The clock was ticking and was in its final count down. The Space Wolves Battle Barge was due to arrive in two days. Inquisitor Coteaz had until then to regain control over Atlas. By now the Formosa Defense Force had finally secured majority of space surrounding the planet. Only a few remnants of the former Space Wolves fleet hung in orbit, stalling for reinforcements.

On the surface, the Order of Faith swept across Atlas, liberating town after town. Atlas natives filled the streets, cheering at their arrival. To them it was as if the Emperor had sent heavenly angels to purge the pagan Space Wolves. Missionaries traveled far, spreading the gospels of faith and telling the Space Wolves tyranny will be over soon. Over night, Atlas population was in an uproar. Fueled by the Litanies of Hate, mobs of zealots took the streets and attacked garrisoned Space Wolves.

Space Wolves ground forces met heavy resistance and consolidated into Juno, the planet’s capital. From there they fortified the city’s gates and executed any Juno’s inhabitants that resisted. A few survivors escaped, spreading word of the atrocities behind the city’s walls. Millions of angry zealots descended on Juno, laying siege outside. Because Atlas was a mining world, they had an abundance of demolition charges and drilling machinery. In no time at all, Atlas miners tunneled underneath Juno’s defenses.

Zealots swarmed the capital streets. Grey Hunters and Long Fangs unleash a deadly torrent of bolter fire, but for every one zealot killed, hundred more took its place. Some Zealots strapped timed charges onto their bodies and charge headlong into the flashing bolter muzzles. Soon multiple pockets of explosions filled the streets, indiscriminately killing both Space Marines and Zealots alike. Once again, the Space Wolves were forced back, barricading themselves inside the Governor’s palace.

With enemy weight in numbers bearing down on them, the Space Wolves eventually escape the city under the cover of darkness. From there, they drove towards Devil’s peak, a string of mountains located outside of Juno, which offered bottlenecks and high ground.

Unbeknownst to the Space Wolves commanders, Canoness Dianus had anticipated this move and already setup an ambush at the base of Devils Peak.

Spoiler:
Victory for the Sisters of Battle!

Afterthoughts

Spoiler:
Wow! Normally Sisters of Battle don’t win Annihilation mission. In all my previous tournaments, I always lost to mission with kill points, so I was quite surprised to win this one.

My opponent made a few judgmental errors during his first turn. He moved all his forces into the top right table quarter. Usually armies with a lot of range anti-mech shooting win games with kill points. Unfortunately for him, the one long ranged anti-mech unit in his army was a single squad of Long Fangs, which he placed in the top right corner.

I capitalize on his mistakes, deploying all my stuff in the opposite table quarter. My three Exorcists destroyed one Rhino and stunned another early on. His Grey Hunters had to slog across the field in different waves. It became a meat grinder where my Sisters mowed down his first wave consisting of Grey Hunters and Sky Claws. Had the game continued, I would have easily chewed out his second wave consisting of 2 Grey Hunter squads.

We never got to turn 5. I’m not sure if the 2 hour time limit expired or whether the TO once again ended the game pre-maturely. My opponent and I bickered a lot. A lot of the time was spent arguing and referencing rulebooks. I got into a heated argument where my Exorcist on top of a hill was shooting over my vehicles and could see over 50% of his last Rhino. However, he claimed he deserves a cover save because I'm shooting over my vehicle. Page 22 in the rulebook supports my argument, but the entire store including the judge supported his. I guess its some house rule I wasn’t aware of. Does that mean a Warhound Titan shooting over friendly Rhino grants cover saves to opposing units it’s shooting at? In any case, it didn’t matter. I won 7 kill points to his 4 kill points.

With 2 wins and 1 tie, I tied for second with the Tyranid player (fellow dakkalaite fuegan17) from round 2. This left the store in a tight bind. The prize for second place was a $33 store gift card and the manager didn’t want to hand out 2 gift cards. Furthermore, there was a raffle for $25 store gift card for players who didn’t place in the top 2. It would be awkward to split the $33 second place gift card and yet have someone who didn’t place in the top 2 win a bigger prize. Seeing as I don’t go to Black Diamond Games that often, I made a deal with fuegan17. He would get the $33 gift card and settle for third place while I receive the title for winning second overall. He happily accepted and we shook hands. Hence, I won second place at the tournament.

.....

Canoness Dianus leaps out of her Immolator’s side hatch. Her faithful bodyguards follow her lead. To the north, she sees plumes of smoke trailing behind a pack of Sky Claws. Their Jump Packs roar across the open battlefields, carrying them great distance. Dianus reaches for her side pouch strapped around her waist. In it, she retrieves a binocular eyepiece with built-in auspex and puts it on her forehead. Through the lens, her sight magnifies five times, revealing a Wolf Priest with a Jump Pack, leading the Sky Claws. Dianus thumbs a button on her eyepiece, transmitting coordinates to heavy support.

“Exorcists,” she commands over her vox, “fire on my target!”

A cacophony of booms echoes in the distance. Seconds later, fourteen rockets slams into the Sky Claws. A ripple of explosions sends dirt, torn ligaments, and pieces of equipment flying everywhere. After several seconds, three battered Sky Claws stumbles out of a smoldering crater. Dianus grins. The Wolf Priest wasn’t among them.

Dianus gazes across the battlefield, searching for other targets. She spots a Vindicator to the west with its Demolisher siege-cannon pointing straight at her. “Oh frak! Everyone get down!” She screams, but too late.

A thunderous boom echoes, followed by a large explosion, knocking Dianus off her feet. Her vision blurs and her head throbs. All round her, the air was filled with smoke. She could smell burning flesh mixed with promethium. Three of her bodyguards lie dead, with body parts and blood strewn on the ground.

Dianus tries to stand, but a wave of pain hits her. She screams in agony and looks down. To her horror, both her legs below the knee were blown off. All that was left were two stumps bleeding out a pool of blood. Two Celestians, who survived the shelling, rush to her side. “Emperor thrones,” gasp Sister Tessa, “she is badly injured.” “We must get her to a Hospitaller ASAP,” cries Sister Carmelia. The last thing Dianus saw was her Celestians hoisting her into the back an Immolator. Another wave of sharp pain washes over her and she blacks out.

.....

Despite losing their Canoness, the Order of Faith pushed on and eventually defeated the Space Wolves at the base of Devils Peak. With the last of the rogue Marines routed off Atlas surface, the Space Wolves lost their foothold in Formosa Sector and withdrew. The long campaign was finally over, ending in victory for Inquisitor Corteaz and his allies.

After the battle, Canoness Dianus was transported to hospital in Juno. There she under went surgery. Hospitallers replaced her torn legs with bionics. For two weeks, Dianus had been in rehabilitation, slowly readjusting to her new artificial limbs. It would take another year before her body to fully adapted to her new legs.

Aboard Lazaro, Inquisitor Coteaz’s personal cruiser, the two commanders met in private on the observation decks looking down on Atlas.

“It’s good to see you up and walking again, Canoness. I hope your treatment haven’t made you switch sides to the Adeptus Mechanicus,” remarks Inquisitor Coteaz with an amused look.

“Not funny,” snaps Dianus. “Perhaps I should saw off your legs, so you’ll know what it feels like to lose a few limbs.”

“That’s unbecoming, Prioress,” replies Coteaz.

Dianus cocks an eyebrow. “The Order of Faith is a Commandery, too small to be commanded by more than one Canoness. There also needs to be more at least one convent dedicated the Order before I attain the title Prioress.”

“Then today is your lucky day,” beams Corteaz. “The Order of Faith have fulfilled their obligation by purging the retched Space Wolves from the Formosa system. As promised the Order of Faith is cleared from Excommunicate Traitoris charges. As for your reward, I hereby declare Atlas officially dedicated to the Order of Faith.”

For a few seconds, Dianus stares at Corteaz, letting his words sink in. “This better not be another one of your jokes,” she laughs. “It takes more than just an Inquisitor to turn an entire planet over to the Ecclesiarchy and the Sisterhood.”

Corteaz chuckles. He pulls a sealed scroll from underneath his robe and hands it to Dianus. “I have many friends in high places,” he said.

Dianus unravels the scroll and gasp. The scroll was an entitlement, dedicating the planet Atlas to the Order of Faith. On it were three signatures and seals from high-ranking officials.

“I’ve contacted a Cardinal of the Holy Synod on Terra who in turn contacted the Abbess Sanctorum of the Adepta Sororitas. Last, the Governor of the Formosa Sector, a good friend of mine, would gladly dedicate one of his planets to the Sisterhood, as a deterrent to future rogue Adeptus Astartes invasions.”

“Holy thrones!” Cried Dianus, “To have a planet dedicated to the Sisterhood is every Order’s aspiration. A new convent will help the Order of Faith grow, and eventually turning it from a Minor Militant Order to a Major Militant Order.”

“Precisely,” replies Inquisitor Coteaz with a grin. “I know we don’t normally see eye to eye Prioress, but I hope this gift will rekindle our friendship,” he said with his right hand stretched out in front of Dianus.

Dianus hesitated. She knew she was playing right into Coteaz’s plans. If she accepted his offer, she would be indebted to him for several years to come. At last, she clasps hands with Coteaz’s and shook.

“You have my deepest gratitude Inquisitor. May our partnership spread the Emperor’s light in the darkest recesses of the galaxy and carry us onto victory.”

Thanks!

There's still one more battle report to come. After that, goodbye codex Witch Hunters and hello codex Sisters of Battle!

I'm glad you've enjoyed reading my stories. I haven't decide whether to continue the adventures of Canoness Dianus. I'm still waiting on the first and second half of the white dwarf Sisters of Battle codex.

Yeah I heard the arguement about the cover save issue. I agree with your arguement. Also the raffle for the "random" winner of the giftcard was the TO's buddy. I have attempted to make contact to see if they still run there tourneys the same way but I don't get a response. I'll have to head elsewhere for my bay area gaming! Where do you usually play at SabrX?

Good battle against the SW. That issue with getting cover from the exorcists or not is a sensitive one, especially if your opponent has never played against witch hunters before. My recommendation is to talk to your opponent beforehand to avoid this type of confrontation in the middle of the game. For example, before when I was using the older daemonhunters, I would always tell my opponent if they weren't familiar with the older DH codex about my force weapons - that they "slay outright" instead of causing Instant Death. I think it is good practice to talk about anything that may be controversial pre-game so that the game would run smoothly. After all, a lot of people don't browse these forums so are not always straight with all the rules.

I played your opponent in my first game. Despite his good rolling against me, I think I could've still had the game if only I could kill his last rhino contesting my objective. After shooting it with multiple psycannons and then assaulting it with a daemonhammer and hammerhanded force weapons, I still wasn't able to kill it so that we tied.

Going into round 3, there were 4 players tied with 1W-0L-1T each. I ended up playing the only player who was 2-0 and who went on win 1st place. It was foot grey knights (his) against my mech purifiers. I should've had him. Alas, once again my dice failed me and he killed all 4 of my dreads (2 venerables) even with cover while I could only manage to kill 2 of his dreads despite my ranged fire superiority. Oh, well.

Congrats on finishing 2nd, and it was generous of you to give your winnings to fuegan, who I believed took 3rd.

I usually play at Games Workshop Oakridge or at Game Kastle with jy2. Both stores are in San Jose. Once in a while we play at Black Diamonds or Alamo. I've actually been in hiatus. Most of the btrp's I posted are not recent.

Around here, most of the competitive gamers meet up at Game Kastle twice a week.

It's sensitive because not many players are aware of the ruling in the rule book, codex, and WH FAQ. Not many players are aware that the Exorcist pipe organs is considered a turret weapon for TLOS purpose. If anyone is interested: link

Lady luck can be fickle at times. Some days you roll well at it seems everything is going just the way you wanted. Other days, nothing goes right. It's as if karma comes and collects your dues for the previous hot dice rolling.

If GW doesn't release them in plastic sets during WD codex release and instead re-release all the old metal blisters in finecast resin, then Sisters will remain unpopular.

Congrats. Yeah, Reecius is very active in the tournaments scene. There's quite a few gaming groups all over california.

Woop.

Epic congrats on 2nd place Sab :-)

Shame about the bickering but sometimes it can't be helped. I would definitely argue in your case though.

It clearly says a vehicle only gets a cover save if 50% obscured which you were clearly not. Bizarre the TO agreed with your opponent too.
