After a weekend of playing Daemons at Silver Sorcerer, I had my 40k bug back, but really didn't want to play Daemons. I thought I'd take my old Space Marines and see how they fared against the Grot Kan Wall. The mission was Seize Ground, four objectives, long table edges. Photos taken by Panic throughout...

ArbitorIan's White Scrapes [1500pts]

* Librarian [Epistolary, Terminator Armour, Vortex of Dooom, Gate of Infinity]
* Dreadnought [TL Lascannon & Missile Launcher]
* 5 Assault Terminators [Thunder Hammers & Storm Shields]
* 5 Tactical Marines in Razorback [TL Lascannon]
* 5 Tactical Marines in Razorback [TL Lascannon]
* 4 Bikers [2 Meltaguns]
* 2 Attack Bikes [2 Multimeltas]
* Vindicator
* Vindicator
* 5 Devastators [2 Lascannons, 2 Missile Launchers]

Panic's Grot Kan Wall [1500pts]

* 2 Big Meks with KFF
* Five Megagrots
* 3 Killa Kanz
* 3 Killa Kanz
* 3 Killa Kanz
* Deff Dred
* Deff Dred
* 3 Buggies
* 3 Buggies
* 3 Buggies
* 23 Grots
* 23 Grots
* 11 Grots

Here's an image of deployment - Panic keeps one Grot squad in reserve and I keep my Terminator Assault Squad for DS later. I get to set up second so bunch up in the corner for a few static turns of shooting...



So, a predictable Grot first turn, as everything runs forward as fast as possible.



In return, combined shooting from the Marines blows up two buggies, one Kan and takes out one of the Deff Dreads




While the Librarian does his Gate and foolishly scatters too close to the reduced Kan squad. Silly Librarian.



In the Grot second turn the line continues it's advance, wrecking the Dreadnought and one of the Vindicators with buggy rokkits.



The Kans stomp all over the Librarian and move forward with everything else.




While the Grots on the far side of the boadr hold the objective they've been standing on all game!



In the Marine second turn, the Assault Terminators arrive and run to just outside Kan assault range...



The bikers move up and Melta the stompy Kans to wreckage.



And as you can see by this handy map, at the end of the second turn the advance on the left of the board has been slowed a bit, but the rest of the Grot army is unscathed and advancing quite close to the Marine base!




In the third Grot turn, the Kan wall advances again (again!) while the Grots move into the rubble near the bikers.




In the Marines third, combined fire from Multimeltas and Devastators takes out an entire squad of dangerously close Kans, while the Assault Terminators move out of cover and charge the final Kan squadron, wrecking two of them.




In the Grot fourth, the Megagrots and Mek assault the Terminators, but the Storm Shields do their job. The Terminators lose one, but three Megagrots die to Thunder Hammers.



The remaining buggies try to destroy the Razorback and disembarked squad, but only succeed in shaking it (again!)



And the second Mek and Grot squad on the left advance into the rubble and charge the bikers, killing one.




While the final Grot squad finally pass their reserve roll and run on 12" from the board edge, and the Terminators and Megagrots stay locked in combat with the final Kan.




In the Marine fourth, the Attack Bikes move up to the lone dread holding the central objective, shaking it and blowing off an arm.



While the second Tactical Squad join in the fight against the Mek and Grots on the left, wiping them out and consolidating onto the objective.




And the other Tactical Squad charge the Buggies, to no effect.



At the end of the fourth, the tables have turned a little and Kans are suddenly looking a bit thin on the ground.



The buggies break and try to contest objectives, while the Terminators wreck the final Kan and consolidate into the central garden, close to the late Grot squad.



But with all the Grot squads whittled down, the fifth Marine turn becomes a job of mopping up. The Razorback and Tactical Marines take out the final buggy on the right, while the Attack Bikes turn around and blow up the two Buggies making a break for it.




The Bike Squad takes out the central Deff Dread with Meltaguns while the Terminators charge the Grots, killing enough that they flee and can't regroup.




At the end of the fifth, there aren't really any Grot vehicles left functioning, so it seems silly to continue further



The Grotz hold one objective, while their last squad in the fight continues to flee




The Marines hold two objectives with Tactical Squads




While the centre objective isn't held by any Troops units. Marine victory!

Great armies and report. Bad matchup for the Grotz, with the marine anti-tank being on target and the assault terminators lying in wait the Kan Wall was doomed. Did the Kans shoot or run during their advance? Love the report, thanks.

nice use of asymetric terrain. recently, i've been pretty much setting up tables identically (or as close as possible) in my battle report games so as not to give any undue advantage to one play... but it ends up looking boring. nice overhead pic; it shows off the terrain well.

p.s. is the subject a typo or meant to sound like engrish?

p.p.s. some grot tanks would go well with those kans, btw.

yeah,
This game was Great. having played with Plaguemarines and Eldar for years I'm enjoying the low pts cost of the grots. I love outnumbering the enemy...
It's weird I feel indifferent when I lose Grot units. when playing Plaguemarines you feel every lose.
Losing a Kan is no big deal I've got more of those mate! plus I get to use my DeadKan Markers which means even when I was losing Kans I'm having fun!

My main problem in this game was I scored Low on all my MEks Difficult terrain tests (MegaGrots always move as if in difficult terrain) which meant that when the Kans run they left the safety of the KFF... I think I'm going to start thinking up new tactics or building a BattleWagon!

That was the plan. ArbitorIan knew the army I was going to use and he made his list rock hard to make the game as difficult as possible for the Grots... their egos have been getting to big lately.
TheKans Run every turn... that might have been a mistake, maybe I should have shoot every turn at things like the devestators. This is a new army for me and so far my 'tactics' of just lining them up and running them at the enemy has worked.

no, i think you heard wrong. they specialize in space corridors mainly.

Honestly Panic - have you no respect?

Every battle report on this forum has crap terrain, but not you. No, no! You have to go and have great looking terrain, a good amount of terrain, fancy buildings, interesting set ups and even just good terrain layouts - all to make everyone else look inferior.

It's your ego isn't it? You've just got to be better than everyone? You need to start playing on flat green tables with maybe a hill or a couple of trees like everyone else, and stop this "great battle report" nonsense.

Thanks - they're actually from the Void Junkers range - I used a load of them as Arbites shields and had a few left over. (I used the actual Junkers themselves to make my Suicide Legion Imperial Guard)

Thanks, Reece - though this is Panic's amazing terrain (Mine is the less-amazing grey stuff in some of the other reports.)
