Subject: Reanimating The Legion - 18th April - Libby dread
|
 |

As my Skave project rolls close to completion (updates soon) I've been testing several different ideas for a new conversion army project.
and the winner is... The Legion of the Dammed... why? well I got my hands on a bunch of stunning OOP Legion mini's and I have begun restoring them and rebuilding them into a fighting force.
Understandably I will be unable to use them in anything other than friendly matches and they will be highly restricted in troop choice as in no choice tactical only, no vehicles, no dreads no nothing.
I just love the flames and bones and the prospect of converting a commander, bases & weapons really appeals to me.
so anyway here are some shots of the soon to be renewed OOP troops.
Marines including 3 Sarg's all form 1998 and before
packs weapons and pads
and so the quest to re-animate these legionaries begins!

No wait! You know this means you will have to build a DIY chapter for the Legion boys to run with right?

yep DIY chapter is where I'm going with it pricy units but damn (excuse the pun) near un-killable on the down side you'll get 20 Legion Vs 50 normal marines or some hundreds of Nids and Orks but it will make a damn impressive fight!

Chapter Name: The Legion of the Damned Formerly the Fire Hawks
Homeworld: Zhoros - destroyed
Primarch: Roboute Guilliman
Chapter Master: N/A
Commander in charge of Assault: Brother Captain Furii
Founding: N/A
Founding Chapter: Ultramarines
In the year 963 of the current millennium, Space Marines of the Fire Hawks chapter were ordered to join imperial forces within the boundaries of the Crows World sub-sector.
Crows World and it's adjacent planetary systems had recently fallen into anarchy following heavy raiding by Eldar Pirates, Skave infiltrators and other alien presences. It was the
Fire Hawks mission to intervene and drive the alien from the human worlds, restoring Imperial rule and teaching the invaders an important lesson.
The entire chapter-fleet, including the chapter's mobile space-fortress, made a successful warp jump from the Piraeus system a mere 120 light years from Crows World.
The five ships, nearly one thousand brethren, and some two thousand non-combatant personnel and ships crew were expected to reach Crows World within no more than 12 hours.
They never arrived.
Twenty years after the event the chapter was officially declared lost in the warp and presumed destroyed. Within the gilded halls of holy Terra the great Bell of Lost Souls
tolled a thousand times, it's resounding echo heard across the system. It is said that the Emperor himself ordered a single Black Candle to be lit in honor of the Fallen Heroes never to be extinguished.
RIP Fire Hawks: The Emergence of the Legion
On 9667986.M41 a routine Imperial patrol passed through the Ork held system of Jakor-tal. The squadron uncovered altogether unexpected scenes of devastation.
The limited facilities available to the patrol could uncover no clue to the identity of the attacking forces. The incident was noted and passed into the everlasting record of the Administratum.
Reports continued to surface of similar incidents spanning many Imperial sectors which soon aroused the interest of the Inquisition.
Squadron commanders throughout these sectors were instructed to reinforce their defenses and ordered to double their routine patrols.
As time passed reports of these seemingly random incidents continued to flow into the administratum. Yet with each report came no clue as to the forces involved or the threat they may pose to Imperial systems.
It was then almost a year later. An Imperial shipping patrol cruiser in the Maran sub-sector narrowly avoided a collision with a space-craft at the Cift jump-point.
Angered and concerned by the close encounter, they scanned the outbound vessel further alarmed and fearful by the result swiftly transferred the information to a nearby
Inquisitorial outpost who confirmed the identity of the ship as the "Promethean" an assault cruiser registered to the Fire Hawks, video evidence collected by the
patrol turned up several disturbing images, the Cruiser seemed as though damaged and on fire with harsh battle burns and tears which nearly completely blackened the hull of the craft,
more gruesome still was the lack of imperial iconography replaced instead by morbid images of death, skulls and flame and bone.
The Army List so far;
Brother Captain Furii
Command Squad
Stern-guard lead by Brother Sargent Centurius
3 x Legion Squads each with one heavy and one special weapon
Keeping in mind this is not a by the book army and only for fun games, the legion will not have access to Assault squads, bikes, transports, tank, droppods, scout squads, landspeeders, terminators squads or Dreads
each unit will costs 65 points above the normal unit cost (this is worked out through the use of the SM codex and main rule book comparing points cost for similar abilities and unit types then taking the largest total possible add on amount which
was 65 points) conferring the Legions special rules and armor save. Making them a very small force of very hard to kill soldiers
I have stripped the old models of paint and resprayed in black primer, I will be test painting a marine tonight so pics soon!

I sure did 24 of them in fact and 3 bolt pistols
one of the Sarg's is a limited edition model as well with a combi weapon and bone helm
Here's the test paint (I really need to get my camera's running all of the detail i.e. the 5 layers of colour on the bone are just gone on my phones cam
anyhoo.
I still need to do more here I'm trying to find a good way to highlight them without into erupting the black so I'm going with damage instead once done and together I hope to have them based on grass which will be dead in the shape of footsteps behind them and flame/smoke coming form the underside of each foot where it touches the ground oh and I just ran out of Devlan mud wash so hmm stuck without washing for detail grab as well which sucks as I was hoping that would really bring out the bone!

I have seen a thread with blue flames, they look frightening...
Of course the official scheme is nice,(and well executed for now!) but it could appeal to you...
As for the army list :
Wasn't there a LotD army list in a WD some few years ago? They had access to Dreads, Rhinos, and all sorts of things...
Isn't there a LotD Squad entry in the current Codex? Why not use that point value, you would have less arguments?
Good luck!

Yeah I'm a big fan of the blue flame but for this one I'm going to keep it to the tradition I feel I owe it to the classic mini's.
and yes there was and they did and there is.
That is yes in WD there was an entry for them I came 3rd place in a local tourney with the list back then they were unstoppable really fun! but and it's a big but GW has listed the damned in the new codex (which answers the next question) they are a glorified troop choice from the elites section, the list explains their way of entering a battle (not by vehicle but by just appearing) and the Apocalypse list that was (no longer) on the UK GW site had them as an army of troops not even a command squad unable to take any form of support (they don't need it by the way).
My list is an amalgam of these entries with the addition of a command squad and SM Captain I find it hard to believe that there would be zero leadership in a marine army but I can understand not having a chapter master. I'm umming and arrring about a dread option but to be honest the basic maintenance they could get there hands on would not bode well for a dread in the long run.
The legion in my eyes are like Imperial loyal versions of the Thousand sons, that is they are both dust trapped in armor well not quite dust but dead flesh and bone animated by the will of the Emperor, loyal soldiers even in the after life, spirits in the machine.
This version fits perfectly with the eye witness accounts of glowing, burning and smoking warriors that seem to appear out of a deathly fog to exact the Will of the God Emperor and punish it's adversaries. They are also not known to speak or attempt to communicate with any force at any time and fate seems to keep discovery from ever landing at their feet, it's too much to be SM zombies or slowly dying Fire Hawks as some sites would have you believe.
These guys are Deathly Spirits of vengeance out for the blood of any who would push imperial forces/civilizations to the brink. They appear as if from nowhere with weapons spewing forth flaming shells of wrath and disappear without a trace or word.
They either have the fastest ships in the Universe or there is a supernatural element to them I'm a fan of the later.
Under these circumstances and the conditions of their demise I can not see them having the need for such things anymore, dreads and tanks bring no benefit to the army at this point but I'm open to debate Automatically Appended Next Post: Ok so I finished the paint tester guy here's some shots hopefully with better lighting!
C & C welcome but all in all I'm pretty happy with the turn out.

Nice work, I would suggest maybe use some deep black shading (dark blue/grey to really make the black pop). Also maybe thin down the black and do two layers of the black, I've painted quite a few of the old pewter models of the same era and I notice that if the paints not very thin then it makes the bumps/divits/notches on the marines flat surfaces really stand out :(. It's a hazard but it's totally worth it for the awesomeness of some of these models.
On a related note, do you actually have the model for centurius? If you do, I believe I will have a melt down.. I've been looking for him for an age and I would eagerly trade a kidney/lung/northern hemisphere of my brain/testicle for him! Also as a side note, I'm pretty sure he's the highest living ranked marine in LoTD, there was a WD article that stated all other leadership had died off and he was the quasi-leader. Fairly certain it was the same issue that featured him as the limited edition model and gave the full rules for the animus malorum (sp?) which was in the 190's somewhere?.

I'm using a black/codex grey mix for the shading (started after you suggest it so thanks) and yes the detail on the suits is popping out more rather than a jet black detail-less man shaped blob
I have also switched to using a thicker paint on the base black for that very reason oh and Welcome on board

Me too ... I think that's why I'm building them because of how much fun I feel they'd be to play and to play against, Welcome to the Damned
Update Sarg near finished needs basing.
The customized banner turned out pretty nice I think so did the new plastic old style shoulder.
hmm it's not really showing but they do have green eyes (dark angel green then Narloc then a sunburst yellow glint but again my super dodgy camera work loves to delete detail). Automatically Appended Next Post: Update Brother Captain Furii
The model is a Forge World Red Scorpions Termination Captain/Chapter Master
I have removes the RS icons and GS bone and flame to the model, now to be honest
I've done better flame in my time and may redo this later down the track but for now he'll do just nicely.

Sounds like a really interesting project Santobell, looking forward to seeing it come to fruition! Love the progress sor far. I think I might have a figure for you... it's an antique (RT era) beakie with a plasma gun and hand flamer... with a giant skull on his left shoulder pad. No other iconography, but then they didn't do a lot of that in the early days.

Cheers Git and that beakie sounds excellent!
I'm working on an idea to cast the chests of a couple and then mod them to fit the new SM plastic legs then recast so I have a repeatable multi part marine (and mod some weapons and shoulders to do the same) or at least cast some accessories for them like a strip of flame that fits on a shoulder pad that sort of thing... hmm not sure. what do you think?
Oh and I will be picking up at some point a box of the new LoTD mini's to use as my command squad and convert the veteran Sergent to Centurius.

I have them on my wish list thanks for pointing me at them! I have two chaos metla's already form friends all are old metal ones with nice bones and jagged ridges so hopefully that will do, I really only need one extra special wepaon (having gotten hold of two LoTD Flamer mini's already)
Question for anyone;
I'm trying to keep a tactical feel to the army that is no dedicated assault troops and a low tech aspect which is why there's no LR's or Dreads and zero recruits so no scouts would anyone object to heavy weapon squads and if so what other units would be considered as ok in your eyes??

I just looked them up in my 1998 mini catalog and yes they do and yes they would be cool ... issue... no ones got one.
There is a store nearby called Tactics that often has old mini's for sale some painted some metal/plastic I'll check out whats there next time I'm in the city they may well have something useful.

Some of the older GW models have so much character in them, like these guys or the old Space wolves techpriest or the original Death Master Snitch I can never understand why they do away with some of them instead of just reworking the old design that worked the first time... Often the new models feel like they are new simply for the sake of it and are just poor knock-off's of the old ones (don't get me wrong some of the new stuff is amazing as well).

Yes indeed I've been meaning to do this for a while I'm scanning Ebay at the moment daily for affordable OOP options for the army and there are a few starting to appear, I would love to get hold of an actual Sgt Centuius... I used to have him but that was so long ago I have no idea where it is now probably sold off or traded or lost.

Welcome it's good to have you here!

Since the club already has a newer techmarine I would be happy to swap for some random SM bits ( I would just give it to you bro but I would feel guilty) ?
Let me know what you think

SantoBell - great work, have just read the thread and will be subscribing.
am new to using any sort of Forum but am now glad i did. I have decided also to 'reanimate' the legion, i expect to start a thread this week of my project. Giving thought to models i have decided that i will be having a full army available including assault squads and terminators, if it just for fun then why not? obviously terminators dont require much extra points add on for the extra inv. save however been trying to work out how my assault squad could work with the slow and purposeful rule?????? any ideas would be great.
I have that Old techmarine and librarian model as well as a few other RT pieces that look to old for my marines, they are gonna be sent to hell and back to my army!
Looking forward to more posts dude!
