I'm a big advocate of paper terrain in my wargames. It is cheaper, faster to build and looks good on the table ( IMHO). Over the years I have learned how to create paper terrain via Photoshop for my mechwarrior games and I've decided to build some terrain for 40k.
This is my first Beta Build and it needs a few tweaks but otherwise represents the finished product. I need to work on the crenellations on top and get them to fit more closely together.
I normally use a box for internal support but I decided I would try this type of design. It works very well and is quicker than a box build.
Epson Inkjet SX200 printer used on 250 gsm cardstock. Base textures from DOW II: Retribution with extra tweaks by me. Geometry was done by me 100%
The idea behind this is that it is completely modular allowing me to create any kind of Bastion configuration from standard bastion to fortress with walls.
Also as I'm doing this in Photoshop I can make any colour of Bastion that I need from IG Green to Space Wolves Grey.
Next Beta Build will test a multiple Bastion configuration.

Great idea! Must say I've never been a fan of this kind of terrain but seeing your bastion thing changed my view. Done like this, it's definitely worth it. Looks fantastic.

This terrain looks great, and I assume it is much cheaper than Plastic stuff.
But, how sturdy are they?
Beign made of paper, I would worry that they might collapse under the weight of modles

Judging from the first picture, it looks like it can definitely handle a squad or two. Maybe keep the old chaos dred on the table proper but a squad of metal guys should be okay.
Could be worse with upper floors though...

That must have taken ages to do, but that must have been well worth it because it looks awesome!

I've placed all the metal figures I have (including the Demon Prince) on top of this and there is no problems with it supporting the weight. Using the same internal support idea I do not see any problem with the double height walls either. Tomorrow I will print and create a double height bastion.

I was planning a fortress wall out of Bastions similar to what GW did at last year's Games Day until I calculated the cost !!!!! Fortress dreams on a sandbag budget

What software did you use to make it? I fully support a distribution of this, ideally in the original file format so I can make ridiculous fortresses too :3

Thank you all for the kind replies! I've been ill the last week and slightly busy before that so I have not done much on this. I plan on building a larger version to see how it holds up in reality rather than digitally.
I used Google Sketchup 6 to design the 3D model and Photoshop to work with the graphics, then Ultimate Papercraft 3D to unfold the model. I'm having some texture issues right now. As I said I've been using the textures from Dawn of War II: Retribution but I need to figure out how to recreate the base texture for this...
As you can see the big one foot white area needs to be the same but I have yet to figure out how. I may have to just re-texture every thing from scratch. Any ways the next fortress will be a no frills Fortress of Redemption.
I hope to have real pictures soon.
Oh and yes when it is finished I will post the files for everyone to use (along with instructions).

BTW, have you considered gluing the paper printouts onto sheets of thin(ish) plasticard for extra rigidity/support?

Are you considering putting any of these plans out for download. I have a major project that needs 96 bastions and this seems extremely more cost effective.

Games Workshop: Ruining Chaos Space Marines since 2007
First they raised prices on the Eldar, and I did not speak out because I did not play Eldar.
Then, they raised prices on the Orks, and I did not speak out because I did not play Orks.
Then, they raised prices on the Nids, and I did not speak out because I did not play Nids.
Then, they raised prices on the Marines, and there was nobody to speak out for me. |

As stated before I will offer everything in pdf's when it is finished.
I'm printing onto 226 gsm cardstock. With the internal supports that I have added I don't need to attach it to plasticard (which is more expensive)
*Update*
I've been able to texture the tower! Now I need to figure out some added buildings to go with it.

Congrats, looking forward to seeing it.
If you're looking for ideas on added buildings, my immediate thoughts are a landing pad and maybe an underground bunker entrance.

They handle a metal Demon prince without so much as a buckle.

I don't sell my work even when the textures are home grown. The reason I took the textures from DOW II is I don't have the time to build them from scratch. Which can take a long time.
I will post them up after I have tested them all and I will even go through the trouble of adding instructions.
