so here's my IoB stuf so far - not too much progress, it has to be said, but being back at school has cut into my leisure time somewhat... ; )

Rat Ogres - just way too cool not to paint, even though I'm doing the High Elves as my army. Here we have Pinky and The Brain... er, I mean Boneripper and Boneripper...
I want it to look as if they're leaking warpfire, so lots of green into the scars and joins.

Sword Master: they work out of the White Tower, so an obvious scheme is to do them white, plus it's an obvious link to Eldar Banshees, which again is too cool not to do. Probably a mistake not to drybrysh and instead highlight individual scales, but I'll get quicker... I'm thinking that they've got armour carved out of ivory or something like that...

The new set has got me interested in Fantasy for the first time in a very long time - I'll be interested to follow your progress.

Can we have some commentary on colours and techniques as you go?

Now Pinky and The Brain are way too cool not to comment on. They are such lovely models, I got my hands on just the one with the warpstone steam powered sword hand thing (mouth full). The blood bowl looking ones back is great and the green scars really work. Did you build the skin up using just washes of dev mud and ogryn flesh over white?

Nice idea with the sword master too. The bone armour looks really nicely blended.

: )
thank you all for the positive comments, they're much appreciated

paint schemes:
Sword Master: I gave him a base of dheneb stone with a little charadon granite and a little snakebite leather - charadon to darken it and the snakebite to give it a bit of warmth.
No wash, which is unusual for me, and then I just highlighted with bleached bone and then white. As usual when I do that sort of blending, the layers are very, very thin, so patience is required. The robes I did scab red then a wash of leviathan purple - I think I'll leave it like that, or perhaps minimal highlighting with scab.
The helmet hair I did blood red and then a couple of layers of baal red over the top, and then judicious use of leviathan purple for deeper shadows. His hair I did dark flesh and then a wash of ogryn flesh - I'll do a couple more washes to get it nice and deep.

Rat Ogre 1:
did the scars with a 1:1 mix of scorpion green and golden yellow. Let that dry and then a wash of thakka green. His fur/flesh so far is a bit of an experiment, but was graveyard earth with a wash of devlan mud, but I was a bit messy when I washed the scar, so I just did thakka over the lot and I quite like it. I'll do some highlights in graveyard as well. Bandages are just a liberal wash of gryph sepia over the white undercoat. Muzzle and tail got a couple of washes of ogryn flesh.
His armour was a layer of tin bitz followed by a wash of badab black. Then I really watered down some hawks turquoise and painted that on, letting it pool in a few places. then I added a little bit of scorpion green to the turquoise and did the same - very thin and painting it on rather than doing a liberal wash. I might go in and do a couple of highlights with bronze, but not too much as I like it dark and grungy.

Rat Ogre 2: pretty much the same as the other one for the warpstone and the piping - same mix of scorpion green and golden yellow followed by thakka washes. I drybrushed the warpstone chunk with some of the same green:yellow mix and then added some white to do a final drybrush layer. Sword arm thing is one layer of bronze at the moment. It'll do a wash of badab and maybe one of devlan, then the tuquoise befoer some highlights. I want him to be a bit brighter and more steampunky.

Loving the paintjob on these, especially the warpstone-y and metal tones! May have to hijack your paintscheme for the warpstone!

btw how did you do the faint glow on the scars, in fact just give me the whole warpstone recipie! (I've read the bit on the inside of the scars)

[puts on Nigella Lawson voice]

Warpstone: 1:1 mix of scorpion green and golden yellow, follwed by a thakka wash. Drybrush with the original green:yellow mix, then another layer of that with some white added in as a highlight.

the glow on the scars was a bit of a happy accident - I painted them the same green:yellow mix, failry liberally so it wasn't just in the recesses, then a wash of thakka, which darkened the recess, but left the ridges quite light, then I was just a bit careful when I did the base of graveyard earth and left some of the green showing : )

redscorps - thank you for your very kind praise!

Trilobite: I watered down the turquoise a lot, so it's probably a little thinner than the washes, and then painted it on in thin, even coats, letting it pool in some areas. Then I added a bit of scorpion green to the mix to change the colour and give it a bit more depth and repeated the process. It takes a few layers of it to build up the colour, so a bit of patience is needed. I concentrated on the back of the shoulderpad, so that's why the blue is more noticable there.

man, how dull is unit-painting? Not too much progress as I'm suffering from a man-cold, but I'm getting there slowly with the swordmasters, and a bit better with The Brain. Washes still a bit wet in some of the shots!

I also thought I'd try using my brain for once and plan ahead. I liked how the warpstone went on Pinky and thought I'd try the same process on my HE mage for some directional lighting from a couple fo the gems. So I've done the 'light' first and plan to blend in with the base colour for the staff... we'll see how it goes!
