We had a battle to see if my Tyranids (played by my brother) can beat my competitive Space Wolves. Now I haven't lost yet to nids with my puppies, but this tyranid list has a minimum number of slow monstrous creatures for my Jaws to target. In addition, it's got some mobility with 2 flyrants, gargoyles and trygons+ravenors that can deepstrike. Will they be able to give my puppies a challenge? We'll find out.

Now, the lists:

TYRANIDS

Hive Tyrant - Wings, 2x TL-Devourers, Hive Commander, Old Adversary, Leech, Paroxysm
Hive Tyrant - Wings, 2x TL-Devourers, Hive Commander, Old Adversary, Leech, Paroxysm

What do you think? Do the Tyranids stand a chance?

Battle report to come soon....

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Space Wolf army was the one I used at the 'Ard Boyz and that photo is out-of-date. I swear, that fruit is now a real drop pod.

Onto the battle:

Mission: Capture & Control

Deployment: Pitched Battle

Initiative: Space Wolves wins (thanks to the Emperor's Tarot) and makes Tyranids go first.

Tyranids win. 7 MC's with FnP will take forever for fangs/godhammer to kill. All those meltas and combi's need to be in Trygon threat range to use. No CC powerhouses for the Wolves to counter with.

Flying dakkarants and HG > all those rhinos and pods.

Layer with max spacing and JoTWW pods will be pushing to hit tervigons in the center of the swarm, if they pass SiTW.

No Storm Shields? 6 normal power weapons against an army of almost all t6? Really? Most of those fists won't survive to swing. Trygons and Dakkarants eat marines all day long.

At least that's how I'd play it.

Nids look nice.

Anyway, I think nids are gonna win, be wary of JotWW. I think nids are gonna win.

Also, if the Long Fangs don't get taken care of, your Trygons are going to get really hurt (btw, why no trygon prime?)

nice bat rep, nids did well, but obviously could not handle that amount of marines. BTW, not sure who setup that table, but that was a shooting gallery for space wolves, that is no where near 25% terrain, and certaintly doesnt include any LOS blocking terrain.

Also, I think tervigons were over-hyped by the interwebs. Ive read many many many bat reps where they crap out on turn 1, and gants take nothing to kill off, so only have 20 gants, plus the 20 or so more you get isnt great, especially when you need to footslog it.

Which is my next point, capture control is almost lose fest for nids, unless they can spod it onto yours or outflank.

I felt the tyranids made a mistake by not casting FNP on the 1 flyrant that was visible (though with cover) to my long fangs. If that flyrant hadn't died, I might not have gone aggressive and assaulted his gargoyles.

Terrain was ok by the both of us, as we took turns placing the terrain. A good nid list does not need to rely on terrain. It actually hurts them by slowing them down. They use termagants as the front rank to provide cover for hive guards and tyrant guards. Tyrant guards, in turn, provide cover for hive tyrants (though in this case, he had no tyrant guards). Finally hive tyrants and hive guards provide cover for tervigons. Trygons pop out and try to overload 1 flank. It is all about synergy for the nids.

Tervigons are useful as support units. They are not really an offensive unit, but are vital in providing synergy for the rest of the nids to feed off of. I always try to take at least 1. Also, it was the termagants who shot down my 2 rune priests, so this game, the gants actually did very well.

On the contrary, C&C is probably the strongest mission for the nids. They are strong because of all those T6 units, tervigons who spawn more troops and hive guards that'll shoot down anything not a land raider or monolith. Then trygons pop out to wreak havoc on enemy objectives while the rest of the army advance and shoot. And because there's so many monstrous creatures, enemy tanks don't want to be anywhere close to them.

Yeah, FnP is vital on your rants to keep them kicking... 4 wounds, and without armored shell the missiles will dominate them :(

Great game overall tho! how did your pod mishap? they never mishap!

With regards to my pod. I guess I tried to deepstrike near his objective but rolled high on the scatter so that the pod went partially off the board.

Ah makes more sense! Just a tip to your bro, I'd suggest cutting the HT's down a notch, that was like 600+ points on 2 models @_@ I only like a tyrant for his boost to my army, not his killiness!

I, on the other hand, think that the tyrant is the killiest unit in the nid codex. However, the question is their durability. That's why I don't like wings on them. I much prefer giving each one 1 tyrant guard screened by some termagants. That just makes them much more resilient, especially if you FNP them with the tervies. Not to mention they become a fire magnet, thus giving the rest of the army enough time to get close.

Winged tyrant is way too expensive. Why can't it get wings for 20 points like say the Demon Prince? I don't know. But I agree with jy2, Hive Tyrant on the ground w/ 2 TL devourers works incredibly well. I don't usually use guard mainly because I try to make everything else menacing too so my opponent is confused at what to shoot, but hey if it works it works

The only time a flyrant works is when....wait, you'll see in the rematch battle report coming soon. Heh, heh....

Unfortunately, the trend now is more expensive wings. Chaos Daemons Daemon Prince wings also cost 60.

Dakkarants w/1 tyrant guard are one of my favorite units. They can do so much damage against infantry and light transports.

I wasn't saying you were. And there's nothing fruity about bell peppers!

I had no intention of insulting your army for not buying another drop pod. Personally, I hate the idea of paying 35 dollars for a model that sits in the same spot for the whole game.

Actually that picture was taking when I was furiously preparing for the 'Ard Boyz. I didn't finish the last pod until the day of the event.

While many gamers have had late nights of furious painting before events, you've got an admirable resolve to finish painting your army in time for a "painting optional" event. My army was barely even WYSIWYG for 'Ard Boyz. I hope to have it retroactively fully painted by the end of this month. :-P

Anyway, great battle report! It must have sucked for you guys playing on the floor, but the ability to take overhead shots of the battlefield made the battle report much easier to follow. It helped communicate what went on during the movement phase, a phase that many battle reports almost entirely omit.

Thanks. There's pros and cons about not having a table. Overhead photos and not having to get the table+board is a plus. On the downside, checking LOS kinda sucks. Then again, we only have any 1 building as terrain which we use once in a while.

One of these days, I want a rematch against your mechguards with my wolves.

I agree that they're both powerful and controversial, which is why I only field them in 'Ard Boyz-style events. But they're not illegal, other than in the sense that any TO or venue manager can set local restrictions.

This has come up on Dakka several times before. (Search YMDC.) It's a very tenuous argument that would never be made if Inquisition allies were underpowered, or even properly balanced. It is born not from a good-faith arguments about the rules, but from nerdrage that Mystics and unlimited-range Psychic Hoods are stupid. (And they are indeed stupid, but that's not the issue...)

Actually, you still can. GW made a statement that if you are using the original DH/WH codices, that what's contained therein, including the rules for allies, still applies. However, if you only have the .pdf version and not the original, then you are out of luck. The online codex does not supercede the original. Basically, you can use allies if your codex allows for it.
