Transmitted: Doran
Received: Astropath Xavier
Destination: Inquisitor Lord Antonio
Mission Time: 151870.M41
Telepathic Duct: Terminus Octavius
Author: Captain Malec of the 271st Inquisitorial Storm Trooper Company
Thoughts of the Day: Hope for the best, but prepare for the worst.

“My Lord, I cannot take anymore of this. These voices… inside my head… they are telling me to do unspeakable things. Day and night they bombard me with forbidden desires. I fear I’ll lose my sanity and become possess. It’s not just me. This morning my commissar had to execute eleven good men. They were normal one minute, and the next minute they are shooting fellow soldiers in the back crying, “Glory for Chaos!” I fear in a day or two, I’ll reach my limit and join their ranks. With this message, I resign as captain of the 271st Inquisitorial Storm Trooper Company. Farwell, my Lord, it has been a privilege serving you.”

.....

The video recording ended with Captain Malec cocking his Hellpistol to his head. Both Canoness Dianus and Inquisitor Lord Antonio look away before Captain Malec pulls the trigger. The video recording ends.

“It seems the situation on the Doran is graver than we thought,” said Antonio.

“What was the nature of Storm Trooper Company’s mission,” inquired Canoness Dianus.

“Search and rescue,” replied Antonio, “A month ago, Inquisitor Cole, a good friend of mine, was exploring planet Doran for a rumored witch-cult. In his last transmission, he mentions finding ancient ruins predating to M38. After that, all communications from Inquisitor Cole cease. Fortunately, his locator beacon was still working. I dispatched the 271st Inquisitorial Storm Trooper Company to retrieve Inquisitor Cole, but I underestimated the strong influence of the ruinous powers.”

Antonio punch in a few key on his dataslate, replacing the frozen image of Captain Malec’s remains with a picture of a green luscious planet. “This is Doran, a back water country located on the fringes of Rubicon Straits,” informed Antonio.

“Your mission is to rescue Inquisitor Cole. As of now we must assume the 271st Inquisitorial Storm Trooper Company is compromised. They are not resilient as Adepta Sororitas are to the influence of Chaos.”

“Ave Imperator,” replied Canoness Dianus.

.....

Two days had passed since the Order of Faith made planet fall. By that time Canoness Dianus had made contact with the 271st Inquisitorial Storm Trooper Company. Only a handful of Storm Troopers and the Company Commissar resisted the allure to Chaos. The Order of Faith quickly purges the tainted using holy promethium and blessed Bolters.

A day later, the Order of Faith set off to find the lost Inquisitor. To cover more ground, Dianus ordered her forces to split into two groups.

.....

“All vehicles halt,” commanded Dianus. She opens the top hatch and peers outside. A warm breeze swept past the Canoness carrying the scents of the planet’s exotic plants and green vegetation. A golden sun illuminated the sky with an orange glow, basking the land in warmth. While the landscape appeared to be a paradise, something didn’t feel right.

“All units, assume defensive formation,” ordered Dianus.

As soon as the words left her mouth, all hell broke loose. The landscape morph into a putrid swamp, the trees limbs twisted in odd angles. Multiple warp rifts forms around her convoy. A giant two-headed bird-like Greater Daemon steps out, flank by three grotesque monsters. Each of them bear large Daemonic wings with feathers shifting different spectrum of the rainbow. A loud shriek rips through the air as sky sharks flies out of a portal follow by a group of twisted Daemons burning incandescently with the flames of mutation. Red lesser Demons wielding two-handed dark razor edge swords skitter out of the warp, shrieking battle cries for the blood god.

“Daemons,” growls Dianus, “I should have known.” Of all the enemies she fought, she dreaded Daemons the most. They are the embodiment of every man and women nightmare. They are cunning and mysterious like the enigmatic Eldar, brutal like the warmongering Orks, and Monstrous equal the horrific Tyranids. Worst of all, they are unpredictable. They would appear and disappear from the warp. They could infiltrate the minds of psykers, and like cancer, spread chaos within. They are everywhere, and yet appear out of nowhere.

“Group Beta,” she said in her vox, “secure Inquisitor Cole. Group Alpha, fight by my side! We will smash these Daemons out of existence.”

Game result: Draw!

.....

The air is filled with the clatter of Bolters, human shrieks, and Battle Sisters hymns. The first line of defense fell in minutes of the attack. Daemon Princes tore through the Sisters’ vehicles armored hull as if it were thin paper. They spew toxic mutagenic vapors, dissolving armor and flesh. Whole squads of Celestians were wiped out as the Daemonic acid ate through Power Armour and dissolve their flesh.

In return, the Sisters retaliated with a hail of explosive bolters and searing jets from their Meltaguns. However, the Daemon juggernauts are impervious to the Sister’s attacks. Fate Weaver’s aura made all the Daemons more resilient to normal weapons.

“Focus on the Greater Daemon,” commanded Dianus.

Obeying their Canoness, an Exorcist unleashes a salvo of rockets streaking towards the Lord of Change. A cacophony of explosions ripples around the Greater Daemons invulnerable shields. Finally one rocket gets through, blowing off one of the Greater Daemon’s heads. The other head let out an earsplitting shriek before it retreats back into the warp.

‘Finally,’ thought Dianus, ‘with their leader gone, the Daemons will fight amongst themselves for leadership.’ To her horror the Daemons appeared unfazed. A loud crack announces the arrival of another Daemon materializing from the warp. Unlike the others, this one was had a lithe feminine figure and wore a golden mask. She dances gracefully giggling with glee. Dianus couldn’t help but watch her. Suddenly Dianus’s body started moving on its own, dancing to the allure of Slaanesh. Other Sisters fell under Masque’s spell.

With many defenders under the Herald’s control, the rest of the Daemons smash through the Sister’s remaining defenses. A large Daemon Prince knocks Dianus to the side and starts bashing an Exorcist to pieces.

With her body still under Masque’s control, all Dianus could do was watch the rest of her forces crumble to pieces.

“So this is how it ends,” grumbled Dianus, “I die dancing like a joy girl on Emperor’s Day rather than fighting to the bitter end.”

With the last of the Sister vehicle smash to sunders, the three Daemon Princes turns their attention towards Dianus. One of them stalks towards Dianus and raises its enormous sword. Dianus braces herself.

Without warning, another warp rift opens up in-between the Daemon Prince and Dianus.

“Great mutters,” Dianus, “more Daemons.”

The Daemon Prince stops and looks at his brothers in bewilderment. Suddenly Fifteen Grey Knights lead by a Grand Master charges out the warp rift and assaults the Daemons. Their Nemesis Force Weapons slices left and right, penetrating the Daemon’s unnatural shields. In a matter of seconds, two of the Daemon Princes is butchered to pieces and banished back into the warp.

The foot soldiers of Khorne and Nurgle rush to their ally’s aid. Four of the Grey Knights levels their Incinerators and sprays the lesser Daemons with a mixture of consecrated promethium and blessed oils. A bright light engulfs the Daemons, reducing them to ashes. The last Daemon Prince flies into the air and tries to escape. The Grand Master hoists his Psycannon, pointing straight at the Daemon Prince, and fires bolts of negative psychic energy, vaporizing it out of existence.

With the last of the threats neutralized, the Grand Master turns his attention towards Dianus. “Tell your Inquisitor Lord we are even,” said the Grand Master. He and his Grey Knights leaves the same way they came, exiting through their warp rift.

"Canoness, we've found Inquisitor Cole," vox in Veteran Sister Superior Cath, "awaiting further orders."

Canoness Dianus whispers a silent prayer, thanking the Emperor, before voxing back to Group Beta.

"Mission accomplished, rendezvous at the extraction point."

A nicely-presented report, and a handsomely painted Sisters army.

It looks as though the daemon player put together a more-or-less token effort to take the Sisters' objective -- making a draw nearly inevitable.

Although to be fair, playing daemons in a capture and control mission against a mech-castled army makes anything less than an all-out, fully marshaled and tightly synchronized assault on an objective suicidal. Trying to mount a defense of the daemon objective with the elements of a second wave arriving uncertainly, unevenly, in multiple turns, would have been difficult, possibly futile.

And it was instructive watching a concentrated force of daemons taking apart the castle guarding the Sisters' objective.

That's a nice report with some good pictures. Too about about that brutal luck with wounding :\ Looks like it was a fun battle though.

I may be wrong but I'm pretty sure objectives have to be 12" from a board edge they are not allowed to be placed in a corner.

Wow...that battle was probably only my 2nd or 3rd game with my daemons. My army has changed significantly since then.

Here is my tactical insight into this game.

12 vehicles, of which most were fast.

My AT? Some monstrous creatures, furiously charge bloodletters, 1 bolt of Tzeentch and some screamers.

Basically, my army was ill-equipped to handle all-out MSU mech lists. I'd basically have to chase his tanks around, most likely hitting on 6's. This army was a nightmare for mine.

Rather than splitting my forces into 2 - 1 offense and 1 defense, I decided to go aggressive and concentrate everything onto his objective. Screamers and late dropping plagues would try to contest my own objective, while the majority of my army annihilate anything on his.

I put my objective far away, hoping that he would split his forces and make my job a lot easier. As I anticipated, he did. Other than Fateweaver dying so early, I had some good rolls and was able to annihilate half of his army with about 3/4 of my army. Unfortunately, I just wasn't able to contest my own objective, as the other half of his army was on it.

I'd take the draw. Kinda expected it with Capture and Control. However, the next time we face, it'll be a much different army with bloodcrushers and maybe even some fiends. Anyways, it'll be much more capable to handle mech armies.

You are thinking of Seize Ground mission. In Capture and Contro missionl, objective can be place anywhere in the the player's deployment zone as long as it isn't in impassible terrain or within 24" of the enemy's objective.

I was surprised with 3 daemon princes + bloodletters that daemons didn't just start quickly overrun the position, but hitting on 6s is a huge pain. (I'm eldar I count on it being so)

I'm keeping my fingers cross. I hope they get a new codex after Daemon Hunters.
