Hello,

I've never painted space marines of any kind and am working out how to paint my new space wolf army. I plan to diverge from the traditional GW scheme, and go with colors that envoke the lightning, thunder, and ice I associate with the wolves. Please tell me what you think of the colors/scheme so far. I would love to hear constructive input before I begin work on the rest of the army.

My flesh tones were old and kind of chunky. I have picked up new ones and a set of washes since having painted this dude. Also, this model could use more wolf parts, as I just pulled it out of an old starter set and slapped a Marauder head on.

Thanks in advance

Have you used Hawk Turquoise to highlight the armour? That shade of blue looks really out of place on top of the duller gray. Might work better the other way round....

The rest looks ok but would benefit a lot from neater painting: There are a few places where it looks like you've gone outside of the target area with your brush.

Definatly hawk Turquoise. To much? Are you recommending I start there and work backward into the fortress/shadow gray "high lights"? And you are right about tightening up the paint job.

You could try to reverse the colours, but the problem is this; Turquoise is a mixture of blue and green so it will never look right as a highlighting colour on top of a simple gray. You'll probably be better off just adding a little white to your base colour and using that. I know that means mixing paints up, but i think you'll get a much better result!

Dull down the red. It looks too vanilla marine-ish.

Thin your skin paint down some get a pallet with dimples in it put 2 drops of paint to one of water mix that up.
Start with a dark color I use bestial brown then dwarf flesh leaving the creases brown then elf flesh to highlight then a wash of sepia to blend it together
As to the color of the armor I am a traditionalist and paint them as normal.

Thanks to you both, I may chuck the red completely. Also, I'm looking forward to trying the faces again.

If you're having trouble with acheiving a neat paint job, I have a metod that means you never have to edge highlight, works really well with my Wolves;
1) Primer black
2) Base everything in Adeptus Battlegrey Foundation paint, even the face, metal, everything.
3) Give everything that you based in Battlegrey (so, everything ) a coat of Badab Black Wash. Make sure it's thick enough to create good shading.
4) Drybrush with Fortress Grey. I do mine quite heavily, but personal taste dictates obviously.

Must give credit to the site I found this on, not my scheme

Kind of a pre-heresy theme (I detest the baby blue wolves)
You can then do all the details (Shoulder pads, weapons, bling, etc) in your lightning/elements theme, or even still go for your edge highlighting if you feel up to it.
I'm afraid I can't help you with the faces, as I leave my faces the same grey as the rest of the model xD
I would post a picture of one of mine, but I has no camera atm, little bro's nicked it and gone on holiday with it :(

hi there, I agree with sandyman, i also use battlegrey on my sw armour but hen i drybrush fortress grey and do my fine highlights before I wash with badab black and this ties the colours together without the chalky look you can sometimes get (please don't look at the wolves i posted they were done ages ago! and i've since lifted my game ) if you still wanted to keep with your thunder and lightning theme for them then i suggest their shoulder pads are a good canvas for this.
hope this helps even a little.

@Nerdfest; I considered using the Badab Black as a final stage, but I feel that the mode would look too dark, and to be fair mine don't come out that chalky, though I also have no comparison
I also agree that the shoulder pads would be a good place to illustrate various themes.
