When I first saw Avatar, my initial thought was "Man, this movie is Dances With Wolves, but with blue Indians." But my second thought was, "Those floating mountains would be awesome Warhammer terrain", so I cobbled it together and it turned out pretty nicely. I want to do about 3-4 more smaller ones to have a whole game board so we can run a scenario around them. I think they'll work well for Fantasy or 40k, and once I get them all together we're going to run a Titan battle around them. A few Eldar Phantoms against some Warhounds and Knights should be fun. The rules for them that we came up with are that you can climb them by the vines using your initiative as your vertical movement, especially in Fantasy, so your Elves and Skaven will scamper right up there while your Dwarfs and Orcs will take a while. We also have a few things we could put up there for objectives, such as dragon nests, magic items, etc... For 40k it changes a bit, but I just like the possibilities. Anyway, enjoy!

The mountain itself is just chopped up blocks of styrofoam glued together, then hit with a heat gun to melt them into rocky shapes. I went over them with a dark grey acrylic paint, then started spraying with camo green, lighter grey, and darker grey coats from the airbrush. The waterfall is the primary support and it was the toughest piece to do. It's polyester casting resin poured into an aluminum foil mold. Once it dries, you have to turn it over and cast the other side too, otherwise you'll get one side that's textured and one side that's not. The foamy spray from the waterfall is micro fiber stuffing that you find in stuffed animals, sprayed with some spray on glue and then sprinkled with Woodland Scenics snow. For extra support some brass wire makes the fines that come down to the base, and that attach the little islands.

From above: Huh. That's pretty cool.
From below: Ho. Ly. !
I imagine these would be even cooler in person, as you could walk around them. It's the separation of the sections and the fantastic rocky underside that really make this piece, for me. The fourth pic is a thing of beauty.

This could have been done to look pretty average.
But you have done it superbly. It really does look amazing, and the best thing about it is how realistic it all looks.
What you plan to do with it sounds quite cool as well.

Absolutely brilliant dude! Do you mind going into detail on how you cast the other side? I can get my head around spreading the foam out on the table and pouring the resin into it---but how did you flip it over and adhere the resin on top? Or did you just pour another mold and stick the smooth side down into it while it dried?
Again, stellar work.
