[/Update]

Hey everyone. So on Thursday of this week I had an idea to make an all terminator army. My brother and I were going back an forth about what codex to use. We ended up agreeing that my playstyle would match the Greyknights.

But I also had been knee deep in Chaos count-as. The week before I was helping my brother scratch build a dreadclaw for his Iron-Warriors count-as Space wolfs. He also made some of the most badass looking terminators I have ever seen. Forgeworld Zufor as his Logan and the Terminator Lord plastic kit for his Mr Rockfist.

After being surrounded by this for weeks I was corrupted, I had to make an all terminator Chaos army.

The list we decided that would be fun/competitive was a Mordrak all terminator list. Everything is in terminator armor, even the dreadknights. This army not only works with my play style but it also has lots of modeling potential.

We begun brainstorming how to make chaos guys still be WYSIWYG for play purposes. Since most my army will have high initiative power weapons I felt the Slaanesh theme fit the bill.

Their most common wargear:
Nemesis Force Halberds will be mutations like large demonett claws
Nemesis Force Swords will be their power axes/swords (or possibly Bloodletter hellblades, too khorne?)
Nemesis Demon Hammers will be combination of powerfists and chainfists (perhaps chainfists represent master-crafted hammers)
Nemesis Warding Staves will be chaos icons shorten into a staff (not taking any currently in my build but I am ready when I need them)
Stormbolters will be terminator combibolters (they look exactly the same barring the combi-melta/flamer ones)
Psycannons will be reaper auto cannons (Slaaneshy guys love the feeling of shooting these, thus Heavy 4, and since they shoot so many bullets it rends, see:assault cannon)

My brother and I agreed that this was acceptable in WYSIWYG terms and would actually be cool. The next step was figuring out how to make Ghost Knights to support my Mordrak.

I wanted to have terminators popping out of warp-portals as a way to represent their Scout special rule and have them spontaneously appearing (most)every time Mordrak gets hurt. I had always wanted to give this type of thing a try. My brother was not convinced it would look good, and suggested I make a test model, but to use one of my many spare ork boyz instead of a Chaos terminator. I agreed.

This was my test-sketches (I am an artist)

This is my test-portal model. The model I used was an old fantasy boy that was two pieces (everything and the head) so I actually did cut him, though it looks like I just stuck any ol' torso bit on the portal. That was my bad, but it was more of a test of my sculpting and painting skills to represent a tear in the material plane.

It was my first time ever painting object-source-lighting on a model before, my brother says I went a little overboard. He might be right.

Needless to say he was not blown away by this idea. He said it was cool for a one of, not for 5-8 ghost knights as the headliner of an army. Taking his advice we took a trip into a brainstorm together. He suggested that as a way to count as Stealth they could sort of do the opposite, like being so bright that they make shooting at them harder, we agreed that was not the best in practice or concept (there is no such thing as a bad idea in a brainstorm). My followup idea was to have them be surounded by an aura of tiny warp rift tears, acting like a force field absorbing shots occasionally (ok, this one might be the exception to the rule). My brother dialed back the the silly and suggested that instead they would just be causing a warp-disturbance. I immediately though about Lightning, rocks breaking and floating and lava (think Grim-Dark DBZ powerup). Away I went to make a test base.

Remember when I said that I loved my brother's Iron Warrior - Space Wolfs? Yeah, this terminator is his Count-As Arjak Rockfist!

Whenever I think of an Armageddon situation there is always storms showing up everywhere. That was the feel I wanted to portray, imagine the model painted with high contrast looking like the bolt is a camera flash, making hard shadows. You all might not feel as happy with it. I had a suggestion to have lightning more on the terminators, like coming off them instead of striking around them. Thoughts?

It was suggested that the lightning might want to be Red/Purple. I am planning on doing Emperor's Children so that is Black/Pink/Gold (Not married to this legion, was the first Slaanesh legion that came to mind when making the Army-Title-Pun). Which color lighting do you think would complement or contrast the best? Also wanted to give Snow bases a try, using a technique like this:
A. Giraldez wrote:

It's just so SLUSHY!!

Later someone on the SomehtingAwful Forums suggested that I shove an LED in there.

Ask and ye shall receive. Comments were to move away from lava and have green lights under the rocks, thoughts?

At the same time I was looking at my models left over from my Chaos Demon army and I figured I could make my two Dreadknights. I had the spare top-half of a demon prince and a trygon tail and a soulgrinder. I was looking for a way to make a soulgrinder into a bi-pedal walker but I did not find anything I liked and decided to take the tail theme and run with it.

Here are some quick shots I took, obviously still WIP

I don't know what to do with the soulgrinder's powerklaw arm. I recently took it off and was planning to attack a big ol' tentacle (that's slaaneshy right?) but I figured he would look too tendril-full especially since I plan on giving him a nice tongue. What do you think?

Also, going to give the grinder a rattle tail, kinda a diamondback paintjob too, that is the plan as of now anyway.

*overload eh? the updates won't be so large, just making this thread to catch up to where I am now. Answer and coment on any stage or question I asked. This is still in the fetus stage gents.*

I'm glad I'm not the only one to make a counts-as Chaos Grey Knights Army. I love what you did for the Dreadknights, I may just have to steal that idea. Good work so far and cant wait to see what you have next.

Maybe try and sculpt the same arm as the claw arm? The hand might be a little rough but you could use a plastic Daemon Prince arm?

Thanks for the views!

Been working on the grinder knight a bit.

Was not sure about the demon prince exhaust vents I threw on him. Only tacked on, let me know how you like them. Possibly extend them and turn them into wings

How do you like the new arm? I showed you a little how I plan on fleshing this out in the end. Any thoughts before I move forward?? Too Tzneetechy?

Thanks for looking!

More work:

Took an Assaults on BORING Reach termy and tried to spruce him up...

The spike rack came from the Lord sprue so it looks bigger (plus no grooves made to sit in). I cut up his waist and leg to give him personality. Just a mock up, others would be similar but different. (will be a challenge to cut out some faces)

Thoughts?

And I gave the Prince Knight a little armor to cover up how 'nidy he looks (also cut off those 'nid smoke stacks forever ago, just cant see ). Should I try and make a chain mail for those plates to attach? Not sure how to pull that off w/o looking like a big demon bib.

Any comments? Does it look like garbage? I got crazyman goggles on so help me tune into the real world if needed.

Thanks for looking!

Update!!

so I wanted to take better pictures of my AOBR terminator that I modified, so I did!

Still needs a pair of spiky racks and a bit of clean up on areas and mold lines.

beyond that what do 'yall think?

Man, my slaanesh symbol blows, gotta re-do. My bad for using almost cured GS I suppose.

Also, I saw a painting guide for doing emperor's children, but steps 2-6 seem like a lot of waist just to get purple on black.

Just noticed there was a P&M blog section of the forums, should I have posted this in there ? Are there ways for me to move it without having to ask a mod?

Now on the topic of my work,

A person voiced his opinion about the spike racks on the terminator backs. To be short he referred to them as 'spice racks,' that just about sums up his view on them. I was wondering how you all felt about the spikes. Too cheesy? Would a plan to have chaos-spawn bits/Demonett claws be more fitting for a slaanesh army?

Also, is the new pose idea for my next AOBR convert too silly? (again, I play orks so my crazy/silly gauge broke long ago)

FALCON PUNCH

(was originally going to change the arm for a claw/halberd but I need one pfist per 5 and this is the best pfist pose I could come up with.)

Still got to point out his left toe and I wanted to try and put a screaming head in instead of the AOBR helm. Though it looks like it bleeds into the torso segments, might be more work than I originally thought, anyone ever cut those faces out before?

Or, if you think the idea is gawd awful then speak up.

Thanks for viewing!

The more I look at those pics the goofier they become. Maybe I can say the yellow tack got all gummy under the lamps...

I did a few quick tweaks and used the smallest amount of super glue to hold it in place.

I think moving the toe helps the 'slipping on ice' effect (edit: pointing it further behind him helps even more), though it is still kinda there. Also, I think the powerfist is just too short compared to the rest of him to really look like a good punch.

Since these pics I have moved his stormbolter arm away from his side and it makes the motion more fluid.

There is even more tweaking as we speak. Maybe I will 'keep at it' and not update every minute change. After a good night's morning's sleep I can hit it again.

A lot of this stuff is looking good. I like the ork coming through the portal though I think the portal should be standing uright on the ground. It would look good for a single unit, not for a whole army.

Anyway...

The faces can be removed rather easily, actually. All you need is to take a medium size drill bit and take it to the inside of the torso, so it comes out the front. Then clean it up with a dremel/knife and slap in a different head. If you want, you can use some GS to give it something to sit on but I think it looks fine without it. Still doing a great job, by the way.

For painting, I'd say prime black, then start with Hormagaunt Purple foundation, then layer on Warlock Purple and finish with a 1:1 mix of Blood Red and Skull White. Annoying and time consuming as it may be, it really makes a difference when you layer rather then just slapping on the final color. Also ends up using less paint.

Update. Been working on the punching guy, think I got him looking a lot less wacky but still has the same 'punch'

Also, got my eBay termies in (still waiting on my other half I got from trades). Oh the humanity! Crazy paint on them. At least they are metal and I can dunk them in the hard stuff to kill the paint, so THICK!

They are a lot smaller than my AoBR guys I have been working with. Biggest difference is from bottom of crotch to top of helmet. Nothing slightly taller cork plateau can't fix!

Sorry the pics are not wblanced, Iphone does not have that feature (that I know of) and I was just snapping quick pics.

busting out the GS to work on the dreadknights and do some details next.

PS: What do you think of my idea to make more reaper auto cannons? Trying to get use out of my heavy flamers.

My secret fortress at the base of the volcano!

I love how creative you are getting with your models! Your green-stuff-fu is mightier than my own...

I do have a few tips on painting Emperor's Children (and Slaanesh in general) since I'm working on a warband of them to ally with my Slaanesh Traitor Guard army. First of all, I prime white instead of black. I know, I know, HERESY and all that... then I paint pink on top of the white. Not a mix of blood red and skull white: PINK! I use Vallejo Squid Pink. It coats very well on white (and I've heard it can coat on black, being thicker than GW pink) and is a brighter, more vibrant pink than GW's old Tentacle Pink. It's like sticking a lightbulb in Pepto Bismol, it's so very pink. I line the edges of the pink area with straight-up Magenta Ink (this is the hard part... getting ahold of some of that particular paint) and hit the rest of the pink with a watered-down coat of the same. Next comes straight Squid Pink for first highlight, then mix white with Squid Pink for further highlights.

Anywho, that's how I do pink in a Slaaneshi army.

Phew. Been a busy few days. Real life intervenes but that is not why you come to this thread, so onto my progress!

Here is a shot of my tray, showing all my models in their WIP glory!

(crazy that an 1850pt army can fit on a tray barely bigger than a sheet of printer paper)

As you can see the soul grinder has got some more greenstuff work. While I was making the rattle on the end of the tail I decided to change it into a Tesla coil. I figured it goes with the Cyber-Demon thing he has goin for him. Still need to fine tune the coils and finish his arm.

I can take more specific pictures after I do some more work on everything.

Thanks for looking!

The snow is super simple:
-Snow Flock (I used 'Woodland Scenic' brand, more specifically 'Soft Flake Snow SN140')
-Brush-on gloss varnish

Just mix the two together for a second and it looks like crushed ice (It will have a blue tint at first but that is from the gloss varnish, it fades when it dries).

And yeah, I get what you mean about the Slaanesh thing. I never liked them before, but I also was bombarded by everyone's dick and tit conversions, there are more subtle ways to go about it. The real reason I chose Slaanesh was because I knew I needed most of my guys to be Initiative 6 and this was the proper god for the 'count-as' to be as smooth as possible.

Hopefully I will continue to work on them to keep this page alive and entertain the viewers and not be another "It started out good" threads.

That gives a great cell-shaded effect that these close-ups probably don't do proper justice to

Painted another guy. This time I did not get the camera as zoomed in, so it looks a bit more true to life.

I used the foundation granite color to make the black less black, that way it has a bit of shade, still could use a bit of highlighting.

Also went with a bit more purple base coat. Might benefit from a mid tone highlight like you guys have suggested. While I like high contrast stuff I agree that everything does not need to be as shockingly highlighted, even though it's a Slaanesh model.

Also, darkened the base. Not as much yellow in the dry brush and not as much brown in the base coat. Looks better in my opinion. Not sure if I liked the bits of dead/green grass I used on the others, was thinking of ways to change it up...

This guy was just for fun. The painting contest wanted us to try and put a bit of sports or spirit into a model and I made a USF demon. Might use him as an Objective eventually or something.

The cell shaded effect certainly works from a little distance, I bet it looks amazing on the table. Close up photos have the unfortunate side effect of revealing even the tiniest flaws on a miniature.
But, your work is excellent, really well done, love the colours and the basing contrasts it nicely

Say what you will about a count-as army but this was my plan from the get go. I never played any chaos or loyal space marine army before I made this army. I bought (used) terminators from friends and ebay to build one list. I used my spare soulgrinder and demon-prince parts to build the dreadknights.

All the wargear is clearly identified and the special rules and units make sense. I understand why people question the majority of 'count-as' since they don't put in the time or effort to make sure things fit, but I feel like I have done something better. Up to you I suppose.

After all that I still appreciate the comments. Hopefully more updates to come...

Another terminator!
Terminators forever!
Maybe by the end of the year I will be done with this army...

Pink:
GW-Warlock Purple
GW-Leviathan Purple wash
~50/50 GW-Scab Red/White Ink
~50/50 P3-Carnal Pink/GW-Warlock Purple

Black:
Black primer
GW-Charadon Granite
GW-Badab Black Wash
P3-Coal Black
(looks really clean and rich in person even though it does not look 'highlighted')

Base
Black Primer
(gakky craft paint to fill in missed nooks and crannies)
GW-Codex Grey Drybursh
GW-Fortress Grey Drybrush

Still got to do the snow...

Think this looks better? Personally I like the brighter pink.

On the last guy I did not highlight as heavily and it looked more Tron-y. In the face especially. So I think it's a step forward...
