flames of war one) was also a full on primer. I got away with it on everything except the half tracks which have had some detail in the guns and wheels filled by paint. I'm hoping very light coats while painting them can let me get away with it, but since they are fairly boring models anyway I'm not that upset by it and will just chalk it up to a learning experience.

Missing from the above photos are the two sturmtigers which I completed ages ago as test pieces for the army. You may notice that there is no camo as I have painted them to represent the fresh-from-the-factory models that were in use at that time on the edge of warsaw. I have performed absolute minimal weathering on them for the same reason (sculpted damage notwithstanding):

The very first model I painted after the sturmtigers was this PaK40:

It is my first ever attempt at using an airbrush and it turned out fairly well I think. The white kill rings on the barrel were very tough to paint at that scale too. The gun still needs a crew and basing, but it is the first unit I am working on so a finished picture should appear sooner rather than later.

Next I worked on the truck for the Anti Tank gun which uses an Opel Blitz 1 piece resin model. The multiple piece models look a lot nicer and I would have used one but did not see them at time of purchase and was feeling impatient This vehicle has no camo either as all the reference pictures from that region and era that I found showed it without camo or markings (and I thought it would provide some additional contrast to the other vehicles which will all be airbrushed when they are complete).

The license plate is from Dom's Decals and looks very nice Here is a picture of the vehicle next to a €2 coin for scale:

And that is all I have to show for now. Next update will come in many many moons as I am not a fast painter. The next things I am planning on painting are the Kubelwagon for the Anti Tank gun command squad and the Tiger tank that is obligatory in all German WW2 armies! Thanks for reading.

Scale is 1:100 (15mm). Here's a scale reference pic I took ages ago comparing Epic, 40k and Flames of War:

Excellent! Always great to see another Flames of War plog on here, and like Silver I was very impressed by your Guards plog and am very much looking forward to this one.

There was just one thing that was nagging me, and it's the Brummbar. Something doesn't look quite right with the gun, did you put it on upside down? There seems to be a strange gap between the gun and the mounting.

Nice to see the famous Legoburner out in the wild!

I think your tanks are begging for a few watered sienna ink oil streaks, and then a dusting with pale beige weathering powder around the tracks and bottoms, looking great so far!

I've been a busy bee playing around with the airbrush and am pleased with my efforts considering it is only my second ever attempt beyond base coating. Have to say that airbrushing is much more fun than I thought it would be and is much more entertaining that simply painting with a brush.

I've made a start on the tiger tank that will be in the force (not pictured yet) and have completed the kubelwagen transport for the anti-tank gun HQ. Next I'll be painting the first set of infantry (currently cleaned and based) in the form of the anti-tank gun HQ and crew. Camo at 15mm scale is going to be verrrry interesting to try.

Here is the completed kubelwagen. For scale, it is about 1.75cm tall and 4cm long so I'm putting faith in the relatively giant pictures not making it look horrific

For historical reference, learn more about the kubewagen (basically the German equivalent of the US Jeep) here at wikipedia

Nice stuff I'm looking forward to seeing those tanks done, very interesting Vid on the SturmTiger too, I never knew it was a rocket propelled projectile. That spray is interesting too, as I will get another batch of Germans to paint up soon and it would save me spray undercoating them black and then tank brushing them middlestone twice...

I just posted some pics of some less lovingly paint late German stuff, see what you think.

I've made some progress and have now finished the anti-tank platoon (just 1 pak40 in it though). Here is the command team:

My first attempt at camouflage at this scale. I tried oak leaf (both versions) and pea dot. Both look great in real life but my photos have bleached them out, and also they lose a lot of impact at this giant scale, considering they are only about 1.5cm tall in real life!

Here is the completed, based pak40 with crew:

And finally a photo of the entire platoon together at last:

Thanks for reading! My tiger tank is almost complete so that will be next, and then I'll probably start the anti-aircraft stuff.

The camo looks good and you have succeeded in making the figures stand out from bases, which is a common mistake when camo is used on figs.

Have you painted the camo on the gun with airbrush? It looks nice and subtle.

Excellent work, cannot wait for your take on the big cat.

Metsuri, yup it is airbrushed. All vehicle camo will be soft-edge 3 colour airbrushed on this army.

Luna, my grass is done as follows:
1. Glue down 2mm summer flock
2. While glue is wet, get 2mm autumn flock and rub it into the summer flock to give a variation in colour and use static to stand it up a bit
3. Use silfor/mininatur 2 tone tufts on the edges of the grass to make it even more pronounced and add some additional variation.

On the artillery base I also used some tiny flowers from a model railway shop. They have quite a bright green flock base which is a bit annoying and usually I'll tone that down with some darker flock, but it does look like a different type of plant and it fit the base well enough so I left it in this instance.

Great Job Lego, I love painting 15mm personally so I am always happy to see people post stuff like this.

Listen, my children, as I pass onto you the truth behind Willy Wonka and his factory. For every wonka bar ever created in existance, Mr. Wonka sacraficed a single Oompa Loompa to the god of chocolate, Hearshys. Then, he drank the blood of the fallen orange men because he fed them a constant supply of sugary chocolate so they all became diabetic and had creamy, sweet-tasting blood that willy could put into each and every Wonka bar. That is the REAL story behind willy wonka's Slaughter House!

Excellent detailling, especially on the infantry. That Pac does look lonely by himself though, might need a few friends

I've just had a bunch more stuff dropped off for me to do, some shermans as well as German stuff, I have ordered that Yellow primer too. I'll post up the pics of my 'souless painted for money' stuff if you like.

Always enjoy seeing more stuff Randy so please do share

As alluded to earlier in the week in another thread, the Tiger is now complete:

As with all flames of war tanks I've painted, the turret is fully magnetised:

Might be quite a while before the next update as I am working through the infantry for the army now. There are loads of models to clean, base and paint (with camo) so will take quite some time. I've also masked off the Quad AA guns ready for spraying:

Fine I'll get some pics done
I've just finished some Shermans but I am STILL waiting for Primer off an eBay retailer to do the German stuff.
/Threadjack.

Your stuff is looking great, you get a really nice look to the camo with the spray gun. Have you ever thought about a thin black wash all over on your tanks, it really helps the detail pop and is pretty minimal effort. I just dry/over brush the basecoat back on once the ink has dried. There is some reall nice texture on those Panzers and this is a very easy way to capitalise on that.

Just a thought and I recognise you've done a fair few and will want them to look consistant.

With hindsight I should probably have used a devlan mud wash like I do on darker tanks. I used a sepia wash which looks good in real life, but gets bleached out by the camera flash. The brown camouflage also matches the sepia a bit too closely so those areas lose most of the shading effect that would otherwise be gained. As you guessed, I've done too many like this now to want to go back and update, and they do look a bit more shaded without camera flash bleaching so I'm not too concerned. Thanks for the hints anyway.

Looking great as always, infantry do take a while longer to do, but if you post some when you are done and then some completed to date pictures, it keeps you motivated to finish the rest of the platoon ;-)

Thanks chaps. I've almost finished the sturmtiger objective, so will post a picture of that soon. Just got some replacement halftracks as well as I decided the primer paint was on too thick on the ones I had undercoated previously, so instead of stripping for ages, just got some new ones for now and the others can go in the bits box for a future project.

I've been throwing together some T-34/85s at the moment just as a minor diversion before I start the mass of infantry too.
