I was getting a little tired of painting grey marines and terminators so I had a look through the FW Horus Heresy books and thought on working on Iron Warriors I know there are more books to arrive and what way than doing my fave Chaos marines than showing them as a Pre- Heresy option.

Really nice tarnished metal look... the armour looks solid and ancient and looks like it has a real depth of texture.... Iron Warriors certainly got a lot of room to play with the armour designs etc...

Did you ever consider lining in some of the deeper shadows on the metal plates Dee? Might help them pop a bit more. You paint in a rather thick black wash in the deepest crevices and creases between plates. Nice effect when you have a lot of "acreage" painted in the same color, especially when it's metallic.

I would 2nd gits' comment, maybe Vallejo smoke?

As an Iron Warrior fan I can't not say these are looking pretty good and what I really like are the bases. I don't know if you will be leaving them black but as they are, it looks like the Iron Warriors are fighting through char and ash which seems very Iron Warrior-y to me.

The bases will stay black.

And the best way to use the smoke is ????? Mr Graven...

Right. Smoke fairly liberally into recesses, and then use a cloth or another clean, dry brush to wipe it out and away. That's what I did on my SoB flyers, if that helps?
