Hey all, long time lurker first time poster.

Last night I began knocking together the humble beginnings of an Ork Gargant, a project I've been wanting to tackle for some time yet never truly gotten stuck into any further than half heartedly glueing a few scraps of card to an empty mini beer keg.

This time around I've done my homework and spent uncountable hours browsing Gargant builder sites and looking at other guys' efforts, some of which look AMAZING, others look like painted cardboard, I hope mine will fit snugly between the two.

Though I've made a great deal of spot terrain over the past fifteen years this will be my largest scratch built piece to date and will, in theory, also serve as terrain aswell as an Ork Super Heavy in large scale games like Apoc.

I won't go into any minute detail right now without pics to coincide because that would be long winded and boring for all of us! Rest assured my hot glue gun has already had quite the workout and the main body of the gargant is currently around 35cm tall (approx 14inches) meaning it's already towering over my GW Stompa. After adding feet, gunz, grabby claws and assorted shooty turrets and smoke stacks I'm sure this will be a MASSIVE hunk of Orkiness.

Sadly no pics to add yet because, well, I'm at work and pics are on my home PC. Fail. Will add pics ASAP.

Thanks for reading!

It's sure to be an interesting project - the mini beer keg idea went into the bin many years ago...

Onto bigger and stompier things!

As promised, here are a couple of work-in-progress shots.

Dunno if these pics are going to upload cos I'm new to this so any advice on uploading pics would be appreciated!

Me again - now that I know that the photos are loading here's a few more. Again bear in mind I am one day into this project!!

I began by making the rough shape of the body trying to steer clear of the 'inflatable looking' armourcast look and going for more kind of like the old Epic gargants; big and blocky. I plan on mounting a belly gun on it as you can see by the big black texta scribble in the pics. The arms will be done seperately and possibly be disconnectable for easy transportation. The paper cup head will be replaced by something more suitably Orky.

Onto

Haha, this looks like it'll be hilarious and awesome. I think you should stick with the plastic cup head. I love that.

Mostly, on my phone.

I love the idea behind this project, but I can I suggest - well, not an alternative exactly, but an idea:
Have you considered doing the main body in foam core? Will make for more long-term durability. You could treat the cardboard version as a test run, and replicate accordingly.

Also, for plates, maybe some A4 Plasticard (0.5mm or 0.3mm), chopping up randomly and tapping blunted nails into them for rivetty goodness?

Cardboard, even heavy duty cardboard, may not stay the distance; also, the greater rigidity afforded by foamcore would mean that you could detail the interior in far greater detail. Given the amount of time and effort you're going to be investing in this, it seems like it might be worth it. Just my tuppence, though.

I spent some solid hours over the weekend working on the Gargant and made some very definite progress. Pics to follow this evening when I return home!
Yesterday I was fortunate enough to have free reign over a good friend's expansive collection of gubbins. By expansive I mean it took up almost half of the floor space in a double car garage - boxes upon boxes of exciting and random pieces. This allowed me to really let my imagination run wild with a hot glue gun in my hand!

Anyway here is a list of the work that went into it over the weekend:

The model now has a pretty mean looking left arm consisting of an assortment of large guns and lots of flat areas for boyz/grots to stroll around on.

I added a belly gun slightly offset to the right just to be a bit more orky and ramshackle.

Began slapping together what was originally going to be an arm of some desciption but now feels more like it would look better as a shoulder mounted crane/lifta-droppa arm.

Stuck a metric ton of cardboard off-cuts onto the body to get a feel for what the patchwork metal plates will look like.

Made a nice swivelly head that has room in the jaw for some orks to stand about. No more paper cup head...

Made some stompy feet which could probably do with being a bit broader to stop any balance issues with the model. Don't want it toppling over during a huge game and ruining it for everyone!

Began working on the exposed engine area on the back. Essentially just a lot of piping and plastic bits slapped together at the moment though no doubt this will get more and more detailed and over the top as I go. I was toying around with the idea of having a gigantic V8 style engine block on the back but have since moved on from the idea.

I'll post some pics tonight - cheers!

Alrighty then, as promised, here are some pics from the work undertaken on the Gargant over the weekend.

I'm gonna break this up into two post, one tonight and one tomoorw cos today is my birthday and quite frankly I wanna do some partying!!

So here's the first post. All of these pics were taken in the morning before I went off and pillaged my friend's expansive bits collection. The next post will detail more of what I did in the afternoon.

Enjoy

STOMPY FEET - I've now decided that these will need to be MUCH bigger and MUCH stompier

[Thumb - IMG_1578.JPG]
More of the patchwork card off cuts, still not 100%on this but it's growing on me. I'd like to add more panels from rhinos and other GW kits

Coming on great! Have a look at ramshackle models stuff, they do packs of rivettu plates, steam pipes, and other junk (look in the tridlins section of the Shop). Love the swivel head too!

Cheers for the tip gravenimage - will have a look over there for ideas!

Here's the next post as promised. I raided my friend's sprawling collection of random bits and bobs and, with the aid of a hot glue gun, smashed together the bulk of the gun arm, the power pack/engine area and the right arm which may or may not yet become a crane style lifta/droppa arm . Keen eyes might spot the addition of the front grill off a 14 wheeler on the front of the model.

Comments and criticism welcome! Any ideas or advice would be much appreciated.

Cheers!
[Thumb - IMG_1580.JPG]
This was the beginning of the engine/power pack area on the rear of the model. I plan on expanding this to include much more indutrial parts, perhaps from a few old model car kits, etc. It's a start none the less

[Thumb - IMG_1582.JPG]
Front on view of the gun arm. Still a work in progress. I added a big gun to the platform on the top which can be seen better from different angles. Assorted tubes and other pipey objects serve as the massive guage cannons.

[Thumb - IMG_1581.JPG]
Ahhh there you can see the big gun on the platform. I made it from some sprinkler parts. The grating there was a test piece made from some gardening supplies. I covered the whole flat platform with it and was happy with the final result.

[Thumb - IMG_1583.JPG]
The arm that I made which is looking more like a crane than a big grabby claw. Leaning more towards using this as a shoulder mounted lifta/droppa arm

[Thumb - IMG_1584.JPG]
The head with grating added in the jaw for boyz to stompo around on. Added the eyes and a small exhaust pipe towards the rear

[Thumb - IMG_1586.JPG]
All the bits I've made a good start on so far. Slowly looking more and more like a gargant!

[Thumb - IMG_1587.JPG]
A blurry (oops) pic of how I am now imagining the lifta/droppa arm might sit on the shoulder. Placement in the back corner like that allows the head to still swivel 180 degrees. WINNING!

[Thumb - IMG_1585.JPG]

I guess only time will tell how the paint will look. I'm made a great deal of terrain out of card over the years and found the most effective way of disguising the cardboardy look is to give it a few stiff coats of primer. I've done some test panels where I sprayed the card board with silver aerosol paint and then given it a hefty wash of Devlan Mud.

If all else fails it looks like I'll be doing a whole lot of drybrushing Boltgun Metal over black.... GAH!!

I love that spot terrain. The Gargant is looking super cool. I really like the crane on, but it leaves that whole side to be toyed with. Do you have any plans for it yet?

I think the engine is far too small, unless it's just the power pack for the gun arm...

LEDs would look FANTASTIC but sadly I'm bnot electronically minded. Bit inept actually!

@Good Green - no plans for the right arm as yet. I'm still undecided between a massive claw, a huge oversized chainsaw or a hammer. I guess the possibilities are endless! What are your thoughts?

The engine is actually a bit more expansive than that picture shows. After that image was taken I added some piping that runs down the length of the body. On the back of the model I want to have tiered walkways/gantrys that would function in a similar manner to the COD terrain (ie, tiered at approx 3 inch intervals with enough width to allow for about 3 models deep).

Last night I dragged out my bits box and started clipping bits off sprues to eventually add to the model - LOTS O' GUNZ
