Night Haunters Guard
(Image Heavy Thread)

The Plan
My current plan is to actually use the Sanguinary Guard models as the basis of this army in addition to blatantly stealing their rules. Since the Army will be very elite, and their appearance will be very ornate, I’ve decided that these aren’t just any old Night Lords, these will be the Night Haunter’s Guard! This force will represent the personal guard of the Night Haunter himself, hand picked by him in the time before the Heresy. I’ll need to make a new model to represent “Commander Dante” in a suitably evil looking form to lead them, with a new name to be chosen later. As for their story…

The Story
While much of the Night Lords legion fell to the temptations of Chaos and the power it brings, the Guard stayed above the temptations available, maintaining their armor and the purity of their Geneseed with a nearly religious fervor. They knew they were the best of the best, and would not be tempted with simple promises of power. Now this isn’t to say that they are “Good” Night Lords, not at all. In fact they revile the Emperor and the Imperium with every ounce of their being, for they were forced to literally step aside as the Emperor sent an assassin kill their beloved Primarch. It’s something they’ll never forget or forgive. Over time though, they’ve found uses for their demonically tainted brethren and aren’t opposed to using them as sacrificial shock troops to distract the enemy as they make their own approach on ancient wings.

So right now it’s Looking like the majority of the army will consist mostly of Sanguinary Guard (Night Haunter’s Guard), and I may include a few Vanguard Veteran squads (Possessed Looking Marines) to engage the enemy early and give the incoming Guard a chance without getting ripped apart.

It might be hard to tell in the pictures, but I've either filed off the Blood Drops, or filed them down so they resemble gems more than Blood drops.
Also, there's alot of feathered wings, which I think will be fine, I'll still end up painting them red like proper Night Lord's wings should be. Besides, I like the look.

Anyway, I'll be updating this as I work on stuff, probably once or twice a week.

Interesting approach. I had an idea like this a while back, however I was going to use the Tyranid Gargoyle wings and helmets/shoulders from FW Khorne Berzerkers and paint them a dull brass. I like this though, good job.

Need a clue? Check the sprue.

Im actually doing the something similiar with my Night Lords, except I liked the concept of the Axe master and Talon master in the Lord of Night Novel...

they look good, but i just think that the feathered wings rather than bat-style wings clashes with the Night Lords basic design too much. the Night Lords logo is a skull with bat wings - using all those feathers just makes them not look like Night Lords, even if you do paint them in the Night Lords colors.

i would suggest using the Gargoyle wings, like the above poster did, and using GS to change the Blood Angel iconography of feathered wings to bat-style.

Wow. Ok, you convinced me.

Well, I'm not opposed to changing direction a little. They're still new enough and I've only got three assembled at this point. So I've spiked them up a little (not too much, mostly just the top of the jetpacks), paid better attention to shaving the Blood drops off completely (put a spike in place of the powerfist blood drop), and most importantly, I'm heading to the store right now to look into buying some Gargoyles. I'll take the Angelic wings off the jump packs and see how they look with the Gargoyle wings instead. =)

Thanks for the great feedback!

i am going to be starting an Angels Encarmine force, which is a Blood Angel successor chapter which has a bat-wing+blood drop logo instead of a feathered wing+blood drop logo, so i've been thinking about this. i am going to try to re-do all the feather wing iconography with green-stuff to make it bat-style wings like the chapter's logo:

i am still on the fence about whether i should use gargoyle wings on the Sanguinary Guard or not. in the new BA codex, they show the Angels Encarmine Sanguinary Guard with regular feather-style wings (though painted black) so i don't know if i should go with what the codex says, or try to stay consistent with the bat-wing style...

After further thought and taking your comments into consideration, they've gone through some changes.

They've gotten spiked up some (on the jet packs), the model in the third picture now has a spikey chain hanging from the axe handle, and I think there was another change too...

Oh yeah!
They all got bat wings!

I liked the noble look they had previously, but you guys were right, I'd lost too much of the Night Lord look by keeping the angel wings. The Gargoyle Wing idea was just too brilliant to pass up, so I just rushed off to the store and bought some Gargoyles (I don't plan on rushing off to the store after every suggestion, lol).

Anyway, thanks for your comments!

Thanks for the kind words guys!

Here's the last two members of the first squad.

Next up, I'll either be painting these guys or creating the Night Priests (Sanguinary Priests).
I think I've decided that only the models actually equipped with Artificer armor should have the Sanguinary Guard bodies.
So I'd want a way for the priests to still seem special. Right now I'm considering starting with either the Aspiring Champion torso (with the chainmail loincloth) or ordering up some of the ribcaged torsos from the possessed sprues to give them a unique feel. I haven't decided yet... What do you guys think?

My wife approved my budget for this project, so I put in an order with thewarstore.com for 5 Sanguinary Guard boxes, 3 Tyranid Gargoyle boxes, and 2 Possessed boxes, in addition to a variety of bits needed for the project.
I also ordered 3 more Night Lords conversion kits from GW, AND I just visited my local game store (which is 45 minutes away) and bought a bunch of paints, and some fresh tools for this project.

My wife is saying that our apartment looks like it's covered in "snow drifts of bits". I've always worked on the floor (been doing it this way for 15 years) and I've claimed this corner of the apartment as my domain for this project.

Oh, by the way, the paints I bought were....

Necron Abyss (Base Coat)
Mechrite Red (For Wings)

Blood Red (For Wings)
Skull White (Mostly for the Lightning)
Chaos Black
Ice Blue (For putting behind the lightning)
Regal Blue (probably a heavy drybrush)
Dwarf Bronze (Trim)
Shining Gold (Trim)
Boltgun Metal (Gun barrels and other metal bits)
Bleached Bone (Skulls)
Scorched Earth (Basing Base Coat)
Graveyard Earth (Skull Base Coat and Basing Highlight)

I hope that covers everything I'll need, because I'd hate to have to drive back to the hobby shop for just 1 or 2 paints. >.<

I hope to have a test model painted up in the next couple of days to see if "my vision" will work, or turn out to be a disaster. >.>

Fascinating idea, and the execution is nice so far. Good call on keeping the Guard bodies for artificer armor- it's so much better to face counts-as forces when they're nice and clear about what's what.

I do have one suggestion: remove the Imperial iconography, and anything else involving feathered wings, from the figs. The stuff on the powerfist guy there is especially apparent. Not only does it remove elements that are too angelic, it will give you some nice open space for terror markings when you paint.

Infinity: Way, way better than 40K and more affordable to boot!

I love the Sanguinary guard models. I'm using them for my raptors too. Savnock's right though. Try to get rid of all the blood angel iconography. Although some of the purity seals are in painfully annoying spots. I do so love how the lapdogs of the emperor just throw them around in what appears to be a hap hazard willy-nilly fashion.

Yours look absolutely amazing thus far. Might be a bit late now, but any reason you're using the guns from the sprue? Would it play the same or no?

I've tried removing the feathers on a test model I'm working on and to be honest, it just hasn't turned out well so far, but I'm hoping after I prime and paint it, it won't look as noticeable. If it works out, great, I'll go back and try removing more of the feathers from the existing models. If not, I'll just have to paint them red like the bat wings and hope most people overlook them. >.<

I don't have too much faith in my filing skills.

I've already removed all of the Blood Drops, chalices, and purity seals I could find. Though I wouldn't be surprised if a blood drop or two turns up when I start painting. -_-

Thank you very much for the comments and feedback!

This is Bob the Test Model. Bob hates his life.

Bob was put together using some spare bits last night at like 3 in the morning because my dog woke me up and she insisted on running around the apartment looking for something, I have no idea what, for the next hour and a half. Bob here does not have a legal assortment of gear, I just wanted to test filing and painting both a sword and a powerfist. I just slapped an extra blank shoulderpad on him which I decided to paint mostly red just to test out the color balance and see if it’s be too much red on the shoulders or not. I was also too tired to actually care about filing down the purity seals or imperial eagle on his chest, I figured I’d just paint over them and pretend they weren’t there. Bob just exists to test out the paint scheme after all.

For the most part, I like how Bob the Test Model turned out. He’s a touch too bright blue, but that’s because I didn’t find my old bottle of enchanted blue until literally everything else had been painted, even the lightning, so I was trying to highlight around details without hitting anything else on accident, the result is a model that’s probably a little brighter blue than he would be if I’d done the highlighting earlier. *shrugs* Whatever. You’ll notice that there are some spots of messy painting, particularly around his belly, again, I didn’t care since he was just here to test out the overall feel of the paint scheme.

All in all, I think that this color scheme (if a slightly darker blue) will work just fine. What do you guys think?

I'm not entirely sold on the helm being painted like a skull, I'm not sure if I want to keep that look, or go with Blue helms on the final ones. Hmmm....

I would wonder how a Midnight Blue or something in that shade of blue would work out. Of course since Bob hates his life, it would be no surprise if he hates everything else too, hahaha. Just as a matter of opinion, I would also say dull down the gold or bronze (or what ever that bright color is) otherwise, from what i have seen it's a good job so far and a good concept. keep it up.

After thinking about it, I went ahead and Photoshopped Bob's head in the photo to see what it would look like Blue instead of painted skull-like, and I think I like the blue look better.

I wish I could actually use "test" models without them becoming full-time investments!

[edit : I liked the skull face, looks more scary, and helps to make the head a focus point.]
