In an effort to avoid Metal Model Induced Insanity I wish to convert/scratch build my Stormtroopers. I will need 30, as like a good little bitch, I want three of everything for my Guard eventually.

So, starting with the standard Cadian Plastic, what can you reccomend? Sadly, I am utterly useless with Greenstuff, so I'm a bit buggered if your idea involves that medium.

Ideally, I'll be wanting beefed up Lasguns, perhaps heavier armour, pistol holsters and some backpacks to bulk the model up.

Another starting point, to get the armour done and dusted, perhaps I can start with the plastic scouts? Use the shotguns, add on the single scope from the Heavy Weapon kit, and replace the lower barrel with a Lasgun one? Don't mind using some Forgeworld, as I reckon this could work with the Cadian Respirator Heads?

I've toyed with using Cadian bodies with SM scout legs. Add some simple GS armour to the legs as a starting point.

Most stormies have small and technical backbacks so maybe the cadian vox packs with all the gubbins taken off.

The head will depend on the theme you are after.

Elysian lasguns with the magazines cut off will work. Just use wires connecting the backpack to where the magazine used to be will be pretty swish.

What sort of theme are you going for? something techy? feral? imperial?

Plain old Imperial. Nowt too fancy I'm afraid!

Interesting suggestion about the Elysian Lasgun.

In fact perhaps I shall simply spoil myself and use Elysians with the Grav Chutes?

I'm of the opinion that the headswaps on scouts just looks like scouts with helmets. I recommend using scout legs with Cadian bodies. The bodies will need some work, however, to make them look like carapace armor.

I would start with the basic cadian body and trim off the aquila over the heart and then a bit of putty to close the gap between the breast plates. Let that dry and then file it smooth. Pick up some .010 thickness plasticard or card stock. I prefer the plasticard so it will bond to the plastic. Attach a long strip of the plasticard over the chest and a shorter strip over the abdomen. The .010 plasticard can also be easily cut with a scissors and you can cut shapes for armor bits over the arms, thighs, and kneecaps.

You can convert shotguns from cadian lasguns by simply trimming the barrel down until it is a ring around the smaller barrel and trimming the barrel off entirely.

Hellguns need some more work. I would get plastic rod just a bit larger than the standard barrels and cut an angle off the end and glue it dirctly onto the body of the lasgun. Use whatever you like for power coils (I like the Dragonforge coils).

I would get a load of Vox backpacks and cut off the vox bits and connect the cables to the bottom of the pack.

A cheaper alternative to the FW respirator helmets would be the heavy weapon team "shades" head and the command squad respirators, both available from most bitz stores.

@LTGregor - Oooh... I'm liking the elbow and kneepads. I might.. umm.. borrow that idea for my carapaced up command squad. I was wondering how I could best represent the extra armour.

Yes, there's Pig Iron heads... However, I'm thinking that you're from the U.K., so here's another website that sells awesome gas mask heads:

They're from WestWindProductions. Check out the reviews on the site. Hope that helped.

Im personally not a fan of pig iron heads, and im currently in progress of converting a bunch of cadians to stormies. there arent too many usefull tutorials out there, but this one is the best http://www.freewebs.com/gowsk/isassembly.htm

Yeah, West Wind has some kick ass heads. My favourites are the ones from the German Sniper blister. Comes with four of the best 28mm heads I have ever seen!

Nice work on the conversion, but I was never a big fan of the HUGE goofy GW helmets, went with the Pig Iron helmets instead (different tastes etc). I'll have to post some pics of my stuff...

I cut up some extra tau right arms, cut off the small shoulder pad, hollowed it out, and used them as kneepads for vets. Should work for stormies too.

Adding sights, different ammo clips, etc. should help change up the appearance of the lasgun. Also, some sort of gasmask should provide that elite feel.

I like lt gregor's stormtroopers. Could also be used as veterans.

For stormtroopers, you could always use scout marines with IG heads, or some other helmeted head.

I was thinking of making a fallout power armor army out of space marines, I wouldn't use the shoulder pads and use alternate helmets, and use lasguns modified to look like assault rifles. They would end up looking alot different then regular marines. You could always do something like that, take marines, modify the armor, give them lasguns, and different helmets.

Those are ace scouts! I like what Gregor hase done as well. I like th pig iron stuff more and more, BUT it soon looks like everyone else will as well and isnt that the point to have a look not like everyone else? Just me?

I really like the westwind ones but cant find anyone in the US that carries them. If there is PLEASE post the link so I can throw money at them!.

IN the mean time keep us up to date on how you get along with yours hopefull you will figure it all out.

I pieced together some guard out of Cadian legs, modified SM Scout arms and body, with Pig Iron's Inner Guard heads. The main ways to make the body look a bit less scout-y is to trim off the aquilla and replace it with a breather and larger collar to support the domed heads. While mine are supposed to be elite guard with carapace and shotguns, it'd be easy enough to add hotshots instead as the larger body could easily contain the power packs

The other option that I tried (for my veterans) were Pig Iron's Visored Helmets on standard cadian bodies, with the scout legs left over from the previous experiment

I can't find the original article, or author (will update when I find it!)

It's a fairly simple, quick conversion to do.

1) Take your bulk standard lasgun and cut off the barrel, save that for later.
2) place your knife blade between the skull and the right hand wing on the side of the gun and cut there. This gives you your shorter body. Keep this bit as you can use it to extend another lasgun's body for a sniper rifle
3) Shave off the rest of the icons
4) Trim down the sight on top, making sure to leave the two bumps. Place a small strip of plastic card across the top of the bumps to make a handle
5) Stick the barrel back onto the front. Tada!
