Subject: Ian's Dayglo Daemonette Makeover! (24/02 - FINISHED! Full Army Photo time! )

So, not content with having two P&M blogs on the go already, here's another for a little filler project - the much needed updating of my Slaaneshi Daemon army. The current army and paint scheme can be seen on the army page here - http://www.dakkadakka.com/wiki/en/Ian%27s_Slaaneshi_Daemons
The list of jobs stands as....
1 x Keeper of Secrets (1ed) - Rebase, add detail - DONE
1 x Herald (Dark Age Games conversion) - Rebase - DONE
30 x Daemonettes (2ed) - Rebase, add detail - paint - DONE
7 x Daemonettes (3ed cute) - Rebase, add detail - DONE
8 x Daemonettes (1ed) - Rebase, add detail - DONE
7 x Fiends (1ed) - Rebase, add detail - paint - DONE
1 x Soulgrinder (1ed Great Unclean One conversion) - finish building, paint, rebase - DONE
1 x Keeper of Secrets (1ed) - paint - DONE
1 x Herald on Steed (2ed) - build, paint - DONE
1 x Herald on Chariot (2ed) - build, paint - DONE
1 x Fiend Leader (2ed) - build, paint - DONE
1 x Seeker Leader (3ed cute) - build, paint - DONE
20 x Daemonettes (1ed) - paint - DONE
10 x Furies (4ed Daemonette conversions) - paint - DONE
7 x Seekers (3ed cute) - paint - DONE
1 x Soulgrinder (Hive Tyrant conversion) - finish building, paint - DONE
3 x Daemon Princes (Avatar conversions) - build, paint - DONE
Plus updating the paint scheme. The current wash of red ink will be drybrushed over with a layer of Bronzed Flesh, which I've done to a few models, and makes them pop a bit more on the battlefield. Bright green will be added as a contrasting colour on wings, steeds, etc. And the whole army will be rebased to a simple grey gravel scheme. The finished force will come out to around 2500pts using the FOC, or 3000 if I go all apocalypse and include everything...
I'm away again - this time for three weeks in Glasgow, so hopefully I'll have time to get a lot of this done...
Automatically Appended Next Post:
First proper post, then - I've started with the Furies, converted from plastic Daemonettes with some wings from the GW site. Simple enough. I've got to pick up some green wash for the wings, and some glue for the bases, so not quite finished yet..

Nice job on the daemons, but i have to ask, why bother making one of the worst units in the dex?

Haha. Part of the theme I guess. The army is slaaneshi, I'm allowing myself non-aligned units, but no daemons from other gods ( and I don't wan't to cop out and have converted 'Slaanesh' Plaguebearers and 'Slaanesh' Bloodcrushers and stuff). However, this only gives me seven unit types to choose from! So in the interests of unit diversity, I thought I'd model up some Fury-equivalents.
Anyway, they DO have a place in my army. The army tactics tend to revolve around landing far away (out of rapid fire range) and then using huge charges to get into combat and tie up dangerous enemies while the rest of your army (the slower Daemonettes) lands. First wave models are therefore usually seekers and fiends, but I can see an advantage using furies, since they're about the only thing in the army who can easily assault high-up enemy units.

So, had a long day yesterday and got my Thraka Green and PVA glue and finished the Furies and the Seekers. Turns out they didn't need much, just a wash of Thraka Green and a drybrushed/flatbrushed highlight of the original Goblin Green with a touch of white over the top.
I then started the rebasing project with all of the 2ed Daemonettes. My immediate thought is that the green works so well as a contrasting colour that I should try and incorporate it into the older units. Something simple, like all the tongues could be green. I'm also thinking of incorporating the white cloth.
On another note, I was under the impression that PVA glue was all the same, and so buy the cheap art shop stuff rather than the overpriced GW tube. However, this GW stuff i picked up is actually really good! Turns out there are different sorts of PVA. Thorougly recommended...

Gave the Fiends a new coat of Bronzed Flesh, rebased them, and painted their tongues green. Looking much better now, I think. I also managed to add some additional green and white detail to the 2ed Daemonettes, but my camera went crazy before I could photo them. More pics when i get it working again...!

Not much to report today - progress continues on the 20 identical 1ed Daemonettes, but in a little distraction, I rebased and did a bit of srucing up on my floaty herald. She's a conversion form a Dark Age Games model - can't remember which one, though...

I'm surprised you didn't try a few limb twists, swaps and head swaps the dark elf corsairs bits would have been perfect to spice these up...But I guess it would have slowed down the project a lot and actually cost money so I can see why not!

No, they're just Soulgrinders. They just won't be able to see over as many things as a real Soulgrinder. I'm gonna have a real Daemon Chariot conversion later on.
Anyway, this is for a number of reasons...
- I built them out of bits I had lying around, and none of those bits were very big.
- I'm cheap, and don't want to spend £70 on the incredibly ugly SG models
- They fulfill the golden rule of army collection - 'If it doesn't fit in the case, it doesn't go in the army'
If someone has a problem playing against them, I'll just take Daemon Princes instead, I'll have three after all...

So, the first Soulgrinder has been retouched and painted. I decided to stick with mainly silver on this one, with the other having more brass. Of course, I can't paint the other one yet, as I have no spray primer up here in Glasgow (and the flesh tone really doesn't work over painted white). I'll be back in London on friday, so I'll spray these last things over the weekend...

The final Daemonette models were retouched this morning. Some are 1ed models (but more interesting ones than the 20 above!) and the others are the 3ed cute ones. I've got an urge now to ebay just enough dameonettes to make all the squads multiples of 6, of the same edition. So, 3 more 2ed, 5 more 3ed, two more 1ed. Hmm. Maybe a waste of money.....but the gods would smile on my dice more, right?
I've also started work on the bits of a 2ed Fiend I had lying around. Since he's got bigger claws than the 1ed ones, I reckons he'd make a perfect model for the Unholy Might upgrade. Needs some GS work to fill in the gaps though...
