the Mothership...

When the Nid army book came out early this year, i found myself considering another army. Realizing that i don't play twice weekly and don't need a 6th army at GW's prices, i decided to see what i could scrounge up from the sizable gaming collection i have sitting in the basement. A few years ago, i picked up a bunch of alien vs predator clix boxes on discount in prep for a convention game i was going to run. Initially, i planned to run a minis scenario at cons that had the players as the young predators fighting their way out of a temple filled with aliens (like the first AVP movie). Shortly thereafter, i pretty much stopped going to cons for no particular reason and the figs were just sitting in the basement gathering dust and thus became the basis for my small completely non-optimized nid army. I pretty much went with the closest nid equivalent i could find for the look of the figs and added a few more to fill out the points (like the action figures i used for the trygon/lictor/zoanthrope). i did a quick paintjob on the action figures to have them generally match the color of the clix as well as rebasing them on standard GW bases (except the trygon since i didn't have one of those... i used a shadowrun action figure base instead).

here's a pic of the force overall.

the face hugger is a lictor while the chest burster baby alien is the zoanthrope. the eggs are spore mines (who over the coarse of 3 games have done NOTHING except get driven over by tanks, lol!).

my regular aliens which i use as genestealers. i have two squads with broodlords in spore pods (the queen's egg sacs) and two smaller ones as infiltrators (the ones on columns).

and my big bugs here. the alien queens are naturally hive tyrants (with acid blood!!) while the large action figure alien is the trygon.

If you want to zoom in on the pics, just click on them and it'll take you to the dakka gallery pack with its auto zoom function... even if you hate them, don't forget to vote! here's a couple of other figs i've painted/converted over the last year for those interested (and they're NOT counts as.. they're legit!).

Cool stuff. I was thinking that you would use one of the queens as a tervigon, but a trygon is a good choice as well.

i can take some pics later tonight. as for the models, the clix figs i got years ago at a convention at a great price (it was buy one, get one free) so i got 4 packs of aliens total, a predator pack, and a queen pack. when i decided to do the army, i got another queen pack on ebay and two Aliens action figure boxes for the trygon, lictor, and zoanthrope. i'm not the one buying up the figs currently!

i actually use the largest one as the trygon. technically, its the alien from the movie that speared a predator with its tail and brought him up to its face. i cut the tail off at the predator's chest, reposed/based it, and painted it to somewhat match the clix figs. if i had kept the egg sac attached to to the queen, i would have used her as a tervigon though. in the end, my need for some more units (the sac is now my drop pod) and the fact that the "queen" should be the HQ (so hive tyrant) took precedence.

yeah, i've got them based similary to my space hulk deathwing army (see the link in my OP) for that reason. i'll eventually get around to doing them with the snow basing also. if i ever run space hulk again, these guys are my genestealers! i'd love to play against ripley and IG as well but my IG army was built long ago and my bits were curiously lost over several moves since. :( besides the AVP game i planned to run at conventions, i also picked up some haloclix figs and planned to occasionally run them in a three way game. AVPVS... aliens vs predators vs spartans with some UNSC marine fodder thrown in with the spartans!

the spores are the egg sac from the alien queen model. if you remember the "aliens" movie and AVP, it's the back part of her that actually lays the eggs. i just pried it off the base (and by pry i mean PRY since i actually bent a heavy duty metal bar trying to... what ever glue they use on that i have to find!). i then propped them up with other bits from the sac and i think it turned out ok. i get some strange looks from people when i field them as they look vaguely anatomical.
