the Mothership...

I recently got a RT land raider to go with my OOP marine army (not a style choice, lol, just simply that i picked up my army in the first few months of 3rd edition and those were the models availabe). i've had the metal hybrid crusader since it came out and it definitely looks cool but the style matches the current rhino models a heck of alot more than my old style ones. So here's what i picked up on ebay:

While the godhammer pattern LR is useful, the LRC matches my playstyle a bit better (MOAR DAKKA!) so i decided to take a look and see if anyone had made a crusader variant out of the old model for inspiration. after a few attempts at searching and looking through a few hundred land raider pics on google, i found only found a redeemer variant meaning i had to actually come up with something on my own. I'm still thinking about how to bulk up the hurricane bolters in addition to the ravenwing bike plates; my current idea is to add some ammo containers on a small protrusion on the back of the sponson. also, i'm debating if i should add more painting detail. i tried painting this tank up to match my first 40k army from 12 years ago and frankly i didn't do all that great of a job back then. while i used 5-6 colors per model and stayed between the lines, i didn't use any washes other than black (too much!) and did no shading or highlighting whatsoever. Its quite the quandry...

The other modelling question i have is whether you guys think the multimelta i kit bashed is better or if i should use the RT bike one i have in my bits box. The RT one is a bit more true to the land raider but it won't match the mix of early 3rd and late 2nd edition models i have.

edit:
I've additionally converted the old bits that were originally lascannons into flamestorm cannons for my redeemer variant.

thanks for looking! here are a few other modelling threads i've put up:

Minor Update on my Landraider...

I did add an update to this particular Landraider in that I used the old rogue trader lascannons to convert Redeemer flamestorm guns for the sponsons so it can now be fielded as either a Crusader or Redeemer. I also decided to stay with the snub nosed multimelta for the top turret.

Wow, thats old school. My personal vote is to magnetize very weapon option you'd ever need on it!!!

The multi-melta looks totally fine though. Just put that OG slutbitch on the table and play with it!

Looks great. I've been wanting an old school landraider for my Emperors Children army, but they are usually out of my price range.

Interesting idea, but the purist in me knows those bolters are from 2nd ed, not RT, and all the other more modern bits throw me off. I'm glad you kept them to mostly early 90's pieces though.

Personally, I would have tried to track down the old Rhino bolters to make the hurricane bolter racks, and the aforementioned sidecar multimelta for the pintle mount. Good work regardless.

yeah, they're the 2nd edition fat boy bolters, of which i had *tons* in my bits box. my BA army was built at the switch over to 3rd edition and consists mainly of 2nd and 3rd ed metal models (only 2 plastic marines in the 100+ guys!) with 3rd edition bolters as i liked the look of those weapons immensely compared with the second edition ones. using those bolters that i didn't for my infantry was a marriage of convienence. i also used a few 4th edition bits on the crusader since i had some ravenwing sprues and needed a TL-assault cannon and something to hold the hurricane bolters together. in the end, it was a compromise. i tried to get it to look old school yet still be functional as well as modelled to represent the current variants while staying on a budget (namely $0, as i planned to raid my bits box). the rhino hatch on the front was simply because the design looked empty on that side with the assault cannons sticking out on the right. i saw someone convert a version with the AC's seperated with one on each side but, while looking nice, that design creates a bit of a rules problem as someone may insist i draw LOS and range from one side and not the other; putting them together made it look more like the current one and gets rid of that problem.

out of curiosity, is it obvious that the old metal stormshields i mounted on the front scoops are the frag launchers? i tried to use something that evokes the feel of the frag launchers but has an older style look.

not old enough for some collectors! and, yes, it does. i actually have a 3rd edition crusader (with those god aweful metal bits) that i bought when it first came out but the fact that my dread/speeder/rhino were all OOP styles made the LR look a bit out of place as it visually is almost identical to the current one. that's when i started looking for a RT LR.
