THE JUNOS MOLES

[TR] 10 Veterans, Shotguns, 3 Flamers, Chimera
[TR] 10 Veterans, Shotguns, 3 Flamers, Chimera
[TR] 10 Veterans, Shotguns, 3 Grenade Launchers, Chimera
[TR] 10 Penal Legion
[FA] Sentinel, Lascannon

MISSION: Annilation
DEPLOYMENT: Spearhead

PRELUDE

IG win roll off and elect to go first. Penal Legion roll Psycho (Fearless, Counter Charge, Furious Assault.) Four Chimera deploy along the back (left to right - Grenade Launcher Vets, Flamer Vets and Flamer Command.) Sentinel deploys in front of Chimera. Penal Legion deploy on the 12" mark.

Trukk sets up as far right and north as possible, with Big Mek Trukk south followed by two Deffkoptas. Snikrot plus Kommandos ambush.

IG win Scout roll off and elect to go second. North-most Deffkopta turbo boosts. Penal Legion move to within 12" of it. Second Deffkopta turbo boosts south of first Deffkopta. Sentinel moves forward, behind the Penal Legion.

Orks fail to seize initiative.

TURN 1

Penal Legion move towards closest Deffkopta, Sentinel moving up behind. All the Chimera combat speed forward. Shooting sees the closest Deffkopta destroyed (failed both 3+ cover saves - grrr!) while KFF saves a Trukk from the Sentinel.

Trukk moves up and unloads Shootas in front of the Penal Legion. Big Mek Trukk attempts to go flat out through the forest... and immobilises itself (even with the Reinforced Ram reroll - argh!). Remaining Deffkopta moves to get side armour on the Command Chimera. Big Mek successfully re-mobilises his Trukk. Deffkopta misses Command Chimera. Shootas kill 5 Penal Legion. My Trukk finally hits something - and explodes the Sentinel! Takes another 2 Penal Legion with it, but the remaining 3 are fearless, so hang around to accept the Shoota boy charge. Even making their furious charge, the Penal Legion are (expectedly) wiped out for the loss of 2 boyz.

DA DARK ANGELZ: 2 KP, THE JUNOS MOLES: 1 KP

TURN 2

Left two Chimera move forward, but others remain still to bring more fire. A heavy bolter sees off the remaining Deffkopta, and other shooting kills 4 shoota boyz and wounds the Nob.

Shoota boyz re-embark on their Trukk and the Trukk moves up. The Big Mek's Trukk attempts to move flat out again, and this time successfully navigates the undergrowth! Trukk shooting returns to form, and fails to do anything (may have actually hit - I was getting a lot more hits this game! Just no lucky penetrations after the Sentinel...)

DA DARK ANGELZ: 2 KP, THE JUNOS MOLES: 2 KP

TURN 3

Chimera continue to shuffle forward. I suddenly realise I am in a killing zone . Massed fire eventually cracks the top Trukk (Kerrunch!). The boyz bail out out of sight of the remaining Chimera (which unsuccessfully has a shot at the Big Mek Trukk. May have hit - the KFF was working overtime this game, and doing very well!)

The Kommandos were delayed by the Master of the Fleet, so the boyz had to crack the Chimeras on their own. Why I didn't use my boarding plank is anyone's guess... The Trukkless Shoota boyz move and assault the Command Chimera, immobilising it good and proper - including removing both weapons and shaking it. The Big Mek Trukk moves towards the left-most Chimera, the Shoota boyz (not the Big Mek) bail out and multi assault the two Chimera - immobilising both, as well as shaking one and stunning the other. Things are not looking good...

DA DARK ANGELZ: 2 KP, THE JUNOS MOLES: 3 KP

TURN 4

All four Chimera unload their contents in front of the Orks, the sole mobile one then cruising south. Fire sees both Ork mobs broken

Snikrot and his Kommandos arrive on the North edge, behind the two left most Chimera and their recently disembarked contents and move towards them. The Big Mek's Trukk moves up. The Ork Waaagh is called, and the Kommandos run like the wind. The Big Mek disgorges his burna on the left most vets killing three. The Kommandos then multi charge both Vet units whilst Snikrot targets the second Chimera from the left. Snikrot removes another weapon from the Chimera and shakes it again. The Kommandos kill 10 vets, breaking both units - but not before taking a heavy toll - 5 dead Kommandos and a wounded Snikrot!

DA DARK ANGELZ: 4 KP, THE JUNOS MOLES: 5 KP

TURN 5

Flamer Vets flee off the table, but the Grenade Launcher Vets don't - which along with the Command squad moving closer, kill 3 Kommandos and send the sole survivor packing. The mobile Chimera continues to circle around. Another Chimera pops the Big Mek's Trukk (another Kerrunch!) and the mobile Chimera takes some pot shots at the Big Mek, but his cover saves him.

Kommandos and Shootas continue to flee. The Big Mek attempts to get into burna distance of the right most Veteran Squad, but is slowed down too much by the difficult terrain he moves into. The fleeing Shootas take optimistic pot shots at the mobile Chimera's side armour.

DA DARK ANGELZ: 4 KP, THE JUNOS MOLES: 7 KP

TURN 6

The remaining Vets and Command move in and burn the Big Mek out of his cover. The mobile Chimera also moves up - just in case.

The remaining Ork units continue to flee. The fleeing Shootas take optimistic pot shots at the mobile Chimera's rear armour, even scoring two hits - but no glances.

DA DARK ANGELZ: 4 KP, THE JUNOS MOLES: 8 KP

VICTORY: THE JUNOS MOLES

AFTERMATH - DA DARK ANGELZ
Well - that wasn't pretty.

The decision to *not* outflank the Deffkoptas was mostly to have them available sooner, especially with the Master of the Fleet around. I originally thought (right after losing both) that this was a bad idea - they effectively did nothing and had a 2/3 chance of coming on behind a Chimera and whacking it for good measure. However, they did remove fire from my Trukks (the two failed cover saves would also have failed obscured saves - but may not have glanced/penetrated...). Not a good game for them. Of course the game I split them into two units is the KP one...

I *think* my original strategy was to swing around the right and hope to catch the majority of Chimera between my Trukks, Deffkoptas and Kommandos. Instead, the boyz just ended up in a kill zone. I think I would have done much better to attack down the left of the IG forces, using his own Chimeras to block line of sight or give cover saves.

I forgot about my boarding plank. The Big Mek Trukk could have moved to the left of the left most Chimera and had the Nob dispense some Powerklaw. Given my horrid run of combat, it would only have immobilised / stunned it - but my boyz would have still been safely in their Trukk for another turn, with little ability for the IG to do much about it...

Hope you enjoyed!

Nice report man thanks for sharing..

Penal legions seem like an awesome unit for casual gaming, I take it they're cheap points wise?

I can answer that one, given that the Moles are mine
The Penal squad cost 80 points, so not the cheapest unit in the book, but they did their job by slowing the Orks down and letting me deal with the deffkoptas before the boyz hit home. I was especially pleased with their roll of "Psycho" as it fitted nicely with the models.

Thanks for reading *and* commenting. One of the reasons for posting these is to make sure we have the rules right - so I especially appreciate yours! We have been playing transports counting towards KPs - below are what I believe are the pertinent rules...

p91 "At the end of the game, each player receives 1 'kill point' for each enemy unit that has been completely destroyed."

p5 "Vehicle units are represented by single models in the case of tanks and other large vehicles, or as a group of smaller vehicles."

Of course - if this causes further discussion, I'll have to take it to YMDC

No need since you have been playing it correctly. Dedicated transports does indeed count towards KP.

Nice report, not easy to beat a list that is so obviouslt tailored against your own...

Nice report, your army is looking good. Will be nice to see once you get it all painted up.

The inclusion of the master of the fleet does seem a bit suspect here, as does the complete lack of meltas which is what you'd usually see on veterans. Mechvets are a pretty rough list though, so don't feel too bad about the loss Arakasi.

I'm not sure if it was tailored - only @EndTransmission can answer that - but I could understand why - we were 3-0 to me before this, including being tabled two twice!

I have had the same issue with Tau - meching up in an attempt to find a suitable response...

Importantly: It was a fun game. Losing teaches you more. Not every battle is going to be "fair".

Though admittantly, given I have already questioned reserving 50% of my force (and haven't substantially changed it) that Master of the Fleet was particularly nasty... Still, he was in our allied game (but then, so were the meltas...)

I'm not trying to hijack your thread or anything but what other special rules can you roll for them?
