I copied this explanation from another post of mine rather than linking. Moving this over to a more appropriate place on the forums (copied more of original text so it makes more sense and you get full story)

So I got myself an AoBR set and assembled (should have thought that through) then disassembled, yes I used glue so I had to tear off arms. Thankfully with no damage to the details. I then went about looking at different books and pics online to choose a chapter. I had wanted to do something simple so I didn't go beyond my skills, as I have no history with painting or art of any kind really. After reading some stuff from the Insignium Astartes about different markings and such I really wanted to make my own chapter, but I had sort of settled on a black and white 50/50 design before I came across the Omega Marines.

I looked further into their history and I couldn't find much. Essentially all I found were sources saying they were a codex styled successor to the ultramarines and that Roubote Gulliman was their Primarch, and one or two saying that their primarch was unknown. However they contributed Troops apparently with a lot of dreads to the 3rd war for armageddon, and were founded in M40. This was alright but it wasn't what I was really looking for being that I felt it was a bit soon to have a successor chapter of an essentially brand new chapter and I didn't really want a strict codex chapter. All the while I was still painting my marines in a black and white scheme. . . So I've been working on my fluff/excuse for taking the Omega paint scheme and not their entire heritage, while still not being a successor chapter.

So I painted my marines opposite of the codex Omegas, I call them the Progenitors of Omega and I figure they will represent the, I don't really want to say, "rejects" of Omega but more of the testing/gene pool. These were the guys that the omegas are comprised of but because they didn't follow Gulliman to the tee, as I assume the Omegas do, that they weren't fully admitted to the chapter but they still consider themselves to represent Omega Marine Ideals.
(this Idea I stole from a forum post I found randomly talking about a play strategy called omega marines where you try to use as many marines as you can because te sheer amount of models will overwhelm most armies cause they just can't take out that many marines. So I decided to incorporate that into my plan)

With that, I figure that since they aren't really a supported chapter this would fit in well, because they would have to rely on their men because they weren't being regularly being given tanks and other heavy armor. I wanted these marines to feel like they were true brothers because it's all they have to rely on, aside from their bolters. Lack of armor mentioned I did want them to have dreads and I think the sense of brotherhood covers that. If one of their brothers was injured they'd do all they could to bring him back to the fight. So if they spent their resources (what little they could scrounge up) on getting him a dread built, it made sense to me. I haven't decided if I want them to be a fleet based chapter, that would add to the brotherhood element because they don't have specific recruiting worlds, just hope to pick up trustworthy and viable stock when they can, however that might not work with the lack of resources. Maybe it could be like some last gift from the empire as like a "Go Free, but you are on your own" thing. So let me know what you think.

I really rather like the contrast between the black with white edging and the white with black recesses... simple but effective.

Flinty: Thanks, I was reading some stuff about painting space wolves and doing something fancy with light blues etc, but i wanted something that wasn't crazy time consuming but still had a nice effect. Hence what you see here
I was also thinking about using some devlan mud to add dirt effects later because I can't imagine white armor staying white for long and i think the pure white with brown staisn would look better than off-white blue

Cjsuner: Yeah I was surprised that not many people have done them. I assumed when i first found Dakka that there would be tons of them. Being that they are really simple to do

Anyone have ideas/comments about the back story?

Looks very clean I like them. Something Ive always found when doing half and half marines is that solid helmets can look striking on them Best of luck looking forward to see how this turns out.

So I finished up my tac squad. All i need to do is chapter symbols I think i'm going to try to paint them because its a hassle combining decals

I apologize for badly lit pics. I'm currently using a white dress shirt over a clear plastic box lid as a light screen. I read somewhere someone uses white paper and I want to kick myself for not thinking about that one haha.
After I get the chapter icons on there I'll upload some individual pics

Thanks all. Really glad you like it. I appreciate the input.

Getting a bit bored with painting shoulder pads, I figured why not sculpt them.

Also I remembered I lied when I said I hadn't worked with GS. I forgot I burnt a hole in the top of my dread with my desk lamp. Which I fixed, I don't have and progress pics of that but I can get some finished ones.
so here are the results of my GS shoulder pad adventure

Here's the unfinished/unstarted arms for my terminators

And here is my painted terminator with same enhancements

I like this one best out of what I have so far. Wish I could recreate it better. Or knew anything about casting.

I've been sitting around playing with GS trying to make perfect shoulder pads and I got fed up, So I attempted to make a GS mold of my icon, using my citadel paint palette as a holder. This didn't work too great so I made a support from clay.I'll see tomorrow if I need to make another mold.

And I found that the GS was a bit flimsy so here's the support for a future mold

The GS adventure continues. . .
I filled and made my clay backed mold today but I think I used too much yellow in the GS because it's not at all as crisp as my non-backed mold. Which I made with a ratio closer to 2:1 blue to yellow where as the new mix is more closely to 1:1 and maybe on the yellow heavy side. Anyhow enough jabber here is the mold

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Yet more pics of the same old stuff

So I repainted my tactical squad's shoulder pads and I'm far more satisfied this time

Also my first cast of my shoulder pad icons came out pretty well. This one was from the first blue heavy mold.

I think it's good, aside from the crack but I was a bit too violent while I trimmed it. I still need to test the yellow heavy mold. I also made a third, Yes a third, mold. Blue heavy this time, with the same clay backer. Hopefully it'll be what I'm looking for.

So let me know what you guys think. Comments/Critiques/Complaints/Advice/Ideas, all welcome. I like feedback even if you don't like my stuff Thanks for reading.

I won't be able to get much done today as I'll be busy making pretzel dogs all afternoon, yeah for mother's day.

I was however thinking about my fluff and I think it'd work a lot better if the Omegas were fleet based. I was thinking more like single ship based, but I haven't done much research into how many people it takes to crew or how many can live upon a battle barge. My reasoning behind the fleet based decision is:

Since they aren't very well funded/supported by the empire it wouldn't make too much sense to have them hopping all over the galaxy without ships (assuming that with their current resource income they'd be hard pressed to run a planet AND maintain a fleet), also I figure that they wouldn't have a home planet because when they rebelled/disagreed with the original omega higher-ups I doubt the higher-ups would go "Well since you don't agree with us, here's a planet, We're leaving, have a nice day" I feel it'd make more sense to have my omegas being "sent off" on a battle barge. Puritan style.

Another decision I made is that the chapter (at least for now) shouldn't have more than 275-350 marines. Since these guys aren't really a fully sanctioned chapter they wouldn't have the same numbers.

I still have more to work out with it. But let me know what you guys/girls think so far

Also if anyone has some good pics or descriptions of a battle barge's interior, Aside from the picture of Horus's ship, please post it or link it or something.

I wish I had thought of all this before I based my minis ::shrug:: I guess it could be worse

I hadn't really planned on having any bikes in this army, but then I've never played a game of 40k so that choice is based on the fact that I just don't like the look of them. As I think about it though that might go well with the army. Seems easier to produce a bunch of bikes, instead of one tank. Hmm. I will have to think about it. Edit: I might as well paint up one squad, it'd be better to have them and not use them. We shall see

However, if I were to do one up. Do you think I should paint the bike opposite to the sides of the marine? I would assume so, but maybe you have some better idea?

Flash man: thank you, I'm trying haha.

I realized about 20 mins ago that I forgot to put my final icon casts up here. I then figured I'd at least put one on my finished termie, however I seem to have lost my super glue. So I made a combo pic with my first attempt and then my cast ones so you can compare how well they came out to how junky my sculpted ones are

I was going to post a pic of my final mold but its the same thing as before just a tad bit darker green so I'll spare you that, I did upload it to my gallery if you really want to see it.
but I took a pic of my WIP terminator sergeant, nothing amazing. Just figured since I had the camera out that I might as well.

I have a reputation, Modile, a reputation as a fair, honest man who treats his soldiers well and supports them in the face of darkness. Potentially, that reputation makes me soft. It seems I understand failure and forgive it. Some, like Kowle, believe me to be a weak commissar, not prepared to take the action my rank demands. Not prepared to enforce field discipline where I see it failing. I am an Imperial commissar. I will enflame the weak, support the wavering, guide the lost. I will be all things to all men who need me. But I will also punish without hesitation the weak, the incompetent, and the treasonous.

Ok, No painting to show off yet. Trying to get my fluff ideas down so that I don't forget them, it'll also allow anyone with gripes to call me out if something doesn't match up. FYI I compiled this list over about an hour and a half while watching T.V. and surfing for info (who said ADHD was a bad thing) which led to some of my opinions being formed and then changed so I apologize if it leads to any confusion.

Last night watching the Discovery channel or one of those channels in the "education block" (as I refer to them) and saw for prolly the 3rd time a special on the the Greek vs Persian battle at Thermopylae. Which we all know from the awesome comic (now movie) by Frank Miller, "300". It made me think:

1. How many Greek based SM chapters are there? I don't think any of the canon chapters are, of course I could just be late to the party.

2. Could I use that also as a loose influence. Just as Leonidas took his 300 when the elders warned against it (this may be more from movie than reality, but that means little to me since my SM are fiction anyway) My Chap Master could have a similar complex/desire. Which would more readily explain why my chapter broke off from their originators. This new idea also makes me want to change the name/origins. Haven't thought about that yet though.

3. Maybe I could also try to design/adapt some sort of battlefield tactics that represent not just the spartan hoplites ability but also my chapters nomadic/poor capacity: Namely something strong but fairly cost effective. Of course I could throw a ton of melee termies out front to represent hoplites but my chapter (least in my thought process) can't afford that. So if I can work out something that represents both very well, I'll be happy. This is just a nice bonus mind you. Again I've never really played a game against a person so this may go out the window, for now I'm free to dream big.

4. . . . I was gonna whine about how this fits into my brotherhood idea, but I feel I've done that a bit much, and honestly what chapter doesn't have that feel. So I'm going to pass on that point.

New 4. I thought about my battle barges name and I want it to be something like "The Dark Nomad" or "The Black Nomad". I might even just go with "The Nomad'. Which I looked up in Greek and got Nemein, which I think is pretty cool the way I pronounce it in my head. Looking into Dark I came across Melas. So without proper conjugation I'm left with Ho Melas Nemein. Which I don't like at all. Although I came upon something I found really interesting. I can't remember exactly where it was from I believe I found it on lexicanum.com (not sure how reliable, it is though) it said that latin while used in the canon is not the actual language it just represents it. So I feel better about using typical English and just calling it "The Black Nomad" cause then I won't have to decipher Greek every time I mention the name to someone. So that's nice.

I think it's time to wrap this post up. I would really like to get some feedback on all of this, so drop me a post. Thanks for reading. Hopefully next time I'll have some nice pretty pics for you.

Almost forgot. comisarmilo: While I believe that compared to some other things on this site you have greatly over scored my work, I do appreciate the support and that you like my scheme and "skills"

Worked a bit on my marines today. mainly my termie sergeant. I decided to cut the shield off his shoulder and covered the spot with a purity seal. I also played around with some other purity seals.
I do plan to redo his name in all caps

I completely redid his power sword, blatant rip off of a google search sword. So props to whoever made it first, i like it

I also decided in my GS seal frenzy to fix my broken chapter icon. That way I wouldn't have to hope super glue would close the gap. I think it all came out pretty good.

My camera needs to be cleaned or something, it won't take pics that are clear at all. lame. I didn't get much done anyway so it's not a huge deal. I finally got some krazy glue and when I put the icons on the shoulders I didn't like them.
they were too raised and looked like they were just tacked on. So I made yet another icon and yet another mold. hopefully I can work out the camera issues and get some of them up here.

I've been in a painting funk trying to think of styles for my power swords. wish I had pics for ya guys. that's all I have for right now, hopefully I can get something good done today.

Karmine: Thanks. When I get my camera working you I'll show you what I didn't like and obviously my new icons which I think are much improved upon the original.
My main issue with the old ones was that they are too "thick" even though the shape of them is nice they look like they were just tacked on there as opposed to being forged as a part of the pads

Unclean One: Like zebra stripes I.E. uneven/organic or equal/parallel lines? or like a black/white camo scheme?
