Off the shoulder of Orion

I've put together a simple 6 turn campaign to introduce a few friends to 40K. I'm supplying the models, terrain etc and they do the beer and chips!
The campaign pack consists of a rule set, maps, strategic locations descriptions and Order of Battle lists for the two forces (Orks and Marines). If anyone wants to use these, pm me and I'll happily send them on.

We have used a number of house rules and I'm pretty relaxed on the force org chart for the new guys, so don't be surprised to see a few oddities in these reports. I'll be posting reports as the campaign progresses. Hopefully the narrative wil play out well.

Berephous Prime Campaign Map

Each location has special bonuses and rules. More on these as the campaign progresses
1: Star Port Angelus (Imperial base)
2: Forge Precint Alpha
3: Forge Precint Omega
4: Shield of the Emperor
5: Equatorial Hub
6: Oceanic Hub (Ork Base)
7; Berephous Prime Hive

As the guys I'm gaming with are new, I thought we'd start with a simple 400 point rescue mission. The winner would receive an extra 400 requisition points for the campaign. The set up was simple - the marine players had to save an inquisitor whose shuttle had been shot down in no mans land before the Orks reached him and secure the data stacks from the shuttle...

Prelude Battle - Rescue
The inquisitor pushed the tangled debris aside and stepped out into the gloomy forest. Creepers and thick foliage had arrested the decent of the stricken shuttle and his mighty armour had worn the worst of the impact. Even now his sensors could detect his Ordo Xenos squad extracting themselves from the wreckage and converging on his position.
The recon mission over the primary Ork landing site had been a risky endeavour, but the data they had collected would prove invaluable. If only a lucky shot from an Ork anti-aircraft battery hadn’t destroyed their port engine, they would now be descending into Imperial held territory and safety.
The inquisitor surveyed his surroundings. Thick jungle pressed in from all sides, except for the gouge torn out by the crashing shuttle, parts of which still burned in the pre-dawn light. He had seen what looked like an old outpost shortly before impact – it would make good shelter to await the arrival of the marine extraction force that had answered their hasty mayday.
A rune flashed in his visor as one of his Kill Team reported in. “My lord, I have multiple contacts to our south. Their disposition and energy signature is consistent with the foul Xenos”. The inquisitor cursed under his breath. The Orks has found them already, dispatched no doubt as soon as their ship had been hit. Well, they would not be found wanting in the face of the enemy. He would recover the critical data from the wreckage and then link up with the marines once they arrived.
All they had to do was stay alive long enough...
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

The Inquisitor set up in the fortified outpost and awaited the arrival of the marine extraction force

The elite Ordo Xenos squad took up firing positions to protect their Inquisitor.

Meanwhile, the Orks arrived in a pair of ramshackle trucks, supported by a trio of Killa Kan walkers and a flight of fast moving Deth Kopters.

On the right flank a marine combat team arrived and formed a fire base in a ruined outbuilding

With a roar of supercharged engines the main marine force arrived. The mighty dreadnought strode through the low jungle whilst the Rhino transport deployed a second marine combat squad and the marine commander, Boydus Maximus onto the outpost.
“Inquisitor Marius I believe?” Enquired the marine captain as he stepped onto the battlements.

On the left flank a squad clad in mighty terminator armour crashed through the foliage, the dense jungle slowing their progress.

The Orks opened fire on the deploying marines with a variety of crude but deadly weapons. Shoota fire and corkscrewing rokkits peppered the outpost and the Inquisition team. As the dust and smoke cleared it became apparent that not a single servant of the Emperor had fallen, such was the might of their armoured bodies.
Before the marines could rejoice, a spiralling rokkit launched from one of the Killa Kans slammed into the dreadnought. By pure change the Ork missile sheared through the main control centre, leaving the mighty hero a smoking wreck.
Determined to avenge their fallen brother, the marine counter strike blotted one of the Deth Kopters out of the air and disabled the Ork Warlord’s trukk, forcing him and his mob to dismount and continue their advance on foot.

The second Ork trukk fared better. Using a wooded area for cover it charged the marine firebase on the right flank. Caught by the unexpected appearance of the Ork mob, the firebase was quickly overwhelmed in a tide of green flesh and brutal choppas. Despite fighting bravely, the 5 man marine squad eventually succumbed to the superior numbers of the Orks.

At the outpost, the marine’s fire bounced harmlessly of the armoured Killa Kans as they advanced. Boydus Maximus and Inquisitor Marius surveyed their position and reached the same conclusion. There was no honour cowering in cover and letting the enemy take the initiative. It was time for action!
Charge men! Out into the open where there’s more cover!

This unexpected move caught the Orks by surprise, but with a guttural roar the greenskins surged forward, eager to get to grips with the marines and give them a taste of good old fashioned biffo.
Meanwhile, the terminator squad trudged onwards. Out of position they nevertheless added their prodigious firepower to the battle, gunning down a handful of Orks and sending the last two Deth Koptas crashing into the jungle.
The squads from the outpost charged down the slope and into combat with the advancing Killa Kans.

In a brutal fight the marines used a combination of anti tank krak grenades and power fists to disable or damage the Ork walkers. In reply, the Kans struck down three of the Emperors finest.
Meanwhile, the Ork warlord and his mob on foot swept around a nearby thicket and prepared to charge the hard pressed marines.

The desperate fighting reached its climax as the Ork charge crashed home. Orks and marines alike fell under brutal blows and close range gunshots. The Ork Warlord smashed marines aside with ease until he stood face to face with Inquisitor Marius and Captain Boydus. Bravely stepping between the rampaging Ork and their men, both Imperial heroes were gravely wounded, although the greenskin leader was also injured.

The terminators continued forward, but their heavy armour slowed their advance. It seemed as if they would be too late to save their brothers from the barbaric aliens.

The towering Ork Warlord laughed mockingly as he raised his crackling power klaw to finish the last marines. With the final reserves of their strength, Marius and Boydus threw themselves at the monstrous greenskin. Skewered by the captain’s blade, the Ork’s chest was crushed by the inquisitor’s power fist. With a surprised groan the Ork crashed to the ground.

Their will broken with the loss of their leader, the Orks turned to flee. The vengeful marines gunned down the retreating xenos, leaving none alive. The few Ork vehicles still mobile spun their wheels and quit the field, returning to their camp to deliver the news of their defeat.
Imperial Victory!

Inquisitor Marius and Ordo Xenos Retinue: Rescued
Imperial team now has access to Ordo Xenos Kill Teams as an Elites choice
Shuttle data stacks: Both secured
400 bonus requisition points to the Imperial team

I'll post the next two battles in a few days.

Thanks for the comments!

HBMC, the map is just a pic from a website copied into Word. I just used Word to insert shapes and numbers for the locations onto the picture.

The captain shows up in a few close ups in some of the other battle photos, which I'll try to get up over the weekend (we are up to turn two in real time)

Really, honestly, hats off to whoever painted that AoBR Captain. That really is the best looking AoBR Captain I've ever seen. Really clean and really nice.

Looking forward to more of this campaign, and the campaign rules as well.

What a great thing to do, especially with the detail and effort you've put into it. I think I'll move to NZ so I can be closer to you, maybe I can get the same treatment!

Thankfully, the Macro Cannons of the Channel Defense Battery will be unaffected by this push on the Northern Flank of Port Angelus. Units from the Star Port will take "The Five to the Hive".

Once again, great pictures, great battle report. Looking forward to the rest, and thanks for doing the game-for-chips-and-beer trade.

Brilliant pictures, nice to see fully painted marines and great idea for a campaign. I hope you guys have fine with this. (I have to give props to the paint quality as well, it's great).

BTW, I really hope the IoM wins. That campaign is taking place in my backyard! (Map is of SoCal)

Lads, thanks for the comments, but this thread is four years old!

The Mod Squad will be along shortly with heavy flamers, so it might pay to view the rest of this (now completed) campaign, along with three others, in the article section - link below

Cheers!
